Default More hospitals are going "naked".

Be careful. Be VERY careful out there. More and more hospitals are going "naked" i.e. they have dropped their malpractice insurance.
Some, repeat SOME are trying to self insure and have set aside funds to pay claims. Most cannot afford to do that.

It's not easy but you can find out which hospitals are doing this. At least in NYC and New York State you can.

One of the sadder parts is that most of these hospitals primarily serve poor patients and thus do NOT get the best doctors. Guess who commits the most malpractice. While a U.S. trained doctor is no guarantee , the fact remains that about 2/3 of all malpractice is comitted by foreign trained doctors. Not necessarily foreign born ; foreign trained.

Now if you are in an accident or other emergency situation you probably won't have much choice where the ambulance takes you. But if it is anything elective, do your research and make sure the hospital is covered. Will it help if your attending physician has his or her own coverage ? Maybe but that only covers him or her for his or her own screw-ups. Residents and interns are employed by the hospital. So are the nurses. And the pharmicists. And most importantly the cleaning crews who too often do a lousy job of killing germs. Hospitals are GREAT places for picking up all sorts of infections. And more and more doctors are going naked too.

I don't want to be a contrarian or anything.....

    But....

Foreign doctors... doctors who were trained in foreign medical schools.... are some of the very best.

For example: Cambridge and Oxford (!!!!!!!)

There are two other schools listed in this article... one in Scotland and one in Sweden: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/best-...the-world.html

As for foreign trained doctors serving poor patients... that is not a bad thing! UK medical schools place a major emphasis on community service. So it's not just only-all-profit-medicine-all-of-the-time.

I completely agree that elective procedures should be researched, inside & out! But trust me, American medical schools aren't the utmost pillars of perfection. I still don't understand how a medical student in this country can graduate with a B-/C+ average. We are talking about peoples' lives!!!!

I want to ask you this: If a doctor or medical entity doesn't have malpractice insurance... doesn't that open them up to civil litigation?

It's a big world out there. British , other European, Canadian and Japanese medical schools are by and large excellent. Most of their graduates are good doctors. I was addressing myself more to " third world " medical schools in places like Haiti and elsewhere. Part of the problem are doctors who can't speak English.

Whether or not there is insurance is not relevant as far as whether or not there will be lawsuits. It affects whether or not injured people will actually be able to be compensated. Without insurance a broke hospital has no way to pay claimants.

I have to agree with Eric. I have had serious problems with Indian doctors and yes many doctors are graduating from third world countries and have lower standards than the US.

^^^ first steps toward the de-facto 'two tier' health care systems that now exist in many other countries. Indeed where 'elective' procedures are concerned, it pays to 'do your homework' not only in regard to the principal physician but also regarding the OR facilities and staff that will be used.
