    Default How to sleep less?

I searched and didn't find a thread like this. If there is, I'm sorry, and I hope a mod will merge mine into it.

So I have problems with my sleeping. I can and will sleep 10-14 hours a day. I think this is horrible. I know that I would not need this much sleeping, but I have no idea, how to get along with 7-8 hours tops.

I enjoy sleeping of course, but it's getting on my nerves, it hurts my earning potential, since I have other things to do as well, and then I hardly have time left for working.

Lately I've been trying to set the alarm clock, but even after sleeping 8 hours I cannot seem to be able to get out of the bed. I cannot hold my eyes open, it literally burns and hurts, I don't have the energy to move. If I force myself after a few hours I will be dead sleepy again. Like yawning evey 30-60 seconds, eyes closing, light starts hurting my eyes.. etc

When first I noticed it I thought it was the anti-baby pills, cause those can have this side-effect, but I'm not on the pills for 2 years already, and it's not getting better. Ocassionally its better on it's own, like I do nothing, but I can get up after a 6-7 hours, but it doesn't last long, I fall back to the 12 hour long sleeping.

I used to be on bloodtest cause of the iron, but I have no problems with iron in my blood, cause that could cause this as well.

At the moment I don't take vitamins, but when I took them, it was the same.

I have no idea already, how to get rid of at about half of my sleeping. It's only getting annoying since last year, because before that I didn't work at all, so my hours left after sleeping were just enaugh to do everything else, I wanted and needed to do. Now it's messed up, because I'd need more hours cause of working.

I have a firend, he sleeps like 6 hours a day, he has tons of hobbies, plays cards, dances, goes out frequently, spends lots of time doing his hobbies, he runs his business, and just does so many useful things and I really envy him. And I just cannot get up, cause it hurts or I'm always sleepy while other people do so many useful stuff.

He said, he was forced to live like this, because he was working while studying and he also wanted to spare some time for his hobbies, and now it's so natural for him. Ocassionally he sleeps some more, like in every 2-3 weeks, but he really doesn't need it.

I wanna sleep like that! I'm really fed up with wasting so much time! Anyone has ideas? How can I get rid of the constant sleepiness?

i can relate to this. i could sleep like 12 or 13 hours every single night if i let myself.
i really think that everyone just needs a totally different amount of sleep and theres not much you can do to change it.

you can check these alternative sleep cycles out http://www.highexistence.com/alternate-sleep-cycles/
i tried one and failed miserably..but i had been up all day..and then went to sleep and set an alarm clock to wake me up in 30 mins.

    Very cool article

Working in this industry definitely gives us an opportunity to play around with sleep schedules. I tend to try not to look at a clock when I wake up, because I find myself immediately thinking "Oh I only got four hours of sleep", when my body woke me up at that point because i'm rested. I find a one hour nap before work does wonders for me. If I get that in, I'll sleep 4-6 hours a night. If I miss my nap I turn into the 10-12 hour sleeper.

I am a looong sleeper as well. I noticed cutting out booze and going to bed earlier helps a lot.

I also need a lot of sleep and I find it helps me function a lot better when I get 8-10 hours. If I have to get up early I need a nap in the afternoon. I have a couple friends who can't sleep (one I think consumes too much caffeine) and they have all kinds of problems, even black out randomly. Personally, I think at least one of them drinks way too much coffee and it makes him not sleep. I just make enough time to sleep and consider it a necessity for quality of life.

Honestly you should discuss this with your doctor. You might have a sleep disorder which is preventing you from getting proper sleep.

There are a couple things that could be going on, but you definitely need to go see your doctor because you need blood tests!

I was having the same issues last summer, and while I was convinced that there was something wrong with me, I think it was instead a result of me completely overextending myself during the schoolyear, getting like 4hrs of sleep a night average, pulling a few all-nighters a week, and developing what is called a "sleep debt", when you don't sleep enough for an extended period of time, basically your body becomes tres pooped and needs a lot of extra sleep to recover. At the beginning of this summer the same thing was happening to me but this time instead of fighting it I basically didn't do a whole lot and rested and slept like 12 hours a day for the first two weeks of may and then...fine! Back to 8hrs a night naturally.

Alternatively it's a known fact that when you constantly oversleep too much, this can contribute to increased daytime sleepiness too.

I was diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism when I got blood tests done as well as low vitamin b12. I tried taking levothyroxine for 6 months and then decided to stop since it didn't seem to really be helping with any of my symptoms and was making me super hungry all the time which I found annoying since I really need to watch what I eat. The b12 vitamins definitely help though, I still notice if I forget to take them for a few days I feel soooo wiped and also moody. B12 vitamins and a multivitamin are good for keeping your energy and health up anyways though so I would suggest just trying them and see if there is any difference.

The other thing that could be going on is depression. I've been super depressed in the past and o-m-g it is terrible and it can totally kill all your energy and motivation. The sleepiness was actually the major tip-off for me since I am used to being crazy busy gogogo and functioning on less sleep and am typically really motivated to do things and keep busy. If you think you might be depressed and that might be causing it try doing something everyday that you like in the morning AFTER excersising. Excersising is soooo good for your mental health and energy so really try to squeeze that in, for an even more efficient schedule make your morning excersise activity something fun like a dance or yoga class or go for a bike ride or swimming or something else you like

This. You might not be hitting the right sleep cycles.

Are you fighting your natural sleep rhythm? For two years I have tried to be a day person, even got a day job. Tried going to bed earlier, tried staying up 24 hrs to reset my sleep schedule- didn't work. I'm a night person and always will be. Now I go to bed between 4-6am and sleep until between 2-3pm. I know it isn't ideal, but it works for me and I feel a LOT better.

I feel that mediocrity. I'm happiest going to bed between midnight and 2 am, and waking up around 10 am. Waking up at 6 or 7 am KILLS me so much.

But OP, you may need to see a sleep doctor just to check it out. There are a few sleep disorders and maybe you have one. If you can, go get it checked out.

I'm kind of fighting my rythm, so that might be that then. And I also have problems going on in my head lol, so I'm looking into counseling now, I never imagined that depression and such could cause this too much sleeping problem. Hope that will help too. And probably I should check out if have these disorders. Falling asleep is a pain in my ass, no matter, how tired I am, but when I managed to start sleeping I cannot stop it.

Thank you for all these helpful answers!

B12 is great. Also the sleep cycle thing... If I get 6 hours I function as well as 9 hours cause I've finished my sleep cycle. A cup of green tea and doing some exercise in the morning even if it's just a quick walk seems to help me get going. I just got a humidifier that uses essential oils and I love it. I put sleepy lavender in it and I sleep so well when I use it and wake up freshed. It's probably just psychological but it works!

cut out the gluten. Simplify your diet for a few days and add a few things back like dairy and meat and see how you feel. Cutting out the gluten would probably almost immediately help.

i was just about to post a thread on this!
i usually sleep from 4.30/6am-3.30-5pm and id like to sleep less! every now n then i would wake up near midday n have difficulty going back to sleep but instead of getting up i somehow fall asleep again till like 5pm. i know we work strange hours and i work 4 nights plus run a business during the day, but id love to fall back into a semi-normal sleep schedule of 8-9 hrs per night then wake up refreshed and ready to work. what sucks about home businesses/freelancing is that you set your own hours. can be good but its also an excuse to oversleep and do nothing. someone keep me on my toes!

^ You work a lot anouk but I find on work days forcing myself up at 12-1pm (even though its not easy) and getting stuff done then start a little later 8-10pm so I can have a 1 hour nap before work. Then I still get shit done but feel like Im rested before work. Or if going back to sleep is a bad idea for you, sometimes I just go to the gym right before work then the adrenaline rush keeps me going.

    Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine.

I snore, like a barely muffled chainsaw. Wake up with a sore throat, and cotton mouth. I didn't know snoring was more than a problem anyone else trying to sleep. I didn't know that waking up 10-15 times a night to change position wasn't normal. I didn't know that the sensation of falling that would jolt me awake two or three times was a signal I had stopped breathing. I didn't know that the reason I did not remember any dreams was because I was not having any dreams. Because of my snoring and all of the interruption I was not falling deeply enough asleep to enter REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement). That is the sleep where you dream. Where your conscious mind and sub-conscious have a sit down and talk about their day. Where in the brain stops releasing waking chemicals and the heart and the other organs slow down to rest too.

Is it a little embarrassing? Yes. I have to wear a mask to sleep. That leaves marks on my face. These take about an hour to fade.

Do I feel rested? Oh hell Yes! 8 blissful hours of zonked the fuck out. My memory improved like right away. Remembering what I just read, or where my car keys were. I was a lot less stressed and grouchy. Lifted the brain fog where in I felt like I took a bunch of cold medicine.

If anyone thing I could say has improved my life. I would have to say a CPAP machine.

many doctors have told me ten hours is what most ppl need..i will sleep at least ten after i work. ill sleep longer if i have "sleep debt" ( if you haven't gotten the proper hours, your body will need to make up for that, doctors have told me it takes a week of sleep to get proper rest to make up for one all nighter sometimes). is your sleep restless?

Oh no doubt after I go threw little to no sleep the 3 days of my work week a better portion of Sunday becomes nothing but sleeping until
Monday. So I totally see how that sleep debt works. Even though I may not get a appropriate amount of sleep for the duration of those days my body definitely shuts down and forces the rest on me. Sometimes even Mondays are dicey.

I like sleeping a lot too. I think a big part of it is just habit. If your body gets used to sleeping 10 hours it will naturally lengthen out the time you spend in each stage of sleep to match that time. Basically the opposite of what sleep hackers try to do when they lessen the amount they need.

Try to wake up at the exact same time every day, regardless of what time you go to bed. After it becomes a habit your internal clock will adjust each sleep stage to make sure you go through the sleep stages most efficiently before that set wake up time.

Also make sure you do something productive with the extra time or something that is rewarding to you to give yourself some positive reinforcement.

Another tip is to make sure to eat your last meal or snack a few hours before going to bed.
Your body normally releases growth hormone at night which helps your cells repair themselves and rejuvenate, but if you have insulin in your bloodstream (which is released when you eat) then it will interfere with the growth hormone.

I know this post is older, but it stuck out to me. I have a sleeping disorder and can sleep all day if I allow myself, and sometimes I end up needing a nap in the evening because i am so darn tired even after 12 hours of sleep. I also have night terrors...I will get up...look at my bf wide eyed (still sleeping) and have a discussion with him...OR I will shake in my sleep and wake up screaming..because my dreams are so real..sometimes it can be what you eat right before bed....so you might want to see if there is a pattern.
