I guess it depends on the job. Relocating is a big deal, 11 dollars an hour might not be worthwhile enough to abandon your life for. Mexicans would do it and feel like they just won the lotto.
"Well done. Here are the test results: You are a horrible person. I'm serious, that's what it says: 'A horrible person.' We weren't even testing for that."

Traditionally they resorted to Mexicans. It's a big restaurant. I was thinking maybe Americans would do it...

As bad as the economy is restaurant jobs are not exactly scarce, most people just don't want to do them.

Minimum wage here is £4.95 which is $7.70 per hour, I think living costs over here are worse also.

Minimum wage in SF is close to $11. But everyone I know who works a minimum wage job in SF relies on a wealthy spouse, their parents, or student loans for cash. You can't survive here on that money. You wouldn't even be able to pay for a room without at least 3 weeks of rent (with taxes taken out) or more.
I think Americans would take $11 an hour jobs if it was somewhere where the cost of living is low.

Fascinating post.
I'd be happy to jump on the $11-an-hour opportunity provided that:
We are talking about Dollars$ in USD, not Canadian currency. Meaning that I hope I won't lose $0.37 cents for every 11 "dollars" I earn.
Transferring my paycheck to my US savings accounts ain't going to be stymied with various extra taxes and tariffs.
The "contract" as you say, has room for promotion, advancement and growth... as well as an opportunity to get OUT. I don't care to be an indentured servant for 2 years... or any length of time really.
The cost of living is lower in Canadia (lol) than in the USA.
+++++++++++++
That being said, tomorrows Supreme Court ruling on Healthcare could very easily drive me up north where people are civilized and provide healthcare for their peeps. $11 per hour would be just fine with me in that case.

$11 here is low and really can't live on that.

Does this come with medical and dental?

pretty sure the cost of living isn't that different either. Infact, i'd wager it's more expensive here because of taxes with the exception of a few key cities in the US.

Quite a few misconceptions about Canada in here.
The cost of living in Canada is higher...............WAAAAAY higher than in the US.
Across the board, Federal tax is 5% on any purchase. Depending on which province you reside in, you pay an additional tax. In Ontario, that extra tax is 8%.
So, if you buy a new pair of shoes, you pay a total of 13% in tax on top of it.
Depending on your salary, you basically pay nothing with an annual salary below $25,000. The average salary is $59,000 in Ontario. Tax on that is roughly 30%. If you get a bonus, you're taxed around 46% on your bonus.
Here's great comparison. Take a car like a Toyota Camry bought brand new. Buy it from a dealership in NY State and it'll cost you $25,000. Buy it in Ontario, Canada and that car will cost you $35,000. Now ask yourself, if the Canadian Dollar is worth $0.97 USD, why the hell am I paying an additional $10,000 for the same car and the only difference between the two is that they are separated by an imaginary line?????
As to answer the $11 question, people have become spoiled. $11 jobs are usually jobs that most people feel are beneith them. When a welfare check is almost as close to monthly earnings at an $11/hr part time job (which most are), you may as well just sit at home and do nothing.
My solution to this. Dump welfare.
A problem that we were having up here for the longest time is so-call "seasonal workers" collecting Unemployment Insurance when they aren't working within the season of their job. For instance, if you're in certain kinds of fishing industries, you can only fish for 5-6 months per year. Currently, if you're in this industry, you then take the other 6 months on Unemployment. That's right...............you get paid for not working. Well the government has finally realized that the current system is no longer sustainable. So, what they're doing is changing the law so that if you are in seasonalized work, once you're finished you need to find another job doing anything as you'll no longer qualify for unemployment for consecutive years.

that break down of about $22,800 isn't what you get to keep. It's probably closer to about $15,000 a year and that's if you don't have children. So that's about $1250 a month. If rent is $1,000 or more a month then that gives you about $250 to live off of. Groceries for the month is about $300 for one person. So you can eat and not actually get to work. Did we forget car registration annually, gas, electricity, gas (for home), car insurance. Normal wear on car etc. You would be so malnourished trying to survive on that. What about sanitary products? Medical / Dental if included would be another deduction from your pay.
The problem isn't the hourly wage it's the cost of everything else. Prices are going up but the wages to survive aren't.
So welfare makes sense because when someone does the numbers they think it's best to sit on their ass instead. Or maybe they should move into a poverty stricken area for the cheapest rent possible , where rodents outnumber the residents and you have to wonder if your car for work will be there in the morning. Or maybe the guy blasting eminem will finally come off his coke binge and let everyone else get some sleep? But you can't complain to the manager because he just got out of prison and is working deals on the side. Your 24hr music blasting neighbor is his best customer. Really now?
Or maybe you hate leaving your house because the jobless men sit on the front steps and keep hitting on you. If you tell them you're not interested your car will be keyed and the windows may be kicked out. Hmmm so is anyone looking forward to moving in this area for cheap rent? I actually feel sorry for those that are forced into these areas just because the prices to live somewhere decent is actually out of reach and they are hard working individuals that just can't seem to keep their heads above water.
The people around them will seem like an obstacle just on that day to day basis. All it takes is leaving when that guy is pushing to get in your face again. He doesn't like rejection and he could very well get violent. Now you're late for work again after not getting any sleep. You go to work and they tell you " you're fired". Aww you're just not a lucky person. Or is it true your surroundings aren't a place for growth and prosperity?
If you know anyone in an area like this you will see how it's a battle just to get out the front door daily. You wonder how they do it and how have they not just picked up a gun and shot up the entire building or the gate keepers sitting on the steps. It's terrible.
Is minimum wage like $8 / hour or something?

Um you need to relax because I wasn't doing what you imply.
I converted $11CAD to USD. $11CAD ends up being $10.63 USD. Which is $.37 cents less. (Not $0.27 my bad!)
It should have read: "I don't want to lose $0.37 cents for every $11 dollars that I make due to currency conversion."
That being said, for an 8 hour shift, a worker loses a little over $5.00 : 88.00 CAD = 84.9994 USD
Multiply that by 5 days a week, 52 weeks per year, you're down by $1,300.
Not a MASSIVE difference, but still a sizable chunk of change.

Regarding the welfare issue, we need to cut and eliminate a lot of the welfare problem. Here in Illinois those on welfare often live pretty well and everything is paid for, from food, to medical, to utilities (including phone), free education, even a free gift certificate every month where they can spend as they choose. Our nutty left wing politicians want to raise taxes so they get more, including free internet and free cable tv (never knew tv was a need). Many of them live on it for years because of the freebies. Also, we now have a class of illegitmate children being brought into the world because mom and dad refused to wait until they could afford it. Many times they have multiple partners so mom might already have 8 other babies by 8 other men and all the "daddies" usually have more kids too. In Illinois 54% of all births are on Medicaid and most are out of wedlock.
I say require these people to take the $11 hour jobs. There are many jobs paying minimum wage yet they refuse to take them because they make more than the amount. They should be FORCED to work to pay for their welfare. I'm tired of paying for these people.

My spouse makes eleven dollars the hour because that job is one of the few jobs he can get due to his disability (he cannot longer work in any nuclear related field, which is his original area of work/study). Of course, that income is supplemented with the pension he gets from the VA, DoD benefits and with me camming.

FYI welfare recipients are sent to welfare to work programs which require 40 hours a week to receive cash benefits. For a mom with 2 kids the benefits equal about 550 a month. let's not forget you have to show and prove how poor you are and then jump through beaurcratic hoops you do the math. This thread isn't about welfare but please the poor are the least of anyones problem the cozy of living is. And $11 anywhere in the Western world is not enough to live decently.
