    Default Final Cut Pro

    Anyone tried this yet?

I have had a lot of trouble getting it to 'recognize the format' of very common video files.

Also the exporting of video files is tricky. It wants to make the somewhat smaller files with a black border around them, which is irritating as hell. I have tried many various settings and done many searches online for the solution to these problems, nothing seems to work. What's really weird is that when I first started using it back in January/February, I never had this problem.

I have a Mac, maybe that's part of the problem, but I doubt it.

I get the feeling that like a lot of expensive and complex hardware or software, it takes a while to get so you can use it--but that when you do, the results are well worth the effort.

You may be rendering your project at different pixel widths and heights. Get your source video, right click, and it should tell you the pixel dimensions. When you create a new project in Final Cut, be sure your project settings are set to these dimensions.

We use Vegas Movie Studio HD for our editing process - the precision we get is unmatched compared to other software.

I learned Final Cut Pro in grad school and we used Macs. I ended up buying Avid which was working better for me.

Unfortunately not. But I do believe there are ways to run Windows software on a Mac.

Your mac is not the issue. In fact final cut pro is only for macs and I think it was developed by Apple. There are certain file extensions that apples do not recognize. But .mov, mp4 (or whatever it is), etc should be fine. wmv does not work though.

All the original footage is unfortunately in .MPG format. The quality is fine, though it may not be HD strictly speaking, I don't know--but it's really close, a great picture. But I have to convert the files to .Mov and .mp4 using MPEG Streamclip. But then Final Cut Pro seems to have trouble recognizing it or matching the format or whatever of the .mov files. I should try it again to see exactly what the little box popped up and said.

I even got some super expert on Final Cut Pro to give me advice about the problem, but it still did it anyway. Weird...

The MPEG Streamclip is so easy to work with that I've just been using that. But it seems a shame to have this hotshit video editing program and not use it due to some stupid little glitch.

Thanks to all for the replies, I will take a look at the Avid and the Vegas programs. I actually have Bootcamp (which can run Windows) on this Mac, I just never installed the Windows for it.

I haven't donr FCP for yrs since I'm mostly in real estate now but i loved it. However it is all about the settings. It can be picky. From what Iremember, MPG worked fine, or Iused Apple's own VIDEO CONVERTER software.

Used to be an avid tech too...so its ok. FCP was my preference

Don't know vegas, but a friend swears by it

Hate hate hate MPEG Streamclip. With a passion. Try this - take all your files and dump them into FLV Crunch. Convert to .mov. It's a simple, quick little program that'll take your files and convert them into Final Cut friendly files.

As for your black borders, it means your sequence settings are much different from your clip settings. Usually, a dialogue box will pop up and ask you if you want to match your sequence settings to your clip settings. Hit yes. Otherwise, you can try to manually change them by right-clicking your sequence in the BROWSER (on the left), then go to SETTINGS. Go to FRAME SIZE and play around with it. If your clips look tiny on the screen, it's because your sequence frame size is set too large (probably HD). Try one of the NTSC settings.

Typically, if I'm cutting a ton of different media together - DVD clips, GoPro, stuff pulled off YouTube, etc, I'll set the sequence like this:
FRAME SIZE: 720x480, ASPECT RATION DV (3:2)
PIXEL ASPECT RATIO: NTSC-CCIR 601/DV(720-480) --- (since I'm going to burn to DVD, I use an NTSC ratio. SQUARE should only be used for online presentations. HD is self-explanatory)
    FIELD DOMINANCE: Lower (Even)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97

Otherwise, if you're still getting black bars, well, it may be because your clips are shot in different aspect ratios. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about that. If you want to make everything look uniform and add black bars, go to your VIEWER, then go to the MOTION tab, then go to CROP and adjust accordingly. If you want to get rid of the black bars and fill the screen, you can play with the SCALE bar and make your clip bigger. Keep in mind resizing makes the video more pixelated because you're trying to blow up the image - like blowing up a photo. But by and large, by using the 720x480 Aspect Ratio, you can letterbox everything by cropping it if need be.

    Hope this helps!

I'm by no means a video expert but I am an audio guy who works every day with video guys. Final Cut Pro is worth learning how to master. It has pretty much crippled Avid which was THE digital video editing system for years before FCP came along. I do quarterly meetings at Avid's offices outside of Boston and if you mention FCP around their building you pretty much get taken out back and beaten-up.

It is a Mac based system and sometimes you need to do file conversions. FCP just doesn't like all file formats. A lot of guys I know use a program called Handbrake to convert the files. I'm pretty sure it's free.

As I said, I'm no expert but if you've already invested in what is considered to be a very good program it seems like it would make sense to push on through the idiosyncrasies. Good Luck!

Handbrake is a miracle - but hunt for an older version. Not as many bells and whistles, but much more powerful.
Then take the .mp4 files that you got off Handbrake and dump them into FLV Crunch to create editable FCP .mov files.

I use Premiere and Vegas. Never learned Final Cut. I would suggest Premiere as it is more recognized in the industry than Vegas, has an export to FC that you can use if your editing partner(s) have FC, and is also pre-installed to accept more codecs/formats than Final Cut.

And with Final Cut X being so shitty, most companies are abandoning the FCP format altogether. Most pros I know are shifting to Premiere, too.

Sorry to sound dumb but can you use finl cut pro on a normal windows laptop? i don't have a mac (never understood what all the fuss was about), but all the info seems to be telling me FCP is only for macs... that can't be true surely? If so, what is the best video software editing program out there I can use? Must have green screen/ chromakey ability.

I believe Adobe Premiere runs on Windows - it's pretty much caught up to FCP (and exceeded FCP X). Most of my editor friends have switched over anyway, even the ones on Macs, because FCP X has gone pro-sumer instead of professional.
