Default Serious foot/big toe pain... Sesamoiditis or gout or..?

    Hey ladies,

Apologies if this post is all over the place! It's like 5am and I just got home from work.. my brain is totally fried but I want to write this post while I'm thinking about it.

So, I've been having this really intense pain in the base of my big toe and in the inside ball of the foot right where the arch begins. It affects both feet (is worse in the right one) and it started about a year ago, maybe more (I've been dancing for about 2.5 years), and has gradually gotten worse. It's gotten to the point where wearing heels is completely excruciating near the end of my shifts and I seriously cannot keep going! Taping the big toes helps relieve some pressure, but nothing helps the pain in the ball except for going barefoot. It got so bad at one point last fall that I actually thought I broke my foot, then took a break from dancing for a few weeks and it seemed to heal... until I'd been back to dancing for a week or two again .

It used to only bother me in heels, and now it will bother me anytime I'm on my feet for a while, or even if I just getting really dehydrated and/or inflamed during the day.

I've done a little bit of web research and sesmoiditis seems likely, and gout much less likely (it's rare in pre-menopausal women), but I guess I won't know until I see a specialist. I haven't been to a doctor yet, I'll obviously go see one soon since things are getting so much worse, I just want to know if any of you ladies have had this issue or if you have any insight or... anything.

Yeah go to a podiatrist. I stubbed my right foot straight into a wall and my third toe wouldn't bend and it hurt worse than any other stub before. I went and had an x ray and they said it wasn't fractured but I think that guy was a quack. I have super skinny feet and first went to my chiro to x-ray and he couldn't read it because it was too dark. It still doesn't feel completely normal but if it is fractured you will need to stay off it for 4-6 weeks. Do your research and find a good podiatrist (as I've had shit luck with finding good doctors lately).

Also try thinly wrapping your foot with gauze to ease the pain.

ouchhhh! Yeah I'm super nervous about doctors... I've never been to any doctor other than chiropractors that have actually helped me with ANYTHING, its just been wham bam thank you ma'am so sketchy. I don't trust them.

Yikes, I'm super sorry you're in so much pain.

If it makes you feel better at all I doubt you have gout, from what I understand gout is caused by uric acid levels that are made irregular by genetics or lifestyle. With gout you will usually feel a hot pain in your joint.

I know nothing about sesamoiditis but I have heard girls complaining of their nerves being pinched by their shoes which causes excruciating pain, to the point where they can't where heels at all, even in their personal life. Something to look into.

    Good luck!

@kat, there is definitely a hot pain in the area, but I think it's just from the normal inflammation of any kind of injury. It would be so crazy if it was gout, it's my understanding that it's like an older mans disease for the part.

Sesamoiditis is an injury to the sesamoid bones, which are under the ball of your foot and kind of work like your kneecap. They float around and act as a pulley so your big toe can move. Sprains, strains, bruising, fractures, breaks, and all that kind of stuff to the bones and/or tendons in the area can cause big time problems. From what I've researched, most of the time this can be cured without surgery, just lots of rest and serious anti-inflammatory treatment. Probably would take at least 6 weeks to heal
