Default Why do you smoke pot?

Im not trying to start a fight here..
lets get that out of the way, ok.

I have smoked it maybe 6 times during the past 7 years. and thats it. Smoked out of curiosity and then kind of a peer pressure....
It made me eat like I was starving, distorted my perception of reality, aka made me feel weird, as in weird visions.... I was not able to follow the 1 movie I was watching at the time, I would forget the previous scene... maybe because I wasn't used to it?
    anyway...
Lots of people around me smoke (alot) of pot.
I did not grow up around pot so I fail to understand why they do it.
I understand it makes them feel good... relaxed.. but is there any other reason besides that?
People who drink say the same... "makes me feel good". bla bla..
But most alcoholics , when asked, admit they face lots of drama/depression in their lifes and some admit drinking its a way for them to cope.
Is it the same with pot smokers?
    I promise I wont judge.
Im just curious because as I said, lots of people around me smoke it and I dont know why.
And I cant ask them why, I dont them to feel offended and judged.
( so please dont feel this way.....)
PS: maybe I should not even post this .. lol
    Seriously, only HONEST answers......

Let's look at a few examples:

I have a friend who has ADHD. All throughout high school they had him on Adderall. He got his medical marijuana card & mj is better for him. He acts "normal" now, not as fidgetty as before.

I have another friend who went to Afghanistan as infantry. Dude smokes weed because it helps him cope with PTSD.

I don't know any cancer patients personally but i hear that it also helps them cope with pain.

Distorted perception? Yeah that's the same thing Tylenol does with our perception of pain & it's a widely used drug.

I've been clean of all drugs for a while now. I've also gotten to the point where I hardly drink--woo! But when I smoked, I did it because my head is such a loud fucking place. I notice everything, am constantly thinking about multiple things at once, I can remember basically everything I've ever read and most things anyone has ever said to me. In any given conversation, the other person can say one word and it splits my mind into fifty different pathways and those pathways split and branch too. Combine all of that with anxiety issues and you'd want to take a vacation from yourself for a while too. Pot quieted all of that down and helped me to focus on one thought or path of thoughts at a time. Also, I was able to disconnect from my usual perceptions about things when I was high. I could see my friends as strangers saw them, for example. I found it interesting, but I didn't like what I saw in them. It also made me a better drawer. I could more easily visually deconstruct, or identify the shapes within a shape. If pot became decriminalized, I would probably smoke it again. But I'd do it blissfully alone.

I bolded the part that confused me. You say that alcoholics admit that they have less pleasant reasons for drinking and go on to ask if it is the same with pot smokers. Alcoholics abuse alcohol, some people (contrary to what you seem to say) do drink safely or socially to "feel good bla bla". So are you asking why do people abuse pot? Or why do people smoke it?

You also ask if there is another reason beside "feeling good and relaxed" for people that use drugs safely there often is not and you seem to be looking for depth where it might not exist.

If you are trying to understand why people smoke pot casually I can tell you that in the past it was an inexpensive easy way to relax and giggle with people I enjoyed being around.

Alrighty, as an everyday smoker I can tell you why I personally smoke.

I will make this as concise as I can, but at the age of 17 I was diagnosed by a general physician with depression. I was then given Lexapro, which did not work for me. I had been smoking pot since the age of 14 (I'm 24 now), I smoked on and off from 14-17 and I hardly smoked again until about 19. During this whole period of time I got different diagnoses from different physicians, mainly being anxiety and panic attacks.

I tried 5 different rx's all of which caused me to be very dependent on these drugs, and none of them offered any real relief. I couldn't leave my house sometimes, it was pretty damn bad.

Ok fast forward to now, for the past year I have smoked pot pretty much every day, and I have never felt more...alive? Guess that’s the best word I could use to describe the overwhelming positive effect marijuana has had on my life.

I no longer feel anxious about doing regular everyday tasks and being crippled by horrible panic attacks, I no longer suffer from insomnia, I actually have an appetite, and my muscles aren't constantly tensed up because I'm so anxious.

For anyone that has suffered from anxiety and panic attacks marijuana is the biggest life saver. These prescription drugs caused me to fall asleep in my own food, to not feel, sometime I don't even think I could cry...again unless you've been there you won't really understand what these drugs can do to you.

I personally never really knew there was a difference in strains of marijuana and the "buzz" received from each strain.

I found some perfect strains to smoke if I need to be alert and focused, and others to lull me to sleep.

I smoke pot because it's a natural medicine, it works for me.

I don't consider pot a drug so I see no harm in it

For others I'm sure they smoke it to relax, loosen up, giggle, pain, sleep, eat, or to unleash their inner most creativity.

I know a few cancer patients who smoke, and it assists in stimulating their appetites, and with some of their pain issues

I think drinking and smoking pot are far two different to even compare the two.

Shoot, I really wish I had known the benefits of MJ before starting these stupid rx drugs.

If I may ... it seems like you are just trying to understand the behavior of your friends without offending them by directly asking them. You mention that lots of people around you smoke what you think is a lot of pot and that it just isn't your thing. You seem like you are trying (with good intentions) to rationalize the behavior of your friends. Like if you can figure out a "good" reason why they smoke then it will be OK. I gave you my reasons for smoking, this is a fun thread and you didn't ask me to play therapist but I wouldn't stress yourself out trying to accept your friends lifestyle. Just own the fact that you don't get it and don't be around it when you're not in the mood.

For the people that said it helped with anxiety. I always felt like it made me more anxious. Do you think it's because of the type of weed I smoked or because it just effects some people differently?

^Some people just don't handle it well. One of my friends can't smoke without having some sort of breakdown or another, but she's like that when she drinks or does anything else. If you tried it several times and had a bad experience every time, I'd say it's probably just not for you. However, I've had mostly positive experiences but remember one that was horrible. It was like every minor ache in my body was amplified. I was miserable and nervous. I definitely think it was just that weed at fault. Also, having anxiety, I've noticed that it increases just a little bit right when I first smoke or take something... like right as I'm crossing from feeling sober to feeling the effects of whatever I've taken. I think it may be because my anxiety reacts to feeling like I'm losing that high degree of control I usually have, if that makes sense. If you only take a small hit when you try to smoke and then stop, then you may be reacting like I did. Usually if I just took more, like one big hit or two, I'd feel fine within seconds.

OP, I know a lot of people who still smoke every day, sometime multiple times a day and their reasons vary. Some just slip into the habit and like feeling slightly stoned all the time. Others, like me, like it because it helps keep them on a more even footing. IMO, being high from weed often is different than being high on something else often. Opiates were like a wall. Nothing good or bad could touch or bother me, because it was like standing behind six inches of plexiglass. But weed just heightened the good and dimmed the anxiety.

Not so relevant, but: since quitting, I've noticed that I'm a little dumber in a couple of ways. My working memory suffered. I used to be able to do complex math in my head with no problem. Now it's like "Wait... what the fuck was that number again? Where's my calculator..." Also, and I'm sure this will make me sound like a damn idiot, but after several months of lots of substances, I have this habit of confusing my homophones or near-homophones when I write them down. I have to double-check things like half/have, there/they're/their, pour/pore/poor, etc. Slightly embarrassing.

^Thankyou for bringing up that last paragraph. I'll just summarize by saying: After my stint with alcoholism I have noticed that I am significantly dumber than I was before I started getting wasted almost daily. So, reading the above was nice as I thought I was the only one. Thanks again=)

Sorry to derail everyone with that--lol: Erhem, back to the subject! Personally I feel that amongst the human population there is this unspoken, universal need to escape from reality from time to time. It seems that as long as we've been around there has also been something that we (humans) have used recreationally as a means of mental escape (opium is one example I can come up with atm). Even in tribes that have remained in a more primitive state the use of some form of alcohol/barbituate/sedative (s) are also present...which is so interesting. Maybe it is just part of the human existance? I mean, even people who are completely sober will do things like shop/work out/yoga/eat/etc.. so much that from an outsiders POV it seems like they are using it as a means of mental escape.

    Sorry about the editing=)

Ugh I wish I could smoke it. I've tried over 20 times always with the same results: pounding, racing heart (150BPM +), dizzy spells, severe flushing and hot flashes, head rushes and intense fear I'm dying.

It's fucked up. I want to relax like everyone else! Sadly, my ADD isn't helped by pot at all, it actually exacerbates the racing thoughts.

    Me too! I feel you.

I get more of a russian roulette experience with it.

Sometimes I have a kick ass high and laugh and relax and other times it's so bad I'm on the floor crying and have the phone in my hand ready to call 911. Same symptoms as you. Like this out-of-body/want to rip out of my skin and run away/"OMG I'm going to die. I'm dying." panic. Terrifying.

Sometimes it can take me an hour or more for it to kick off. I can't smoke it anymore. I loved it when it was good. But I would freak out (and freak out everyone around me) while I was on it if I was having an attack. Not worth it anymore.
