Default Made a dumb mistake. Worried about identity theft.

I contacted an escort agency that seemed ideal, but they said that they wouldn't be able to hired me because of my distance. I told them I wasn't able to find anything near me, and the woman suggested looking in the phone book. I was originally suspicious of phone book escort agencies, but I figured if a reputable agency recommended that, it must be o.k. I found an agency and gave them a call. The woman said she'd need for me to send a scanned copy of my ID and my SSN. I sent my ID and 2 pics, but ignored the SSN part. I didn't realize that your identity can be stolen with your driver's license. I'm getting really nervous that this was all a scam to steal my identity, especially since she hasn't gotten back to me to confirm a date for our meeting (I've decided to go indy, so I won't be going). How worried should I be about this, and what should I look out for to make sure my identity hasn't been stolen?

I'm not entirely convinced that this was a scam to steal your identity. An escort agency would need to see your ID to make sure you're of age. Perhaps it's also a way of covering themselves and trying to make sure you're not law enforcement. Not sure how effective that would be, but I could see the logic behind it. Good call on not sending over your SSN though - I can't think of any reason why they would need it.

I honestly can't think of what they can do with just a driver's license. Google says that fraudsters will use them to open bank accounts though, so perhaps report your license as stolen and get yourself a new one. That way, in case they do try to open anything, you have a record that proves it wasn't you.

In future, don't just send off scans of your identification to people.

If that link doesn't work for you try going to google.com and searching for "prevent identity theft"

In the future if you need to send your ID to someone "for age verification purposes" it's usually possible to send it with a block over your address. That way they can't see where you live or (if you live in one of the few remaining states where your ID is easy to reproduce) print up a new copy
