Default Need helping pickout a computer.

Ok so my computer broke a few months ago. As a replacement I bought this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ls_o02_s00_i00. I don't know much about them but thought I had read Asus was a good brand. Come to find out the processor is not powerful for me to cam smoothly. So now I am using a rent a computer while i get the money for a computer. WHat specs should I look for? Can I get a decent one for aound $400? I thought about this one http://www.amazon.com/HP-dv4-4270us-...ywords=laptops but i reall need to keep it as close to 400 or less then I can. Any sugestions? I don't want to mess up again. Sugestions on what to look for or computers at a good deal you know of would be great, Thank you!

That Asus may not be powerful enough, but a lot of them are, unfortunately when it comes to computers (mostly for the kind of thing we are doing) you get what you pay for.
I highly, highly, highly recommend Asus. I got mine a few months ago and it's the best laptop I have ever had. I have the 17 inch G74S, it has an Intel i7 core, 16GB of RAM... basically it's a beast... I run it non-stop (camming or not, I'm always on it) and it can handle it, never overheats and has a cooling system incase it does get a little hot. It's a heavy duty gaming computer and has been just perfect for camming/running the encoder/running goldshows/EVERYTHING. I will never buy a Mac again because of this machine. It has allowed me to make Streamate my bitch!

That being said though, I didn't pay anywhere near 400 bucks for it (I wish!) - more like 2000 after tax and all that (I'm in Canada though so they may be cheaper down in the States)... but let me tell you, it's worth it!!
Unfortunately that's all I can really recommend since it's all I know, it's not exactly the suggestion you were looking for with your budget/description there but just incase you change your mind about how much you want to spend I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Good luck!

Edit: By the way, they do sell cheaper models of this computer, they just have less RAM/a few less features, but they are still great and super powerful too!

Thank you. I can afford a little more than 400 but its cutting it close. I wish I could get a $2000 computer but there is no way. I'm a single mom with 3 kid so its tight.

Yeah, I totally understand and I'm sure you can find something good for a lot less! I just had to go big with this beast because I'm on SM and run the encoder/do a lot of goldshows so I needed lots of power to avoid having issues, plus I need it for school.

If you aren't on SM an i5 core would be great for any site, but if you are on SM I would look for an i7 because of their requirements... also, the higher the RAM the better. Those are probably the 2 most important specs for camming. And of course, internet/upload speed is super important, a bad upload speed can turn the best computer into a piece of crap whilst camming. I remember there being a few other threads about laptops for camming awhile back, maybe you can find some of those, I think people were recommending a bunch of laptops including some closer to your price range.

Edit: Here's one, but there are more http://www.stripperweb.com/forum/sho...laptop+camming

I don't have any help, but I did want to say that my computer is plain shit. I can't use the encoder at ALL it crashes the system basically. It has ONE 1.60 GHz processor and ONE GB of RAM.

My upload speed it 2.3 mbps.

While I can't use the encoder, streaming through the browser only is seamless.

I do miss my quad core gaming computer, but really this piece of crap NETbook has been doing me just fine. Do you know if your upload speed is possibly the issue? I know I want to wait to buy a new comp until I can get a good one so I feel you on price point.

Its the computer. My old one worked so when the new one had issues I rented a computer with i5 and it works great.

    I love Asus! Here's what I got- http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+1...&skuId=5584494
I could of bought a slightly nicer one, but I decided to get this and save up for an amazing one with all the works.haha I didn't get the refurbished, but I got the display one (which in my opinion is worse) and it fine...of course others results may very.
I use it for xpeeps, mfc, RTi, streamates (I dont use the encoder), and it keeps up pretty darn well. It's not a looker by any means, the plastic feels very cheap. But the interior is all that matters to me anyway. For the specs it was really a good deal. Hope this helps!

I've had computers that were supposed to be the best...and turned out to be the worst...so my suggestion is to get whatever warranty you can on whatever you buy...because you never know when you will need it. I was absolutely DEVASTATED when I started having problems with my Toshiba laptop...it was supposed to be the best one in the damn Office Max and it's a gaming computer, had all of the latest upgrades that made it a beast machine, and it was...for three months. Then, it started to overheat on me. No biggie, sent it in for repairs. Two months later, same thing, overheated over and over again. Sent it back, and it did it yet again. I had it fixed three times, each time, the mother board had apparently gone bad. Anyway, right when that stupid manufacturers warranty ran out, it happened again So I got a Dell. A few months later, guess what happened it didn't overheat...just the stupid charge wouldn't hold any longer, and it apparently wasn't the battery but something wrong with something technical inside. Ugh. If I could give up on computers, I totally would.

generally speaking, where true HD video streaming is concerned, Intel I3 based machines or AMD A series based machines will work but are going to be 'hard pressed'. Intel I5 based machines or AMD FX series based machines are going to do OK. And Intel I7 based machines will have 'power to spare'.

This assumes that the machine has at least 4 gigs or ram available. Having even more memory available can make a noticeable improvement, and particularly so when attempting to run multiple tasks at the same time.

IMHO any machines that are based on older design / less powerful processors can be a 'crap shoot' performance wise ... and I wouldn't recommend investing good money in such a 'technologically obsolete' machine even though it is being marketed as 'new'.

As to 'refurbished' machines, this is a bit of a crap shoot as well. Usually these 'refurbished' machines are warrantee returns that have been repaired and tested by the 'factory'. What it's impossible to tell about such 'refurbished' machines of course is whether the cause of the original failure was specific and completely fixed / replaced with a new sub-assembly, or whether the cause of the original failure was systemic and still potentially present ( increasing risk of a repeat failure ).

I had the same with my Toshiba i7 gaming laptop...in my case I found the fan stopped working sometimes soon after I'd turned it on but eventually it would start up again. I didn't bother trying to get it fixed because I saw stories from others with the same problem and that it's some inherent fault, so I just fiddle with it when it happens.
