    Default Favorite Pieces of Art

I did a search and couldn't find anything like it. So I thought I'd start one.

What are some of your favorite pieces of art?

    Circe by Wright Barker

I love mythology. I love paintings like this because it shows elements that make that particular mythological character who she is. Circe was a greek sorceress who had the power to turn men in to animals.

I'm glad people enjoy this thread!

I just found this on Wikipedia, and I love it. The artist showed her to be very pale (but not sickly). She almost looks like she’s carved out of marble. And even though there’s a shadow over her eyes and face, you can still see the terror and the anguish there.

I also love the fact that there’s aspects of one of my favorite myths: Andromeda’s mother, Cassiopeia, bragged that she was more beautiful than the Nereids (who were spirits of the sea). This made Poseidon very angry so he sent a flood and a sea monster, to destroy humans and animals. The oracle of Ammon announced that the flood and the monster won’t go away until her father, Cepheus, exposed her to the sea monster. (The painting shows her chained to a rock and exposed to the monster in the lower left hand corner.)

Perseus, a warrior destroyed the sea monster and rescued her.

    Proserpine by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Persephone was a maiden who was kidnapped by Hades, king of the Underworld. Her mother, Demeter, was so heartbroken her daughter was gone, she stopped tending the plants and wandered the earth looking for her. She finally talked to Zeus, who convinced Hades to bring her back. But, because she had eaten some pomegranate while in Hades, she has to return there for part of the year. Persephone’s return from the Underworld marks the beginning of spring. She must return to the underworld at the end of the harvest and winter begins.

Le Classe de Danse (The Dancing Class) by Edgar Degas

I love how he painted tutus. They look impossible to paint, yet he made them look so delicate and diaphanous. I love the expressions on the girls’ faces as they’re watching the instructor. They look so eager to learn. If you can read their thoughts it’s like they’re thinking, “Someday, I’m going to be a prima ballerina.”

L’etoile (The Star) by Edgar Degas

She looks every inch the prima ballerina. It’s clear she’s the star of the show. No matter how much applause she’s getting, no matter how many flowers get thrown onstage, she’s genuinely appreciating the applause.

The Love Letter by Jean-Honore Fragonard

I love the details of the flowers, her gown and the dog. I love her facial expression! It’s almost like he wrote her something OTHER than “Roses are red … “

    Gassed by John Singer Sargent

I’m sure I’ve heard Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings many times before without realizing it, but the first time I became fully aware of the piece was when my parents and I went to an exhibition on the work of John Singer Sargent at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

At some point, we come across this painting. Part of Barber’s piece was softly playing in the background while the voice on our audio guide explained the painting. It shows World War I soldiers blinded by mustard gas being led in lines back to the hospital tents and the dressing stations; the men lie on the ground all about the tents waiting for treatment.

To this day, Samuel Barber's piece reminds me of this painting.

The yellowish tinge to the entire canvas makes you wonder why it's there. It could be showing the remnants of mustard gas still in the air after the attach (that's what I believe) and the strips of cloth across the soldiers' eyes are to protect any further irritation.

Or it could be the aftermath of the gas assault and the artist put the yellow there just to keep the continuity of mood.

Medusa by SaraEtCetra ( Etsy.com). I love the tormented expression, which seems rather appropriate given her circumstances, and the lonely tone of this portrait.

Acrobats at the Cirque Fernando (Francisca and Angelina Wartenberg) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

One of four permanent circuses in Paris, the Cirque Fernando opened in Montmartre in 1875, attracting an enthusiastic following that included members of the Impressionist circle. Francisca Wartenberg (left), 17, and her sister, Angelina (right), 14, members of an travelling German acrobatic troupe. In this painting, the girls take their bows after a performance, gathering up the tissue-wrapped oranges tossed to them as tributes by members of the audience.

I remember after one of my dance recitals (it was ballet, and I think I was in second or third grade at the time) a family friend gave me a card with this on the front afterwards.
