Default How many of you have these things??

I was just wondering, how many of you girls have these things?

    Health/ dental
    Retirement
    other insurances??
    Charity donations
    etc etc?

After last year I hadn't ever had to pay taxes because of the kids and owning a house, gave me enough to get a refund.
This year, because of my neglect for these things I now must pay taxes. ( One kid is 21 and the other lives with dad) Really has got me thinking about how I need to better take care of myself and get started on all of this so my taxes are minimal at best. I would rather have all of this than give the IRS more money.

Not to mention in 10 yrs on CAM, I was so busy raising the kids, I never went to the dentist nor to the doctor unless emergency. Just wasn't enough money at the end of the month.
This has me thinking about whether or not it is worth doing cam with ZERO benefits.
I think one thing people do not understand is when you do work for an employer they offer tons of benefits so the trade off of making less money might be more beneficial?
    Please share your thoughts.
P.S. I am also reading the book SMART WOMEN FINISH RICH which has me REALLY thinking about the urgency of getting my financial house in order more.

well Ive been looking for health ins myself. theres a site http://www.healthcare.gov/index.html that can help you get started. you enter you state and your basic info and it will give you basic price/plan comparisons.

But overall working for a company isnt much better because you still pay for your benefits and once you quit or retire your benefits disappear (unless you happen to be union which is rare lately). I think the only advantage to having an employer when it comes to benefits is that its forced on you, so its one less thing you have to worry about/figure out for yourself and the cost is slightly less.

I can't get insured because of pre-existing conditions, but I could get state insurance for about $300/month. My husband is insured for $200/month. I do not have retirement (except SS), I do have life insurance, renter's insurance, and AD&D (accidental death & dismemberment) insurance. I have made donations ($500), but to a friend so it's not tax deductible. I will only be able to claim a tiny bit of the health insurance cost, and my medical bills do not add up to enough to claim (they're about $4000 total this year, but I think it has to be 10% of your income). I will also be able to claim student loan interest. However, I'm paying an extraordinary amount of taxes just to cover my butt (I think my last payment was almost $7000). I do not expect to owe anything this year, but I also wouldn't be surprised if I don't get anything back.

Health, yes. I'm Canadian, we pay for that through our taxes
Dental, yes, through my vanilla job
Retirement, yes. Some through my vanilla job, most from my own savings.
    Charity, hell yes.

I look at charitable donations as a way to reduce the amount of tax I pay that gets spent on government policies I don't support (war, prisons, over-policing), instead allowing me to direct more of my $$$$ towards things I DO support (social justice spending). Charitable spending is a great way to reduce the amount of tax you have to pay if there's a cause you believe in and would support anyway.

@anonymous camgirl, you make a really important point in this thread, one that's raised here from time to time but still bears repeating. Beyond the tax we have to pay out of our earnings, we also need to factor in the costs of health and dental care and retirement saving into our earnings requirements. What we earn on any given day/week/month is never totally discretionary income to do with as we please.

One point I will make is that it's becoming increasingly common for many job sectors (particularly the most low-paid forms of work) to not provide any of the health/dental/retirement benefits you've mentioned, so having a 'vanilla' job doesn't necessarily mean that one will have that advantage over being a fully self-employed cam chica. (edit: Annabellz posted that first)

I'm really glad you're feeling compelled to sort out your finances. I'm a firm believer that we can only make truly informed decisions about our goals when we know exactly where we stand currently, what our needs are, how much of our $$$$ goes where, and how different options impact upon both.

If you're interested, ManyRoses started a great money management group that may be of some benefit in figuring out how to re-arrange your finances and spending. You can find it in the 'community' link at the top of the page, then scrolling down to 'groups'. It's called the "Paying Off Debts and Saving Support Group"

I have both health and dental insurance. We also have a small life policy on me through my husband's work. Anyways, that's about it. I'm currently looking into retirement investments (which my husband has already started for him), as well as my own life policy. Unfortunately I have a lot of health issues going on....so having a decent life policy is a must, especially having children.

    Health insurance/life/dental = around $600 a month
Savings account for baby = $400/month
    My savings: $200/month

I also organize walk-a-thons for a specific charity that is close to my heart and plan to set up routine donations to them as well.

I have health insurance that I pay for on a student plan. It's a really good plan, even covered all my maternity care. I've been using it the whole time I've been in college. You are eligible even if you are enrolled part time at a university or community college. For my age it is $1596/year which is $133/month. You can pay in 3, 6, 9, or 12 months. If you are in college and need insurance I highly recommend checking it out. If your school is not listed search for ACSA (American College Student Association), that's the plan I use. I pay for this with my financial aid at the start of each fall.

My children are on CHIP which is Texas Children's Health Insurance but I could cover them on my plan or Blue Cross Blue Shield on their Blue Pathway plan, which is where we cover my husbands daughter for only $100/month per child ($134/mo with dental). It costs me less to cover my kids with the state plan so I go that route for them... wish we could cover his daughter that way too but since she doesn't live with us we can't.

Dental I use HumanaOne, for only $15.99/mo which covers 100% of preventative care (cleanings, etc) and almost all of filings and other small procedures.

    https://www.humanaonedental.com/home.aspx

Or you could always wait for ObamaCare to kick in and cover us all. But even that costs us.......

Good luck! I'm going to check out that book also...
    xoxo ~ Sarah

No problem!!! Seriously, anyone in college should check it out. I think the only stipulation is that you have to be taking at least one on campus class if you are also doing online classes. And they have some pre existing condition limitations but I think most places do. Glad I could help!!!

check www.ehealthinsurance.com to compare and buy health insurance policies
keep in mind, the lower the monthly fee the higher the deductible usually
so if u find a plan thats $50/month but with a $10,000 deductible, your responsible for the $10,000 before the plan pays

as for dental, i usualy google dental/medical schools in my area since they tend to offer cheap services since supervised students are performing them

the one i go to now is only $15 for cleanings/xrays, and all of their other services are priced way lower than regular dentists offer

    Let's get this money ladies!!

Health, Dental,Savings and YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS I give to Charity...<----"paying is backwards" Ppl once helped me so now I help them. My savings is pulled monthly by how much I made that month income, I also save for taxes. When a girl is single she has to run her own home and ALL OF THOSE are very important to have. I may trip but i will not fall.

Health insurance? Dental? Vision? Lol I WISH. I am so thankful that I am a healthy person and never used my insurance even when I had it. I'm very anti-doctors but I do realize the importance of being insured in case of emergencies. I will honestly probably hold out until I get married in a couple of years (hopefully) and get on my hubby's insurance plan then. I'm not advocating anyone else do that. As far as charity my church asks for a 10% tithe so I count that as my charitable contribution because those funds are used to help un- and underemployed families in the ward with rent, groceries, etc. As far as retirement I don't even know where to start with that one, but again, I'm holding out to marry rich because I want to think of these things as little as possible and I just want to be taken care of. I guess the money I'm saving *could* count towards my retirement but I don't have a specific plan or anything. And I should. This thread is making me feel very unprepared but it's so overwhelming I don't even know where to start.

Well?? I think the first thing you should do is start an emergency fund for several months of expenses (if you don't already have one).. Money for an EMERGENCY! not to be touched for anything else.. then I would set up an IRA.. for your retirement I went with my bank's IRA the kind you can invest in stocks, etfs, and mutual funds.. I think those are the first and foremost most important things.. Health and Dental and all that is important but also alot more pricey than saving up some money.. for lifes' lil disasters you know?? And honestly, unless you have quite a few assets that you can be sued for?? ( In the USA) I would not get health and dental.. til you do unless you can afford it comfortably. That's just my opinion.

We don't have health/dental/vision insurance. It's not really in the budget, and we never go to the doctor anyways. Just part of our lifestyle, we're pretty "natural" minded.

We are starting a savings fund though. Always useful. I have some bonds too, from when I was little, so that's a backup for us as well. As soon as I can get things more financially straight, the plan is to invest in stocks and maybe gold/silver.

We have all of the above but dental, thanks to the US Military. Otherwise... ugh, I shudder to think where we'd be.
