    Angry CPU usuage

When I'm working SM now my cpu usage is much higher than it used to be. It used to be around 40-50% now is like 65-70%. I haven't tried spiltcamming since it's been higher bc I'm afraid it will push my cpu usuage to 100%. I thought it was bc of the new settings for the encoder but when I had the encoder off, my usage was still higher than it used to be. I'm concerned now that I won't be able to split cam anymore I really wanted to splitcam SM and cams.com but they both use the encoder and I don't think that will work. I don't know what's happened with my cpu. Anyone advice?

I don't have any advice, but I've also noticed that my CPU is remarkably higher than what it used to be when I am on SM. I don't have anything else running other than slacker.com to play music in the background so I don't know how else to lower it, but I'd also love some advice.

Do you have a laptop fan? Before I used one my usage would shoot up to over 90%!! After I purchased a fan it hovers around 60-ish. I know it's not that great and I can't have any other programs running but my laptop is older. If you don't have one it could possibly help, idkkk

I was having the same issue while camming and then I remembered my laptop fan I bought several months ago. But the problem there is its a USB fan. So basically my laptop is feeding off of itself to survive. Sorry to be so graphic, but do understand...."Empress" and I are very close. Sometimes I forget she's not an actual person. So Im thinking its better to use a fan thats independant of your system and close all other apps. I have a clock radio with a docking sytem for my ipod. Sometimes I take requests just to keep em in my room. But my feed gets blurry at times. I have to play around with my lighting and in a few days my isp is gonna get upgraded with a waaaay faster upload speed. Im crossing my fingers that this will help my situation.

Unfortunately this is why SM is recommending the i7. I believe that AMD processors that are similar, and many other computers, can also run SM still, but you do need a good processor.

I had a dual core 3.2 ghz processor before. I wasn't having ANY issues until the last week or so. Then my CPU usage shot up to 70%. If I tried to save a document or open a new browser, it shot up to 100%. Regulars were leaving my room left and right, and my ratings tanked.

I went out and bought an i7. Now my CPU usage is 12%. I run at least five tabs on Chrome and two on Firefox at the same time, as well as five Word documents and one Excel spreadsheet. I can look at models' streams and it barely touches my usage. I think the highest I was able to get it was 20% and I had to TRY to get it that high.

I was really reluctant to spend the money, but I do believe that lots of people are going to HAVE to upgrade to continue to stream on SM, let alone splitcam. I had a really successful morning on SM. Regulars stuck around, new guys stuck around, I got all 5 star ratings and some "just because" tips.

I also went out and got a new modem today. I have Comcast and they have a 2.0 modem and a 3.0 modem. I traded mine in for the 3.0 and my upload went up by 1. I took their free 3 month trial of boost, and my upload went up 1 again. (It's free to upgrade, and you don't have to upgrade your service to upgrade your modem). I'm a happy camper there! Hopefully I'll be able to spend the next few weeks making back the money I spent on the new computer and then some.

Okay thats good to know. What Im wondering is if I upgrade from a 10downgrade/7upgrade to a 25/2meg and a dual processor will things get better for me. Currently I have to make money before i can spend money. Ive checked my cam in a different browser and it was okay not as clear as some. Ive asked a few guys and they said i was fine. But I know it could be better. Also should I get a better modem?

I know its a personal choice but this is why I always advise against using laptops for this job. All the parts in a laptop are essentially crushed together in a small space and the heat builds up rather quickly causing the CPU to shoot up. And since you are using the encoder, this high CPU means fewer active connections. To put it simply a higher CPU means fewer customers can enter your room.

My laptop is an i5 macbook pro. When I run the encoder on this, my CPU is in the range of 20-40% and that's with several tabs open (firefox) and even a movie playing. If I try to compress videos at the same time that is where I run in to problems and the CPU shoots to like 75%.

However on my iMac (its a 27 inch i7 3.4 gHz) I can do all that AND compress videos for c4s while running the encoder and my CPU rarely goes above 15%. Usually it hovers between 8-10%.

While some of us may want to have a compact machine that can be close to us (to view the screen), it is important to keep in mind that multitasking is a recipe for success (at least for those of us who do not have legions of fans). I find having a desktop makes multitasking that much easier.

Be careful. My old computer used to shoot up to around 80 or 90 percent when I was on SM... and when I did gold shows sometimes it would get overheated and just turn off...during the gold show....more than once....so yeah consider getting a fan, installing some more memory in your computer if you can or investing in a more powerful computer.

I wonder why some laptops use more CPU than others. I have an HP w/ an I3 and my CPU usage is never above 15% which is the same as some ppl w I7...hmm interesting.
