Cute, quaint, cozy. Sure you can say that.... others might scream claustrophobic... but hey the word on the street is that zoning laws will soon change. Thus, blazing the way for the MICRO-APARTMENT movement in NYC.

Previously, apartments had to be at least 450 square feet. Soon... they can be as small as 275 sq. feet. Exciting? Right?

It's a bargain, too! Only $1,400 per month.

I'd also like to not that this is not NYC's smallest apartment... not even close.... In fact it looks like a veritable mansion compared to:

The 175 sq. ft. apartment (for two): http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/m...aJE3c17zkw4efP

The 90 sq. ft. apartment: http://realestate.aol.com/blog/2011/...ork-apartment/

And... drum roll please.... the 78 sq. foot apartment: http://realestate.aol.com/blog/2011/...t-got-smaller/

add the multipurpose convertible furniture and you have something. Barracks rooms are under 200 sq ft.

Thing with this though is the couple have the salaries to eat three meals a day at Manhattan restaurants. If you could afford to live outside your home and only sleep there, sure. I know some people can, and do. Just seems wasteful to me, not to be putting that money aside. Not going to be young corporate execs for ever.

That looks almost exactly like my old studio. SF has had living quarters (and prices) like that for awhile. However, if you have pets that don't live in a cage, its really just unfair. My cat got so fat, like OBESE fat, and once I moved him to my mom's house with a yard he got skinny again. If you live by yourself (and the walls are THICK!) then its no problem. But if you have non-cage pets, kids, or roommates, its a disaster.

I have lived in studio's & in dorm rooms around that size maybe abit smaller -but for amuch cheaper price. $1,400 can get you much more space here if your willing to go outside the "popular" neighborhoods (this is why I usually stay in the ethnic neighborhoods -plus the food is good )

Looks good to me! I'm not a big fan of big places, especially if I were to live alone.
I always get the creepy feeling if a place is big.

The pic is almost the size of my place now, narrower and I have rooms and a hallway not a studio. I don't think it's good that new builds are making such small apartments, but people will pay so they can. It's an ok size for just one person living alone- if you don't want to cook lavishly or put up a dance pole or anything :p Though I've never understood studios- another word for it is a bedsit. Depressing, and I wouldn't want to sleep in my kitchen with all the cooking smells. The even smaller places though- disgusting!

With obesity going up and the size of places getting smaller, we will see more homes having the side wall being torn out just to get someone to the hospital. This is madness really.

Did you see that tub?? I can just imagine saying I'm going to take a BA---. There's just no room for the TH in that sentence. Ugg horrible.

No thanks. I'll stick with my 2000 sq. foot house and fenced in yard in Austin TX and pay less than that.

This is still bigger than my last apartment in NYC. it was about 175square feet. One wall was a sink, stove and fridge(no countertop). Second wall had mini window and space to put a dresser and small tv on top. Third wall had my FULL size bed. Fourth wall still had my bed and then the door to the bathroom. You had to close the door to the bathroom to get to the toilet and the shower. It was $1,700 in '05 on Mott Street/Bleeker, great Soho location in NYC close to shopping and tons of celebs walking their dogs. I worked so much just to make rent/living expenses that I was barely home enough for the lack of space to affect me. Now I live in a HUGE amazing place in Vegas for less than what I paid in NYC and am so spoiled now, it's hard for me to downsize ever again.

I could probably live in a place like that if not for all my books and my pole. I'd be more than happy to downsize the rest of my crap or put it in storage, but I need my books and my pole space lol I think I've just also been spoiled by the prices in my area. It's so cheap here, I can't even fathom the prices of big cities, paying thousands for less space. Maybe if I'd grown up there, I'd understand, but I just can't wrap my head around it.

Wow, i don't think all of my stuff would fit in a micro apartment. I'm used to living in a pretty spacious home. But then again that spot might be prefect for a single working man or woman.

Yikes. I may have exaggerated just a little bit.

The micro-apartments are supposed to be "just under $2,000" per month... Not $1,400 as I erroneously mentioned.

Sorry if anyone got their hopes up.

I lived it a 225-250 sq ft (not sure exactly) apartment for 2 years during college and it wasn't that bad for a single guy. Really easy to keep clean and I had enough stuff at the time to make it seem more like home, rather than a bare wall apartment with a few random pieces of furniture. It was a single unit above a retail store, so it was always quiet at night, and I had a private controlled access parking spot. Those were the benefits vs. a similarly priced unit in a complex with more sq ft. You're right though that it can feel like a prison cell at times, but going out regularly (great excuse for exercise!) helps a lot.

Now...two people in a unit that size would be a very interesting test of a relationship.

    The 5th Element anyone?

Smallest I've ever done was 420 sq ft 1-bedroom apt. Small bedroom with bathroom, "front room" split into a kitchen and tiny livingroom. It was actually quite nice.

I can see living in something that small - for next to nothing. I paid $1,500 a month once for a 1100 sq ft 2 bedroom luxury apartment with a 2 car garage here in Vegas - now the mortgage on my 4 bedroom, 3 car garage 2,350 sq ft home is less than that. I couldn't stand NYC to begin with, but paying more for <200 sq ft than I pay for a brand new and rather well appointed 4 BEDROOM HOUSE?!?! C'mon.

Just like anything with the "just under" or "up to" prefix--- I assume the rent will be $1,999.99.
