What if this system works and the fatties become thin, will they have to find another gym?

So if you get too thin to be allowed to stay there, BUT then you go a bit nuts on the cupcakes, can you come back for a day or two to work them off because you hit the thing limit again?

This makes no sense. People who've made it to their goal weights need to do something to maintain it. Are they not allowed in, either?

Along this line of reasoning, since the obese patrons find skinny people demoralizing, they'd find the weight loss success of their fellow patrons demoralizing as well. Maybe they should all just sit in a circle and gorge on cupcakes and bitch and whine and moan about how much they want to lose weight.

I get how obese people could find the presence of fit people "demoralizing"... But thin doesn't necessarily mean fit. I am thin, but I am not physically fit. I can't run a mile, I tore some knee muscles a few years ago and still see effects from it, and I definitely can't keep up with genuinely fit girls, even if they weigh more than me. So to me, this ban seems like a half-assed philosophy.

^^ Me too! I'm thin, but I bet there's fat people out there that could leave me in the dust if we went running together

Strange on many levels. I suppose I get the idea of having a gym that caters to the obese but this is weird.

I can just imagine these sweating monsters walking at half pace on a treadmill for 5mins and calling it a workout. Then rewarding themselves by gorging on food for the rest of the day.
All the whilst blaming thyroid problems or being "big boned" for there inhuman size.

I've seen that working out. I was on a treadmill doing my hour routine when this fat woman comes in, walks slow on one for about 10 minutes then gets off to eat a candy bar. I kept hearing her saying "I'm just big boned" and I wanted to say that she was just a fat woman because she refused to get in shape.

But then again sometimes people who are not very overweight or overweight at all sometimes snicker at people who are really big or at least in their minds are silently snickering at them, and that kind of stuff is what these people at the gym are trying to avoid. Maybe it's more likely to happen with younger people, who can be immature and more likely to be cruel and give an eye roll or some kind of attitude to someone who is fat.
Well, there are plenty of gyms around already that people of mixed sizes go to. There are women-only gym for women who want to avoid the men that oogle them. So what's wrong with the idea of an obese-friendly gym? I like the idea of a gym that is obese-people-friendly, because it can provide such people with a less-daunting experience at the gym. Imagine feeling like you have to change in the bathroom stall because you know that there will be some people who will be staring and internally laughing or chiding in their minds about the numerous fat rolls?
Yes, the comment about little people in lululemon clothing is offensive, it's equally as offensive as an average-weight person saying "those fat tubbies runnign around in their XXXXL large t-shirts." Both are equally hateful and anti-peace.
And yes I think it's silly that they would say that thin people are demoralizing. But despite this, I do think it not a bad idea for people to have a gym that caters towards the obese people so that obese people can socialize with and interact with the others and have a more positive gym experience than they would at a gym of mixed-weight people where they might have offensive lockerroom experiences or have an immature 20 years old give her a bitchy look or mumble under her breath for being fat or walking very slow. If this will help them be more likely to help themselves, then that is great. Why not?
I do wonder what would happen when the person starts losing a lot of weight...woudl they then have to deal with their fatter peers hating on them secretly? That might be an awkward transition. I guess then they would join a regular gym and quit the one that caters to the very overweight crowd.
It would be nice if people would all be peaceful to each other and just mind their business and not care if the person next to them is skinnier or fatter and respond in a hateful way, but rather respond in a nice supportive way like "oh that person looks fit, has great endurance, i want to work towards being like them" or " oh that person is obese, that sucks, i hope that they find a way to change their eating habits or health problems so that they can decrease their health risks and feel more comfortable" rather than " oh that skinny bitch over there she's so damn fit I hate her" or "that fat ass lazy ****** haha so fat." Because then maybe people wouldn't feel uncomfortable and feel like they have to go towards special catering gyms. How will you chose to respond? Yes some people are just lazy sloths and don't want to help themselves. But for those who do want to help themselves maybe we shouldnt attack them so much for wanting a more comfortable fat-friendly gym space...though yes sometimes the fatties attack the skinnies by hating on them too. Eh stop the hating you fatties and skinnies! lol

Okay, is it just me or what..... I work out 6 days a week, at least 1 hour, sometimes 2x a day, and I have NEVER seen ANYONE snicker at a fat person at the gym. In fact, I have so much respect for an obese or just overweight person busting their ass, or even just being there walking on the treadmill. I've seen obese guys in there sweating their asses off, and you can kind of tell they are embarrassed, but honestly, it's so impressive to me. It takes a lot of courage to A. admit that you are fat and then take the steps to change it, and B. Have the courage to actually go to the gym surrounded by people half your size, how awkward would that be? I just want to walk up and high five guys (or women) like that.....

Now what annoys me, and the people I snicker at, are the chicks with the full on makeup and cutesy/sexy outfits and jewelry.... and the skinny fat chicks with the designer workout clothes that do nothing but yoga and pilates never breaking a sweat. These chicks perpetuate stereotypes and make it harder for me to go in with basketball shorts, wife beater, bandana, zero makeup and max out on the bench or smith machine, or sprint on the treadmill without some dude staring or making a comment, like shouldn't I be like those other girls? I've had so many guys say stuff to me like damn! you work out hard! I saw you doing super sets over there! No dude, I work out normally, just like you. Stop being sexist.

Seriously? Nobody is internally laughing or rolling their eyes or mumbling or giving dirty looks to the fatties at the gym. It sounds like you are projecting a little bit, I'm not trying to be a bitch, just point that out to you. Obviously you are, or once were, overweight. Part of the whole beginner awkwardness or "daunting experience" at the gym is an important part of the process, it gets you mentally stronger and more self aware of your body. I mean, you are going to be looking around like damn, look at all these fit people, I really do need to get my shit together. I don't think the gym is supposed to be some cushy, comfortable place. People go there to challenge themselves, both physically and mentally. It goes deeper than just working out your muscles, there's a whole psychological aspect to it. People gain a lot of confidence at the gym for this reason. I don't think you can get that same confidence just working out home solitarily. I guess if I wanted to feel smarter I could take less challenging classes or go to an easier school, but doesn't that defeat the purpose?

As far as having to change in the bathroom stalls and offensive locker room experiences, I bent over butt naked in front of an old lady today, and I'm pretty sure my tampon string was hanging out. Does that count? LOL.... it's all about letting go of insecurities and working towards accepting and changing what you can....

    ^^^This!

When I'm working out & not having to waste my life indoors waiting for retarded delivery guys who can't carry my brute machine up a few stairs (okay four flights) (mini rant there thanks!) I'm bendy & fairly strong but generally that would SO be me fumbling around not knowing what I'm doing while everyone else seems to rather purposefully get on with their super intense workouts that leave me looking like the 7 st weakling I am (sometimes!)

I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to see what they looked like after a double 90 minute 100 degree Hot Bikram Yoga Class!

It's an FPA conspiracy people! In all seriousness some of the best and most devout runners at my gym are at least 180+. I see this woman in at least 6x a week around the same time as me. She can put me to shame.

I see what you are saying. But I am trying to offer a different point of view. The largest I have ever been was a size 8, and i've been a size 4 the last several years. The thread mostly had anti-obese-catering gym replies. I was suggesting a different angle to look at it by.
I think that if a gym is made to be a more comfortable place for its clients, that is better. Yes, they will have to be in the "real world" eventually but they are in the "real world" every day with regular encounters outside of the house. If such a gym is getting the investment to create that kind of a gym, then obviously there must be a demand and interest in that. So there are people out there who would like a gym that is more comfortable to work out it. Sort of how some peopel like to work out at "Crunch" gym because it has a "No judgment, no attitude" theme behind it. Likewise, some women who prefer a female-only atmosphere go to the Gold's gym "Ladies " section that is only allowed for ladies. Some women join "Lucille Roberts" because they prefer an all-female workout space. So should these clients "man-up" and go to a female-and-male gym just because a gym shouldn't be a comfortable and cushy place where they feel comfortable? Lots of female-only gyms exist because there is a demand for it and clients are willing to spend money to work out in such an environment. A fat-friendly gym can really help someone who otherwise would be horrified at going to a gym with a variety of body shapes, be more likely to join because they don't feel like they're going to be the odd fat obese person that some people might be saying to themselves "oh boy, what a big one." Some obese peopel are embarassed that they dont have the same stamina or whatever...and they feel more comfortable starting out with a fat friendly place. Is it such a bad thing? I don't think it is. I think it can be a good thing.

And yeah, I guess pretty much nobody snickers at a fat person in the gym, but there probably is some internal commentary going on (ranging from your "that's great I respect that person" to "eeks"). And an obese problem can have such low self esteem that they are thinking about these things, or imagining that people are thinking these things as they work out, whether it is projection or not, and that can make them squirm and avoid going to the gym. Anyways.

I have never seen that either. In fact I have seen obese become slimmer (sometimes very slim)and I applaud them. I do snicker at the people (which could be skinny, fat or in between)who "workout" for 10 minutes then sit and eat junk food, those people get on my nerves.

Who know who gets on my nerves the most? The people who insist on talking to me though I make it known I don't talk. I put my iPod on, I run on the treadmill, I am not there to be friends (though I have made friends with people I workout with).

I have had older fat women be extremely nasty to me at the gym, especially when there's two or more of them together. Like calling me a slut and stuff, even though I was wearing leggings and a cami or a T-shirt. But I have never seen anyone approach a fat person at the gym to be mean to them.

Girl, I know exactly how you feel! You should just be obnoxious and ask somebody to help you change the weights or even for tips. I do this all the time.... I had to flag down the manager at my gym last week to help me adjust a machine that I couldn't figure out.

I used to go to the gym, go off in my little corner away from everybody to do my workout, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible because I felt like I didn't know what the fuck I was doing there as far as working out, like I was probably doing the exercises wrong, stuff like that, and I looked silly. Now, I get my ankle weights, my towels, water, exercise written out and set up shop right in the middle of the free weight section amongst all the dudes. Usually I'm the only girl over there, and I know some guys give me looks, but actually I kind of like being overly obnoxious at the gym now.

I too have had random women call me names at the gym, and I don't look sexy there at all. Then again I've had women call me names at weird places like slut but I figure they are the ones with issues.

I've had so many guys say stuff to me like damn! you work out hard! I saw you doing super sets over there! No dude, I work out normally, just like you. Stop being sexist.
No kidding. Obviously an overweight person is at the gym trying to get in shape, nobody's snickering at them.

spending hours on your hair and makeup to go sloooooowwwly jog on a treadmill? That's snicker worthy, why are you even here?

I'm too busy working out to notice other people working out 97% of the time, but if you come in with Snooki hair all done up, glitter on, blinged out, I am going to laugh at you.
