    Default A question about footwear. . .

    Hi all,

I've been lurking for a little while, but this is my first post. I'd like to start off by thanking all of you for sharing your views and experiences. They've been a great help for a relative rookie customer like myself.

I wanted to pose a question of aesthetics to the dancers here: why are giant platform heels de rigueur for dancers?

I understand to a certain extent what high heels do for the appearance, and I understand the imperative to dress in an eye-catching fashion, but the total ubiquity of "stripper heels" still surprises and fascinates me. I've even read derogatory remarks about women who dance in flats or barefoot. I find this particularly confusing given the obvious difficulty of actually dancing in these shoes! With the variety of club attire on display (bikinis, gowns, costumes, etc.), why is the footwear the same?

    Thanks again!

    -Men like them
-They make your legs look amazing
    -They make you look taller
-You have to walk a certain way in them, a sexy way....
    -I don't know any more! lol x

Dancers wear heels? LOL. Honestly, I couldn't describe the footwear of a single dancer that I've dealt with in the past several months if I had a gun to my head, including the girls that I visited last night. Putting aside foot fetish guys, I often wonder if dancers care a lot more about their choices in footwear than their customers do.

Quite a few clubs actually require that the girls wear high heels or even platforms of a minimum height.

I'll admit that I have a bit of a fetish when it comes to dancer's shoes. Although I find absolutely no attraction whatsoever to feet themselves, the shoes are quite a turn-on for me. I have mentioned this to a few dancers and they have wisely incorporated those shoes into their lapdances with me, and were justly rewarded. Often a dancer will ask if it's OK to remove her shoes during dances so that she will be more comfortable. I'll always say "of course!", but deep down inside I'm disappointed that she didn't keep them on.

I have never in my life actually tried a pair on, and I never will. It would ruin some of the "mystery" I create around them .

The ridiculously high stripper heels are actually made for strippers so are much more comfortable than regular stilettos and personally I find it easier to dance in heels than bare feet. My current club requires we take them off before lap dances which make me sad. I'm with lopaw, I LOVE stripper heels!

    Aesthetically there many reasons we wear them;
    - longer looking legs
    - More toned looked stomach and butt due to the posture required
    - Increased height has psychological effect of tall supermodels or people of higher importance (ever noticed how you always assume celebrities are taller? It's a status thing ingrained into our subconscious)
    - They're just plain sexy looking in themselves, and also have a sex appeal; guys now immediately associate these heels with strippers, erotic models and porn stars

Plus its also a good way to tell the dancers apart from some of the sluttier dressed female customers

    Thanks, all, for the insight.

To my mind, though, this begs a more general follow-up line of questioning. Clearly there are selective pressures that have led to the widespread use of super-high heels and other stereotypical signifiers of "stripper style," but do dancers think of these stylistic touchstones as limitations?

Is there an explicit desire to keep personal style and professional style discrete? Does the average dancer prefer the way she looks at work over the way she looks outside of the club or vice-versa? Is there angst over having to adopt a particular style because the at-work culture (including or excluding customer preference) demands it?

Apologies for the barrage, and thanks again!

I want to add that stripper shoes are actually really comfortable. Honestly, they are the most comfortable heels I've ever worn. I also find they are easier to dance in than regular heels.

^I agree with Sierra. Plus, they provide great grip when doing pole antics. Also, in some places, not using shoes can be considered obscenity.

Yeah, that's another good point. Didn't even think of that.

I really can't attempt any pole antic if I'm not wearing heels.

^As some of the other ladies have said-apart from the obvious aesthetics (they look HOT) "Stripper Heels" give more support (being a platform heel, weight is more evenly distributed) and are more comfortable to walk/dance in than normal heels or flats-especially for up to 7-10 hrs a night. Some ladies even wear stripper heels clubbing for this exact reason lol! But, at the end of the day-it's part of the uniform. Ballerinas wear ballet flats...and we rock leg lengthening plastic heels!

...Oh yeah....and they also double as weapons !

Stripper shoes from the 90s-now those look like they were hard to dance in!
I found several boxes of stuff belonging to strippers past once, and in one of the boxes were all of these wicked looking shoes. They had 6 inch heels but no platform--imho, they looked pretty painful. Anyhow, asked on of my senior dancers who at the time had been in the business for over 20 years (she was 40) what kindof shoes these were and she says casually "those are the shoes we had to wear back in the day."

Thus, this is where my answer stems from

Simple answer: As someone mentioned, the shoes are designed for dancers - who are on their feet for hours and may do pole tricks- so the fundamental style is the same throughout dance shoe retailers. There are small dancer shoes with like 1inch platform which long legged, tall, model types can rock, but as the heel gets higher, the platform has to follow or they will not be comfortable to wear all night--> bad design for dancers.

However there's the girly element of many of us getting addicted to ever bigger heel heights so maybe most of the girls end up wearing the same sizes!

Also yeah they are not really hard to dance in, the platform reduces the foot arch hugely and gives a sturdy base, poise is better, toes doen't get trodden on/stubbed.

Oh and for the second q, i don't see the shoes as limitations. I frickin love them! Wish I could wear them on regular nights out. But my club has no rules on what we wear, i imagine if one is tall and the club has min heel height that could be annoying.

The platforms have a shock absorbing effect. I'm almost 6' and get a lot of comments about how tall I am in my platforms. I started dancing in heels without a platform and it was murder on the balls of my feel. Plus the added weight on your feet makes your lines longer and more graceful and make sure you're always pointing your toes when doing moves. Doing moves without pointing your toes looks so clumsy.
