Default Booking hotels without a credit card?

I know some hotels allow you to book with a debit card, but they put a hold on your card. I've heard that the holds can be the same amount as the room rate and that it can stay on your card for weeks. Do any of you book with a debit card or cash? If so, how much does the hotel usually hold?

In my experience they charged me the room rate as a holding deposit but every hotel is going to be different

I've usually seen the hold rate as being around $100. It's always disappeared within a day or two of me checking out

You can pay cash at The Red Roof Inn and Motel 8 type places.

How about letting us know your business plan in a nutshell so we can gear our responses toward it. I am serious.

Thanks, but I'm wanting to book at 4 star hotels. I stayed at a Marriott that let me book with cash with a deposit, but I forgot what the deposit was. I think it was only $100 like a PP said.

To book most hotels, you do it online which requires a credit card. Unless you want to actually go to a hotel in person every time you want to book an incall, and use cash, but that would get old really quick. Not to mention, you should switch up the hotels you use so that the staff don't catch on - you can't find a nice Marriott that lets you show up and pay cash for one night, and expect to be able to keep going back there consistently with guys coming and going. IMO that'd work maybe three times max, before they told you that you were no longer welcome, it just screams escort. The trick is to blend in, not do something that makes you stand out. Why would someone who can afford a Marriott be showing up before every reservation with a bunch of twenties? And why would she be needing a room, if she's in the area to show up beforehand to book it.... maybe coz she's an escort?

Will a debit card from your bank be fine for booking and paying? I've used it before, but it was for a hotel on a military base, so I don't know if they did things differently than civilian hotels.

Any hotel will let settle your bill in cash but, depending on how you book, you could be paying a very high rate for the room. If you "walk-in" and book the day of your stay you are going to pay the hotel's "rack rate" regardless of whether you use cash or a cc. The rack rate is the rate that you see printed on the little info card on the inside of the door to your room. It is generally much higher than what you would pay if you book in advance or use an on-line source.

You can book a reservation using a credit card and then pay in cash when you check-out but the cc # is still going to be in your "folio" when you check out. Not sure what your reasoning is for wanting to pay cash but if you are looking to remain "invisible" to any sort of investigation that's going to be difficult to do without paying a higher price for your rooms. Also keep in mind that, in a busy season, it's will be difficult to book 4 star hotels as a "walk-in" customer. Even calling ahead will not get you a reserved room unless you give them a cc # to hold the reservation.

Debit cards are not a problem for booking a reservation or paying but keep in mind that it often takes a few days-or more-for charges to post or clear from a debit card vs a credit card. If you put a debit card down for incidentals when you check in that $25 to $100 or more per-day "deposit" gets taken from your account in the form of a "hold"-the money is no longer available to you even though it hasn't actually been taken out of your account. Hotel accounting departments are notoriously slow at reconciling bills and your deposit charges won't be re-credited by your bank until a day or two after the hotel issues a credit...in other words, your money is tied up for at least a few days.

I always use CC's when dealing with hotels. I work and stay in hotels all the time and I've seen far too much stupidity and laziness over the years on the part of hotel accounting and reservation staff to give them a debit card for anything.

I typically book with a debit card. Most larger chains charge when you check in for the amount of your stay plus an amount for incidentals ($20-100 typically, but you can call and ask in advance how much they hold for incidentals). Anything you don't spend toward incidentals will be returned... eventually. GreenDot debit cards are the slowest I've experienced for this, taking up to 10 business days. Other debit cards tend to be much quicker, anywhere from 2 to 5 business days - typically less than a week.

If you prefer not to have holds waiting to release on your card, it tends to work much better if you book the room to your card and ask to leave a cash deposit in lieu of the hold for incidentals. If you charge the room to a debit card, that tends to be a solution most desk clerks are quite sympathetic toward even in finer hotels. They'll give you a receipt; you'll retrieve your cash deposit less any incidentals on check out.

Paying cash in a nicer hotel tends to raise eyebrows and make you stand out from the typical business traveler. If you're doing the stranded traveler thing (especially near an airport) it'll work once or twice, but...
