Default Would it be a good idea to lose muscle mass along with body fat?

While my due date approaches, I'm looking at ways to get back in shape after the baby. My original plan was to restore my original shape was to nurse on demand (to burn fat faster) and to run (yay for jogging/running strollers) every day and resume my usual workouts (toning exercises, for the most part) every other day. However, I'm considering in also decreasing my muscle mass. B4 expecting, I had very large muscles and despite I liked how they looked it, it was a piece in the butt with some of my clothes (especially with shirts and sweaters). Are there any good workouts out there to decrease muscle mass? Is it a good idea to decrease muscle?

Never a good idea to waste muscle, with your circumstances the stroller idea is a good start.

i focus on cardio to stay lean, but weight training has endless benefits for your metabolism and staying young, and strong muscles burn calories even while at rest! I always look skinnier when i dont workout because i loose my shape, my legs thin out etc.., so its a quick way to slim down for me since i have little body fat. however, it is much easier to lose fat with muscles than without, which is what i assume you will want to do after your baby

Considering you'll be lifting bubba all the time the next 3 years, don't think those muscles are going anywhere. I have problems with shirts sometimes too but I think a toned arm looks much better than a soft one personally.

What did it for me, I mean what drastically made me all over tinier and thinner, was running, nothing else has even come close as far as weight loss/all over body shrinkage. I would alternate running outside and running on the treadmill, with the incline at 6 or 9, and alternating walking for one minute at 3.3 or 3.6, and running for thirty seconds to one minute at 6.6 - 9.0. I would adjust the speeds so I wouldn't get that awful side stitch and I could keep at it for 45 minutes to an hour. The treadmill technique with the incline and alternating sprint/walk/jog is supposed to help build and maintain muscle.... Just look at an Olympic sprinter's body vs. a long distance runner's body.

Seriously, do that 5 days a week, dedicate 30 minutes to one hour running! I really didn't lose *that* much muscle, I just continually challenge my body in order to keep improving. So I will do nothing but run (with moderate weight lifting intermittently) for one month, then the next month I will focus on weight training with minimal cardio. When I say minimal I mean something like 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week on the step mill, but NOT running. Running is it's own separate thing, IMO, as far as how it changes your body and mind, so it's best to incorporate other forms of cardio in with weight training. Also, yoga and pilates are great compliments to weight training!

Muscle = naturally burning more calories. It also makes you look slimmer. So unless you are absolutely jacked, losing muscle with fat makes very little sense. It will most likely make you look squishier and make losing weight harder.

I wanted to add, YES for me it was a good idea to DECREASE muscle mass! I have a hard time with clothes as well, my thighs are muscular and big in comparison to my waist, which is really tiny, so talk about trouble finding pants that fit! Every pair of jeans I have is skin tight around my thighs and way too loose around my waist. Most of my pants I don't even have to unbutton, I can just pull straight off! I'm talking like WAY loose around my waist and suffocatingly tight around my thighs.

I highly recommend doing nothing but running for one month. Long distance outdoor running alternated with the treadmill technique I described. Do that religiously for at LEAST one month, then work on your muscles. It sounds like you easily build muscle (I do too), so you won't have that much difficulty later on building up and sculpting/defining what you've already shrunk.

Thanks for posting this question! I totally understand the desire to lose muscle mass. I'd love to somehow decrease a majority of the muscle mass i have in my back that is the result of years of crazy pole tricks...i've become quite embarassed about that area because it is so masculine looking. I dont know how or if this could be accomplished though, lol!

Your body sounds exactly like mine. I'd be running, at a slower pace though, but I'm also gonna be pushing the jogging stroller as well.

It sure burns lots of calories; that's the reason why my arms look exactly the same as how they did b4 the bun in the oven but I'm also very buffy and I've always been all muscle (even with the extra fat my body has stored 'cause of the pregnancy, I still look very buffy). Most of the fat will be burned through the milk, but the remaining bits through running, and after losing as much fat as possible, I'll resume my toning exercises, but just enough to stay toned, not to look like She Hulk again.
