Thumbs up Are there any Pagans and Other Non Christian/Judaic/Islamic people here?

By definition I mean people who don't follow just one of these religions.

I am an Eclectic Pagan, which means that I gather from all religions and belief systems to form my own.

I'm wanting to know how strong the Pagan Community is here on SW.

"Pagan" means that you believe in a Polytheistic religion or belief system. It can include, but is not limited to:

    Wiccan
    Native American Spirituality
    Hindu
    Shamanism
    Taoist
    Confucianism
    Shintoism
    Animism

...and anything else I may have missed...

My interest in paganism waxes and wanes over certain time periods. But I still read, believe, and actually practice more in the way of pagan religions than I do anything else (except Buddhism from time to time). I was a devoted Wiccan senior year of high school and most of my freshman year of college, but I fell away from wanting to practice that specific pagan religion. I am a part of a couple pagan communities, but rarely stay involved. I keep telling myself to get more involved again, read more, connect more with others, and really develop a more spiritual part of my life because I think it would really help me, but of course there's always something else to do...

I guess I would fall under Native American Spirituality. I'm pretty agnostic but I still practice smudging on a daily basis and participate in sweats and would love to get into gourd dancing again, though my mothers sponser died so I don't believe I am allowed to participate...not completely sure.

I went through a lot of awful stuff at one stage there, and the awful stuff is continuing and will never go away. At the beginning of the awful stuff I did the standard soul searching and checked out most of the various religions about. I even studied Shaman-ism for a few years. The guy running the Shaman class writes for a very large nationally published magazine (which is also licensed in many other countries) so he wasn't a hack. He always said when it came to your spiritual beliefs you had to "find your own truth".
As it is I don't believe in god or spirits or any of that. I really want to but I have not been given anything that would even pass as a co-incidence to a skeptic.
I really hope I'm wrong. I would like nothing better than to meet God so I can slap the prick across the face for all the smart-arse nasty games he as played with myself and my family.

When I was young(er), I went through a stage where I explored many "alternative" religions/belief systems/whatever, but found that the level of certainty it takes (for me) to say "I am a ______" is just not something I can get behind. I identify as being atheistic, but more in the indifferent about religion at best kind of way. I'm very much resigned to the idea that "all I know is that I know nothing," so I don't think that I know there is no god/gods/etc, I just know that it is not a very important question for me anymore. I used to find many religions "beautiful" despite not believing in them (I guess for the history, rituals, cultural effects), but over the years, I have become more inclined to see the voluntary disregard for logic that organized religion demands of its followers.

many generations of family tradition in Celtic 'green witchcraft' here !

Also, I'm discovering that this doesn't 'mesh' very well with some of the 'alternative' practices of my new neighbors down here way south of the border ... 'alternative' practices which involve way too much blood IMHO.

You Might Be A Pagan If...

    1. When you're sworn in in court, you bring your own grimoire.
    2. You've been seen talking to cats. They talk back. You understand what they're saying.
    3. When asked if you believe in God, you ask, "Which one?"
    4. You know what "widdershins" means. You apply it.
    5. You have an entire spice cabinet & you don't cook.
    6. You know that laurel & bay leaves are the same thing.
    7. You know that there are exceptions to the laws of physics. You've caused them.
    8. The first thing your guests say is, "My, that's a nice...altar...you have there."
    9. On Halloween, you yell "Happy New Year!" at passers-by.
    10. You know that Christmas trees were originally pagan symbols. That's why you bought one.
    11. When you say "Mother Nature," you don't mean it in an anthropomorphic way.
    12. You know that Gaia is NOT the lady on Captain Planet.
    13. You know that there are certain ways to draw a pentacle.
    14. You can explain the difference.
    15. You've spent the last year and a half looking for a familiar.
    16. You talk to trees. They talk back.
    17. You know dragons and fae exist. You've seen them.
    18. You've seen "The Craft." You know where they were making stuff up in "The Craft." You have explained this to other people. You can do it better than they did it in "The Craft."
    19. You understand the symbolism behind a maypole.
    20. You've ever ended a phone call with "so mote it be."
    21. You think that "Scott Cunningham" is a household name.
    22. You feel that there is no such thing as having too many cats.
    23. Someone asks you what you are doing wandering in the woods wearing a robe, and you answer cheerfully, "Going to church!"
    24. Your children go around telling people that "the Goddess loves you."
    25. You're reading this page.
    26. You understand what it's talking about.
    27. You have more to add.

I've been Pagan/Wiccan for almost 11 years. In the beginning I was more of a practitioner, but the past few years I've been more of a contemplative Wiccan.

It's funny that you posted this now, because I've been thinking lately about the Pagan community in general, and whether I even "fit in" with them anymore. I know there are all types of Pagans, but some of what Neo Pagans express just seems so...fluffy. Last night I came across a Pagan Facebook group that I was *this* close to joining, if only its page wasn't so overly cluttered with pentacles and "Blessed Be"s. I love my Goddess, I just think that being low-key preserves the integrity of my worship. Well, maybe I'll still join it. They've got really pretty pictures of altars and stuff

Anyway, from my experience with other Pagans, some of them have a tendency to be a bit flighty. I haven't made any long-lasting Pagan friends, which used to really get me down. As a result I keep to myself, and just read Witchvox articles alone.

This is kinda how I feel and why I eventually fell away from Wicca. Just that my views of everything didn't really match up with theirs. A lot of "Wiccans" I talked to always seemed to take a lot of things so literally that I didn't feel should be taken literally, or they would be way too anal about how everyone else's interpretation of something had to match theirs, otherwise they weren't a "true Wiccan." But it ultimately came across, not as though they really believed it and were devoted, but more like they were forcing themselves to act a certain way because they just wanted to follow an "alternative" religion and be "different." I just couldn't take it anymore. Kinda like you said, it was a little "fluffy," as in I just didn't believe that they were being truthful, and like they were "wearing" the religion as though it was some sort of fashion statement rather than their real religious path/beliefs.

I think a lot of people turn to paganism because they want a more low-key, drama-free religion than maybe what they were raised on, but then a few people bring all their drama and over-bearing dogma to it anyway and sort of "ruin" the community experience. Add to that the fact that "paganism" is so broad and encompasses so many paths and beliefs, it's hard to find common ground. So for a lot of pagans nowadays, it's just easier to go solo.

Too independent to follow a religion but my beliefs are more naturalistic.
Some questionnaire iI found online rated me as secular humanistic.
No idea if that is pagan, nor do I really care.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

    I love this thread already!!
    (Kudos to the OP)

I don't follow any set religion, I don't know what I fall under but I would consider myself agnostic'ish....I will not commit to being an atheist.

I still pray...in my own way.

I have this "odd" beliefe that a higher level of conciousness does exist...inside most of us (we just must tap into it). It's really hard to explain...hmm well I must say this thread has made me want to explore my spirituality further.

OMG...I also identify myself as an "Ecclectic Pagan" because I've also borrowed/stole a lot while also developing my own path. It's quite complex but also devoid of mythology as fact. I have two deities, and do dabble in spell casting though (don't we all!). I live in a Chicago burb, and the closest group I know is in Whiting, IN which is a bit far unfortunately.

There was a VERY brief time when I dabbled in paganism. I think I was looking for comfort via the rituals of the religion, as I had recently turned away from being devoutly invested in the Protestant faith. I never really believed in the gods/goddesses.

I'm happily agnostic atheist now. Secular Buddhism is the only "religion" I can think of that I could maybe get behind, and that's likely because it's not really a proper religion at all.

I was an Atheist into my 20's, but now I have two main deities: the one that created reality (or allows it to exist, i.e. the creator of the Heisenberg principle) and the personal deity that depends on your personal faith to exist and be defined. Any sentient being can have this second one as long as they can just ask the question, while the first deity is there whether you like it or not.
