    Mind Blowing anti-depressants and alternatives

i used to be prescribed xanax about a year or so ago [had some genuine issues which i exeggarated a bit] and i wouldnt mind getting back on it again considering [to all those who have been following] that my life sucks and im more prone to be emotional and have breakdowns or panic attack like episodes. but its just so difficult to get the legit way! in the inner city and near not so nice areas the sign at the doctors say they dont prescribe anything from the xanax drug family [i googled it before cant remember but it involves prozac and other anti depressants and sleeping pills] due to increased addiction.

is there an alternative to xanax perhaps from a different drug family that still has similar effects and is easier to get? prescribed or otherwise?

i know a few people who can probably hook me up with some anyway but im sick of waiting around coz im not feeling any better and i honestly dont know how/if im gonna pull it together for work. is there anything else over the counter in pharmacies or health stores i can walk in and buy that will sortof chill me out during an episode?
[ive heard of st johns wort but i hear thats no good to be taken whilst on the contraceptive pill]

i really dont wanna develop dependencies or anything but i do legit need some medication help... maybe i should just stop being impatient and wait for someone to hook me up with some overpriced xanax....

i started havning panic attack-y symptoms this week after not having them for a long time and benadryl always works for me in emergencies.

i have also heard amazing things about lithium orotate (over the counter, legal -- http://www.amazon.com/Nutrient-Carri.../dp/B00014DIW2). from what i know about you you sound kind of like me in that you get very excited, movitvated, and optimistic about projects some of the time and then fall into spells of depression or anxiety so maybe you are bipolar? i have BPD which is like a rapid cycling bipolar and don't take meds but try and manage it with diet, lifestyle, meditation with varying success...

    isnt benadryl an allergy medicine?
thanks ill look into it, s far so good have you tried lithium orotate? some amazon listings are funny about it being shipped outside the u.s. but i found heaps on ebay so i might give it a go. it says its for bipolar though what does it do? mood stabliser?

im not bipolar though. i used to have bpd when i was younger. its not so bad now but sometimes i have some episodes that can get bad. they dont happen often. i just get really emotional and often am angry. i just posted about my most recent issue in bitchwhinecomplain and im still not feeling particularly good. so far i had a bit of low alc wine and bad tv to chill me out and its working but i dont want to be drinking away my problems. even though i didnt get drunk tonight this is just not something i want to get used to. plus sometimes it makes me more emotional. its just easier to pop the pill, and when im completely emotionally unresponsive, deal with all the issues in my brain, think it through and tell myself its not that big of a deal. and when im back to normal i hardly think about it [unless it happens again] because ive already 'resolved' it in my head. thats kinda how i do it anyway.

i kinda just wanna feel normal without flipping out under stress completely for not always valid reasons......... somethings gotta smooth out the roller coaster ride while i work out the issues?

benadryl is an allergy med but the psych that i spoke with said it affects the same receptors as trazodone and that a lot of people take it for sleep. my thoughts can get a little loopy on it but i raaaarely take it, only in emergency type situations. i'm not really an expert on meds. :/ the only experience i had was taking wellbutrin for two weeks and it made me cracked out and then gave me a seizure and i was sick for a year.

my friends say zoloft makes them zombielike but has helped for temporary assistance in times of intense trauma, but i am way too afraid of the side affects. my mom took ativan and had a hell of a time getting off it -- and she only took a low dose! it got to the point where she was cutting the pills down into virtually microscopic portions but even though she tapered down, quitting altogether was still hard. another friend killed himself while trying to quit benzos.
    antidepressants are some serious shit.

Are the doctors who practice this blanket refusal to prescribe working as GPs and/or at walk-in clinics? A lot of "regular" doctors won't prescribe anything like Xanax because, as you said, it's highly addictive. Even many psychiatrists are hesitant to prescribe the fast-acting variety at all, let alone for an extended period of time.

Do you have the option to go to a psychiatrist? From my experience, most prefer to prescribe "XR" versions of drugs (extended release) because they don't provide the immediate "reward" that fast-acting drugs do, which is generally what recreational users seek. I took Seroquel XR for a while before I developed serious side effects and quit cold. It was prescribed to me to treat Bipolar disorder and resultant insomnia/agitation. While Xanax would basically make me black out or, at best, sleep really soundly, Seroquel XR would help me to go to sleep, then continue to blunt my agitation when I woke. However, I felt that it basically blunted everything else too, so I wasn't a fan. When it began giving me chronic muscle pain, I decided to quit and felt I was better off managing my anxiety in ways like what glitzy suggested.

Since, as glitzy also pointed out, you seem to suffer from depressive periods, I really don't think that Xanax is a good option for you. I'm being totally hypocritical in saying that, because there was a time period where I took a lot of downers just because I didn't want to deal with feeling anything. But truly, Xanax can get nasty quickly.

An alternative that I had some good results with a while back was Rhodiola Rosea. It can cause some irritation to your intestines though if you're sensitive. It is not a fast-acting choice, but if you take it consistently, then it can help with anxiety and depression. I'm pretty skeptical of most "natural remedies," but I did see modest results with this.

Last thought: one of my acquaintances is very verbal about her anxiety and depression issues. She blasts people for saying that you should tell an anxiety sufferer to "try to control" his/her anxiety because, in her opinion, it invalidates that person's feelings. However, I've had anxiety since I was a small child and I have never been more healthy than when I began taking responsibility for my own emotional/mental well-being. Drinking, drugs (even prescription ones, in some cases), shitty diet, toxic relationships, never sleeping enough, etc--while all of these factors may be a part of your way to deal, they're all just playing back into the same cycle. I genuinely suffer from a myriad of psychological issues, so again, I'm not trying to play down the way these problems can fuck up your life, but judging from your posts, I think that you could greatly benefit from a number of lifestyle changes, perhaps more than you could benefit from being medicated. Perhaps a combo of the two would be best for you, but just don't ever discount how much good you can do yourself just by taking a step back and evaluating your situation.

I've taken Benadryl to make me sleep before too, but my doctor told me that frequent use can damage your... liver? Kidneys? Something important, anyway. He said taking it every now and then wouldn't kill me, obviously, but given that I already have major insomnia issues, getting used to an aid that I can't rely on long-term was a bad choice. I've never had any luck with sleeping pills, from melatonin to the Seroquel XR I talked about above. They would maybe work for a week, then I'd start becoming resistant and feel like shit.

For reference though, as a fairly small female, 25mg of Benadryl in an "emergency" situation will make you a little tired. 50mg will probably knock you out for a good nap.

My husband suffers from anxiety and mild depression. For a long time he didn't have health insurance and he tried a million different over the counter and natural remedies. He had the best luck with 5-HTP and L-Theanine. However, he still had a lot of anxiety about things. He found a regular family medicine-type doctor's office and told them exactly what was going on. They were very receptive to his situation and didn't treat him like he was some sort of a drug fiend. He was prescribed the anti-depressant called Celexa to take every day as well as Klonopin (a benzo.) The first couple of weeks with the Celexa were hard for him to adjust to, but now he takes one of each every day and he feels much much better. I have seen firsthand how crippling anxiety can be and I truly encourage you to just go to a doctor. Even if it ends up costing you a couple hundred dollars, I think that it would be worth it ten times over in order to be able to feel like you can face each day.
In the meantime, try 5-HTP or L-Theanine (which you can get from a health food store probably). But you should really try to get yourself to a doctor! Good luck with everything!

yeah i rarely take xanax only really when im really too depressed and keep crying for hours on end and i cant stop myself from it getting worse in my head. i watched it when i took with or without the prescription. i didnt really notice anything different coz i took such a rare and small dosage each time, only when i stopped that whenever i used to take them to regulate my sleep patterns [i used to work long hours often finishing at 7am or later] that i had more of a trouble falling asleep than before taking but it did not induce insomnia or anything. oh yeah and getting up in the morning after was intensely difficult. but i managed it really wasnt that bad just noticable.

is zoloft like the really strong one? oh wow im really sorry about your friend. what was she taking [in what dosage]?

this is partially the reason why im seeing if theres any herbal alternatives or over the counter stuff thats similar in the effects but without the addiction issues and the side effects etc

Try omega-3 and complex 100 vitiamin B (be sure B12 is high). I have been taking those for a year, when i miss serveral days or a week I feel shittier and more tired/lazy. There are some studies on eating more fish with omega 3 declines depression.

i know the depression thing keeps coming up... i dont know if i really mentioned it... i would describe my moods more like im generally feeling okay and upbeat most of the time, getting shit done, going on with stuff, not really seeing much people aside from work but catching a friend for a one on one lunch here n there, when the mood strikes, getting really into doing fashion design like having 8-12 hr sewing days i just seem to cruise through and be proud of my creations, go to work, enjoy a movie at home, take a day or two off design to relax. be cordial and sometimes chatty with the housemates and generally pleasant. sometimes i do get angry and worked up [like few times a week] and normally just dance off some steam or listen to angry music [no gym membership yet, just moved]

this is normally how i am

then at some point either a massive shit hits the fan at some point in my life, or several like-minded groups of shit coming together and at first it starts to stress me out a bit, i do other things, read, meditate, run etc take my mind off it... depending on the severity or consistency they come back and i think about it more often and then it esculates and blows up into some huge drama [in my head or otherwise.....if youve been following my posts you will see examples]... normally this happens when i overwork myself at the SC and sometimes design wise on top of that which leaves me really vulnerable and this shit just finds its way in AND WONT LEAVE! so when it reaches drama stages [this doesnt happen too often maybe once every two three months or so depending whats going on in my life at the moment] it all just explodes and once i start crying or shouting its really really hard for me to regain my composure [which is why i try to stop myself before it gets to this level] and just keep breaking down, unable to stop crying or being really anxious, racing panic-ey thoughts, feeling helpless and very lonely either in the form of total hysteria and crying and breaking down or just really hard getting out of bed and doing stuff, constantly thinking about all the drama, too clouded to see a solution and get more emotional......

until im somehow over it and back to normal. usually achieved by seeing my mum, hugging my cat, watching ridiculous movies/shows, having a massive drinking/bitch night or having a spa day. or taking a xanax or smoking a joint to calm myself down enough to clear my head and come to a resolution or just the understanding that shit dont matter.

i dont know if im threadjacking here but this is kinda how i feel and the cycles i go through.

im not a huge fan of being completely on medication and i dont expect it to fix all my problems. usually it is the last resort for me when i really did try everything to get into a healthier headspace.

I understand what you are going through. . I used to be dependent on pharmecuticals such as Xanax and Seroquel. The thing I reccomend is STOP PHARMACEUTICALS 100%! Xanax is a VERY dependent drug. I think back on my life when I was prescribed those medications and I honestly forget a LOT of detalils about my life back then. I was like a walking zombie, and it eventually put me in a weird, dark place.

Not to sound like a tree hugging hippie here, but you will be AMAZED at the changes your mind and body go through when you stop eating processed food and take vitamins. (Including very healthy fats like flaxseed oil and fish oil). Another thing? Exercise, and LOTS of yoga and meditation. Seriously. The.best.remedy.ever. (From my personal experience)

ive done all of those things and when im in as deep as i can be, it doesnt help. honestly. medication is always the last thing i reach for and very rarely. i just said above how i take the xanax, [only 1/4 at a time too] and im very responsible. i dont feel like a zombie and i dont wish to. i just need it to stop me thinking for the little while i can gather it together and move forward

I have really bad anxiety too.
I was prescribed clonazapam awhile ago, but I just hate anti anxiety meds, they make me so tired.
Clonazapam is similar to xanax (from what my Dr told me)

My mother in law suggested I try black kohosh, and that did mellow me out, and its all natural.

Sorru for any errors, on my phone.

Came to recommend omega-3... I went through a pretty serious bout of anxiety/depression a couple years ago. Took Celexa, got hammered with side effects, quit.

And then thought I really went nuts because I literally could not stop eating shrimp. I craved it constantly. Felt almost normal again, but was like, something isn't right obviously. Went to the doc and was like, what's wrong with me? He figured it was a combination of the omega-3 and some of the trace stuff in shrimp that was making me feel better.

Just noticed you were vegetarian, so not sure if you do seafood, but you can find omega-3 in walnuts and a few other things. I found that I get a better result from trying to eat foods with the right things in them than supplements, just me personally.

^ but i guess your situation is different coz since youve been taking them from a young age at a constant dosage im assuming for years, your body responses and outcomes will probably be different to someone who has never been medicated and only uses them for crisis like situations? im guessing?

i think the next time i see my doctor im going to ask for a psychological analysis/examination just to make sure im just tired and stressed out and these things in my life are not effecting me in such a massive way because im eg. bipolar or [still/again] borderline. because if so id like to know what triggers to watch out for and if i need any kind of medication like mood stabilisers to kinda smoothen me out a bit.

after the massive fight last night i couldnt get out of bed today it took me like two hours and my whole body was shaking and it still is. i have never had a similar encounter or confrontation with anyone [after a very very rough day full of drama] where my body would respond this way. my legs were feeling week and my knees felt like buckling under me when i was walking to the store. i felt like i was gonna collapse any moment now. i visited an old neighbourhood i lived with my best friend which made me feel better and just sat on the beach for awhile. now im back home and i still feel very unstable and my whole body keeps trembling and i dont know what to do to help myself. ive drank a bit of cider and ate some candy thats it.

and i found some vitamins at the store for 'mood-symptomatic relief of nervous tension, anxiety and stress'. it contains vitamins b6 & b12, folic acid, tyrosine, phenylalanine, st johns wort, ginseng, ginko and schizandra. i dont really know what any of them mean but there wasnt much choice so meh i really hope it does something. i seriously seriously dont know what to do with myself at the moment. still not calm and everytime i hear footsteps or doors from the house i feel like freaking out all over again.

Clonazapam is less addictive than Alprazolam (generic name for Xanax) but they are similar.

okay so the clinic emailed me back they said i can choose between a psychologist or a psychiatrist. whats the difference apart from the fact that the psychiatrist is more expensive? i just need someone to tell me if anythings wrong with me and then we go from there. if there is, obviously meds and or treatment?

    From my understanding:
A psychologist is more like a counselor and they can just talk to you. A psychiatrist is an actual doctor who can write prescriptions as well as counsel you. Good luck with everything girl
