    Sad Hair Breakage? Always shedding!

    Hey girls,

I've had some pretty severe hair breakage problems for a couple of years now, and while I'm not sure where it originally stemmed from, I KNOW that I really need to take action and do something about it! I recently grew my hair out completely after putting it through a lot of color treatments and neglect, so I had a fresh start, but then I box-dyed it a permanent black (I know, I know). This is the only thing that has been done to it outside of minimum-heat straightening maybe 3 times in the past 5 months with a heat protectant. However, even now, the breakage is so bad that I dread taking showers because I end up losing so much hair in the shower and after. I don't lose my hair in clumps, it just comes out in "batches" of strands I guess, but I end up losing between 1 and 3 "wads" of hair every 2 days or so when I shower, and while my hair feels soft, it's not shiny and it's a bit frizzy (to the point that it bothers me).

I gently brush out my hair with a wide-toothed comb before showering, then use a shampoo with a bit of tea tree oil in it (tea tree oil is recent, but hasn't done anything to effect my shedding situation), then follow up with a daily conditioner. During the shampooing process, I end up losing quite a bit of hair. Afterwards, I try to gently detangle it with my fingers and then put in a leave-in conditioner in the ends, which is when I also lose hair! The hair I am losing are not short little broken off pieces, but full-length strands of my hair that've maybe thinned a bit (without root present).

I get enough sleep, I take a multivitamin every day, I've been eating the best I've ever eaten in my life the past 6 months, and I keep myself hydrated, as well. I'm not pregnant and have never been, had an issue with hypothyroidism in the past that has apparently gone away, and was on Depo Provera up until January this year. I know that all of these can effect hair, but as far as I know, I'm doing everything right!

I'm considering doing a nice trim then immediately taking some olive oil to it in hopes that it'll penetrate the shafts of the hair and calm everything down a bit but I'd really like some opinions. I'd prefer at-home or natural remedies, but I'll jump on any product recommendations too! I just want shiny, smooth hair that doesn't make me feel like I'll be bald by the time I'm 25 lol. Help!

Edited to add: I did a search before posting, but didn't come up with much besides Tresemme anti-breakage products (not a fan of the brand), multivitamins, and Biotin. Already planning on getting some Biotin supplements. I think I might be going overboard with this!

Depo has wreaked havoc on every girl I know who has taken in...

Also, multivitamins are often not beneficial. They're apparently the worst offenders when it comes to being difficult for the body to fully absorb.

I use It's a 10 keratin products. It's the only shampoo I could really use without causing more breakage right after I bleached my hair a lot. The oil and leave-in conditioner are really good too.

I agree that you should consider going to a doctor and getting checked out though.

Side thought: what kind of developer did you use with the black dye? I've no personal knowledge to back this up, but my stylist always shamed me for coloring my hair black and said it was just as bad as bleach.

You may have alopecia. My hair started falling out big time a couple years ago and I automatically attributed it to bleach... but thats not what caused it. By-product of lupus. But in your case it could be stress or a food allergy.

Its a 10 is my favorite line so I second that.

Thanks a lot for the help! I really appreciate it. I'm looking into Kerastase, It's a 10, and Redken in particular at the moment before I delve more into BOTM's advice and find a cheapie too, but it's definitely coming. So, to reflect: no more multivitamin (and with that, see doctor), depo sucks so don't get back on it (as I know and don't plan on! been dropping the pounds since getting off it!), get some keratin in my hair (specifically with a treatment and/or protein conditioner), and stop stressing the fuck out? lol.

I'll be sure to come back and update after I give these things all a try, thanks again girls.

There's a new Garnier line called, "falling hair" or something: shampoo, conditioner, & leave in spray. Not sure how it works though, as I haven't tried it. I myself am going to buy Nexus Humectress, my friend's a hairdresser, & she recommends it for moisture. There's also something from Sally's, it's a specific 2 step product for breakage. You can look it up on sallybeauty.com, or on here.
ETA: One of the things I do, I just wet my hair from just past my ears, apply conditioner, & rinse it out instead of constantly washing it, since it's very dry.

Are you thinking of Aphogee? I was just going to ask you ladies what you thought of it as a protein treatment. I just finished my bottle of Aphogee and was debating whether to buy another one or a different protein treatment. I liked it well enough but I'm not an expert in haircare though.

One thing that helped me was using a Satin Hair Cap while sleeping. You can usually find them in the "ethnic" hair care section of the drug store.

Yes, the satin hair caps or satin pillow cases make a world of difference.

If you believe your hair is breaking due to heat and chemical treatment you probably need a once a week protein treatment.

I highly recommend going to Sallys and getting GVP Joico K-Pak Reconstructor. It smells like a tropical vacation and this is the only protein my hair needs. Its about $6. They only carry it at Sallys.

    Where do you buy nioxin?

Also along with protein your hair needs a steady diet of moisture. My old stylist back in Florida told me to use deep conditioning treatments as my regular conditioner and was as infrequently as I can stand it. So I started doing this. I would was about twice a week and condition with a treatment from Sallys or Aveda and I noticed improvement.

Also I'm not sure if you said what type of brush you use but boar bristle brushes are the best and cause the least breakage.

@whirlez and Nuclear Martini: I didn't see Nioxin at Sally's, but I could have missed it. Looks like it's available online (of course) at places like Amazon and directly from the site, but as for in-person, the ULTA near me carries it, and I'm assuming select salons would carry it as well. ETA: Just saw something across my random searches that claimed that Nioxin is sold in the salons in Walmart? Not sure about that, but an idea.

To everybody who posted in general: thank you girls SO MUCH!!! I've ceased taking the multivitamin (still working on the dr's appointment), have been trying to relax some more, and decided to make a quick trip to Sally's today to start off as simple as I thought I could. I purchased a boar bristle paddle brush, a satin cap, the GVP version of Joico K-Pak, and the GVP version of Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm.

I've only used the GVP products once as of yet of course, and plan to give the Joico K-Pak dupe a go every 2-3 weeks at most until I hit the point where I feel like once a month is appropriate, but oh my god my hair has NEVER been so soft! My hair is shiny and silky smooth, and although I still of course have some bad breakage and a bit of frizz going on, I've already noticed an improvement.

As for the boar bristle brush.. amazing! I don't know why, but I always steered clear away from boar bristle brushes, but now I'll never go back. The first time I used it, I tested it out on one side of my head prior to washing, and it honestly looked like I had just washed it and it was shiny and smooth. Love it.

Gonna see how the satin cap goes tonight too, but I have very high hopes based on my experiences with the other things. I'll never go anywhere else for beauty advice, thank you all so much. <3 I hope I can repay everybody with my own advice some day!

I too had alopecia off and on over the years because of stress. I found that I could use topical antihistamine cream on my scalp to stop the inflammation and itch under the scalp (in the shaft) that swells so much it starves the hair to death. I also tooka low dose of antihistamine. Stinging Nettle herb is a great one that won't make you drowsy and will take down the inflammation throughout your body. Even if I am constipated from eating lactose of something else I shouldn't eat, it helps <ahem> move things along.

I second what Desu says. I was on depo for three years (age 15-1 and while I got very lucky in that my hair didn't fall out, I lost a LOT of weight very suddenly and it gave me a lot of psychological symptoms. Its a rough compound. Go to the doctor.

Oh, one last thing, you may have hard water issues to boot. If you find your hair getting dull, frizzy, and breaking a lot you may need a chelating shampoo. A chelater gets the calcium and any other mineral deposit off your hair strands so they can take in moisture and conditioner again. In between chelating once a week or once every two weeks a shampoo with NO SULFATE is ideal. It can't react with the minerals in the water or strip your hair of it's natural oils. Hair One form Sally's is good. Wen is also good but expensive.

    (snip)
Chelating shampoos are like super strong clarifying shampoos that are specifically formulated to remove mineral deposits (calcium, Magnesium, salts, copper) from the hair. Regular clarifying shampoos simply remove product buildup, while chelators take it a step further removing minerals and buidlup. Mineral deposits usually wind up on the hair when someone has hard water or uses no-lye relaxers.

These chelating shampoos are also often used as precursors to chemical services such as relaxing or coloring hair because of the deep levels at which they are able to work within the hair shaft. They help these processes take a little better.

Chelating shampoos are also used to prevent "swimmers hair". I use them after swimming to ensure that I remove the harsh pool chemicals from my hair.. (I always follow up with a good moisturizing conditioner, and extra moisturizers when I style my hair) Nexxus makes a chelator gel called "Aloe Rid" which is used in conjunction with their chelating shampoo (also called "Aloe Rid")

Garlic supplements are also good to prevent shedding, but there is an odor...

I didn't know this!^ There's ordorless ones, Kyolic is has many types, w/
extra vitamins for different things. I used to take garlic to help prevent cold sore outbreaks, & for infections. I used to take hair herbal supplements from naturessunshine.com, they contained the herb Rosemary, as a side benefit, it helped my digestion.
Nexxus Emergencee is supposted to be good to stop breakage.

Edit to add: I went on nexxus.com, there's some good advice on there!

Just a thought, do you happen to be vegetarian? I have been more or less vegetarian w some fish here and there. I had blood work done and turns outs I have large red blood cells from lack of b12 which humans gets from animal sources. I started supplementing w b12 and hair loss stopped and new growth is softer and less prone to breakage. If you aren't avoiding animal products this might still be a problem with your body being unable to absorb b12.

You girls are awesome! Strippers know their bodies better than any other group of people out there. These tips are great! I noticed when I take benadryl for sleep or garlic for colds and cold sores my hair doesn't shed, never knew the explanation.

I battled with hair loss for years until I found Philip Kingsley.
First thing I will tell you is have your thyroid, iron, ferritin, testosterone, and vitamin d checked.
If you have an itchy scalp and see flakes, switch to head n' shoulders shampoo. It has a small amount off zinc in it as well which is EXCELLENT for your scalp.
I used to try everything natural under the sun to try and grow my hair back including the tea tree oil, olive oil. I even tried washing my hair with beer, putting an egg in it, lemon juice....you name it, I did it. Philip always tells his clients not to use oil as it clogs up your pores.
Instead, wash your hair every day.
If you visit philipkingsley.com, you will see he has a bunch a products on his website. Try getting the elastisizer and also tonic. Make sure if you do the elastizer you leave it on for at least 45 minutes. Also, when using the tonic, only put conditioner on the ends of your hair because the tonic will work much better. I get regular treatments at his ny location so I have plenty of samples and I'll be happy to send you some if you like.

This isn't advice, just supporting the magic of coconut oil. From the description of Jenna Marbles' "What A Girl's Hair Means" video:

" I totally abused the fuck out of my hair all day today and now it's really angry at me so I put some coconut oil in it because Jesus straight up made that shit with his bare hands and was like, here you go motherfuckers, you'll never have anything better than this shit. You're welcome. And then he climbed up into his spaceship while he gave everyone the finger and zoomed off to heaven. "

I think we can all feel that lol.

If you believe your hair is splitting due to warm and substance therapy you probably need a once per weeks time proteins therapy.
Also use some herbal hair oils for the hair moisturize. Eat more calcium and protein foods in your diet.
