Default This week diet/ excercise challenge

Soo. Stuck at 142. Will. not. budge. I've stuck to less than 800 cals a day, with moderate excercise. But, a bizzare and frustrating roadblock holding me up- excersise headaches. I used to get these when I was younger, jogging in the summer. Also, note to self, my crazy sister makes a bad jogging buddy. I jogged a few miles at night, which was weird and cool. My dog is getting old so he gets kind of slow at times. Also an old friend from high school facebooked me about going to the gym for an hour every afternoon- good thing bc it will reduce the excercise headaches and maybe provide some accountability.
My stomach looks slightly flatter, my face seems a bit slimmer. Been drinking black coffee and green tea faithfully.
I dont really have any money for supplements etc. So. maybe I will add a couple extra miles a night of walking/ jogging and mayyybe some sit ups. I dont see the point of body building excercises, they are so fucking boring! but anyway if it helps then I'm all for it.
so thats my story of the week feel free to comment, or if you want to post your weeks results then go for it.

You should never go below 1200 cals a day. You aren't helping yourself, you are staving yourself. You are just setting your body up for disaster because you body is in starvation mode, right now it is freaking out, and anytime you do eat more than your 800 cals it will hold on to everything and turn it into fat. I've had enough nutrition and nursing classes on this. There are diets out there that will work but this will not please find something better, I'm begging you for your health.

http://fattyfightsback.blogspot.ca/2...tion-mode.html - here's a great article about 'starvation mode' with links to other articles at the bottom.

@Op, the best exercise is the kind you can stick to. Consistency is what's going to get you the results. If you run every day, keep running. Also, try to add in more physical things to your day. Walk/bike/run everywhere that you can. Take the stairs. Remember that permanent change doesn't come overnight, it's something you have to keep working at.

Seconding what BOTM suggested- you'll find even with food that should be portioned, the weights are often not what they should be. I find this one with protein powder all the time- a scoop is usually not the weight that it is alleged to be in the nutritional info.

I think you need to change your exercises. Instead of just jogging, try adding some fast-paced sprinting into the mix. Idk about everyone else, but even as a very weak runner, my body easily adjusts to jogging and walking. While I like to walk as a lifestyle choice and to maintain my weight, it has never helped me to lose weight. Also, from what I've heard/read, situps are one of the more useless exercises. I think that pushups, crunches, and lunges are much better exercises that don't require the use of a gym.

The "starvation mode" thing has been rehashed on here so many times, even in the last week or two alone. My two-cents: temporary restriction to break through stubborn pounds is not going to kill you or send your body into hysterics. But if you're going to restrict, make sure what you do eat is good.

I'd very much recommend increasing the calorie intake. 800 kcals for a very short time might work but in the long run it's too hard for the body to handle (=low energy levels, hair falling out, mood swings and so on). I'd keep the workouts aggressive (intervals, heavy lifting etc., not to the point of passing out and puking but up to muscle fatigue and exhaustion) on most days, with a rest/go for a walk day every now and then and adjust the calories to a bit higher level.

Finding the right balance of food intake and exercise can be frustrating but it pays in the end, imo. I'm not a role model or know it all but at the moment I'm for example keeping my weight the same (125 lb'ish) while slowly building muscle (and strength) and burning fat and my daily calories are around 2000. I exercise about 7 hours a week and usually feel energetic all day long. If a pound or two would like to shed off, I wouldn't mind but I'm not reaching for a lower weight than that. To me I look best when I'm sort of a mixture of fitness and muscle while still small and not extremely ripped. (If your goal is something totally different, ignore my ideas because they might not work towards your goal.) I'd say lower than 120 lbs would start to look less good on me.

At one point I believed my metabolism is stuck. My daily calories were around 1400 and I still stayed sort of flabby and chubby, even though I thought I exercised kinda lot. My workouts were mostly yoga and things like that so I first tried adding more exhausting sports into the mix. After that I would increase the calories a bit when I felt I needed more energy and so on, trying to find the balance where I would best develop to the direction I wanted. At one point I was slowly losing weight even with 1800 kcals a day.

I don't know if most people nowadays still want to diet every now and then and then lead a different kinda life in between of diets. To me it feels better to find a lifestyle that works in the long run. Just my two cents here and absolutely no offence to anyone...

What kinds of foods are in that 800cals? Not all foods are created equal... yes there is cals in vs cals out but you wanna make sure you are eating food that is going to sustain energy and give you nutrients. I find the best way to lose a lot of weight is no sugar - eat only meat and veggies... no sauces, nothing plain old baked fish or poultry and steamed vegetables. You can use a bit of oil and sesame seeds to make it more interesting. And drink tons and tons of water.

Thanks for the link on the "starvation mode" lol, contrary to popular belief, going under 1200 calories will not kill your body or send it into a frenzy. 800 net calories is around what I need to lose 1 lb/week," and when I eat that much its always from healthy foods so I get all of my nutrients in. 800 calories of sugar (including diet bars and shit like that), is not good for you and I would imagine your blood sugar levels being all over the place, not to mention sugar makes you retain water.
Yeah, I'm always amused by the "Starvation Mode" thing. This is why people don't ever starve to death and anorexics aren't skinny.

You're exactly right about the quality of calories being super important- I try to focus on that more than the number and it's helped me a lot. 800 calories made up of lean meats, all the veggies you want, fruit, nuts, and healthy fats is going to be way better in the long run than being like "gotta eat 2000 calories a day or I'll starve... hmm that's four big macs, meals for the day solved."

Hey guys, yeap Thanks for the variety of info. Yea, a more intense excersise is probly in order, I used to be a pet groomer, so I lifted large dogs on and off tables and tubs all day long. When that stopped and I started drinking, my body changed. Well for a couple weeks, I was eating cofee and toast in the AM, with boiled eggs. turkey burger with avacado at night and split peas for snack, or banana. I dont know about the whole" no carb thing" I think 3 slices of bread wont be apaclyptic. No bread makes me a dizzy bitch. Although, I have a recipe for lithanian potato bread from my gram which seems healthier then the shit at the store. I like the idea of lots of lean meat, nuts, and energy bars! I also love omlettes. The past coulple days I got depressed and went on a drinking and taco bell binge- gah... WTF. Its true when you live with a guy your eating habits suffer. sometimes I think you guy wants you to be chubby -so they feel hotter; does that make sense? Well no one addressed my exersize headaches. Those put a HUGE damper on my plans. Could it be only that it happens in the heat? I dont know, but it lasted all day, and it ruined my day for sure. My next step is to try an indoor workout at the gym/ or bike ride which is way more fun then sitting on a treadmill. Boredom is a huge thing to. Those stationary machines are not my friend. But, I suppose with the soaps on, it makes you forget how boring it is, doesnt it?

I prefer classes for cardio they burn way more calories and you can't give up cause youre in a group. As for the headaches you are probably dehydrating. You are sweating so you need more water than a sedentary person. You could try drinking coconut water during your workout to keep electrolytes in balance. It's not got too many calories so 1 when you train won't be too bad.

ps I am increasing the cal intake too, in fact have already.. just need to be prepared with good stuff like lean protiens, etc. fish, that is healthy- so my husband doesnt magically appear like the ghost of christmas size 14 with bags of pizza rolls, ice cream, and sloppy joes. Yea I guess some men are kitchen-and diet-challenged. haha. Well thanks for all your tips - for sure helping me find a way back to my regular body and away from the couch.
