What kind of video, what is it for, and why are you converting it?

    The question is too vague.

I'm converting it because not all computers can handle 1080i HD .MTS files.. my computer can't even handle it, so converting it into codex like .AVI or something makes it smaller... something like that. On my file converter there's two .avi options there's .avi (divx5) and .avi (xvid). there's also .mp4. I'm trying to learn what option is best and why.

The most widely-used formats are wmv, mov and mp4. I'd use one of those. Mov files are generally larger and usually for Apple products. I'd go with one of the other two if you're only uploading one version of each file.
