Default Software download to run cam? Ubuntu 10.10

Hey everybody! First off, thank you all so much for this forum! Oh my god, the wealth of information is amazing.

I did my best with the search function, so I hope I didn't miss anything.

Basically, I'm not clear on exactly how the cam itself works. Once you send your application/docs, the company sends you software to download and install . . . ? Or some are browser/Adobe Flash based?

I use Linux exclusively, and rely on it for college. I haven't bought a webcam yet, but it looks like a lot of Logitech cams (such as Pro 9000) should work out-of-box with my operating system (mic, too).

Anyway, I've done softcore/pinup, phone, and a handful of hardcore before so I understand what I'm getting into . . . yet I would hate to buy a webcam and then find out I also need to buy a computer (or buy Windows and set up a dual boot, but since I rely on this computer for other important stuff, I'd be uncomfortable messing with it).

Ack, so long-winded. Direct stupid newbie question: do I have to run Windows software for every site?

I do not think so. As long as your web browser is flash enabled then you should be fine as many cam sites rely on flash.

Oh! Awesome! I'd been seeing a lot of conflicting information. :\ Your Youtube channel looks handy, too! Thanks so much.

Is there a thread I should be looking at for maybe a list of Flash-based sites? I know it's annoying when n00bs show up and demand answers, heh. Sorry. Streamate's site (somewhere in the application section) mentions a Windows XP requirement . . . but sometimes that's just code for "have pretty new hardware" without listing RAM requirements or anything specific. I dunno.

SM and MFC are the only ones I've researched so far (as far as whether my performance would be a good fit), so I just wanna read 'til my eyeballs fall out, but hopefully only about companies I can actually use! But that sounds like a personal problem. ;P So I appreciate the help!
