    Default some HD encoder questions

I have a new computer with an i7 processor and 16 gb of Ram. Attached are a few screenshots of my settings and what is going on.Screen Shot 2012-08-17 at 7.29.54 AM.pngScreen Shot 2012-08-17 at 7.30.12 AM.png

    1. I have my encoder set up to the new specifications. My fps is set to 29.97 (as you can see in my screenshot), however when I take a look in the encoder log while I am streaming I see that its only going at 15 or 16 fps. Now I do know I have Auto Adjust->degrade quality (as per the requirements on the HD configuration page), is this why it is only going at 16 fps and not 29.97 like I have set it to?

    2. In the encoder log (while I am streaming) I see that my bit rate is only going at 539 kbps, however in my settings (again as per the requirements) I have it set to 800 kbps. Does this have to do with my upload speed and the fact that I have Auto Adjust->degrade quality (as per the requirements on the HD configuration page)?

^^^ sounds like your ISP's upload speed is creating the bottleneck ... assuming of course that your camera / video conversion is capable of keeping up with 30 fps / 800kbps.

Well I am using the elgato video capture. According to their specs on their website it is more then capable of 800kbps. I have a blackmagic, but am selling it because it is not compatible with my EviD100 and won't work for livestream with my Sony Handycam either.

I agree, it looks like your upload speed is the cause. Even with my upload speed at 35mbps I still get drops down to 23-25ish while running two encoders.

Setting it to 29.97 just means that the highest it CAN go is 29.97, if the upload speed allows.

Another possibility if using an ElGato is that your USB port's data transfer rate is limiting the maximum frames per second. Are your USB ports rated 3.0 or just 2.0 ?

Also, the ElGato's data transfer specs are 1.4 megs, but operating in 640 x 480 native mode.

I'm also not clear at all how the Black Magic isn't compatible with both of your analog cameras. With the breakout cable, it should be capable of accepting every analog video format there is !!! And the Black Magic's data transfer specs are WAY up there, providing you are using Thunderbolt or USB 3.0

I know you would think with the breakaway cable it would be supported, but it is not. I cannot recall exactly what it is, blackmagic support tried to explain it to me but it was a bit over my head, but the EviD100 is not a compatible camera. One of my Sony cameras does work with it, however I do not like to use it for camming because it cannot do remote pan/zoom/tilt. Furthermore even with the breakaway cables I was required to buy a y/c splitter which is not commonly sold in electronics stores up here. I had to order it online and when it arrived everything attached properly, but there was no image. I called blackmagic support and that's when they explained to me that my cameras do not work with their device. Very frustrating. You would think the blackmagic would work with every analog camera but apparently not.

My only other option is to use the Elgato with my usb 2.0 port. My computers do not have USB 3.0. I have macs and they only come with USB 2.0, firewire and thunderbolt. My machines are only about a year old and I am not ready to completely replace them seeing how things are currently going on streamate with traffic/etc. Buying a new computer is 1-2 weeks worth of income for me.

I recently got in touch with another cam girl on twitter who has a very similar set up to mine (she has a i7 imac with 16 gb of ram and works with an EviD70 camera and elgato capture card). She is lucky enough to live in an area where better internet upload is available (very close to me). She was telling me 15 fps was what she was seeing before she switched her internet to a higher package. Now she gets 25-28 fps. Her upload speed is about 18 mbps though. My area does not have that package yet . But hopefully it will be here within a few months.

Surprising to hear that the camera compatibility problems are real. For better or worse, there isn't a lot of video capture hardware out there that supports Apple thunderbolt besides Black Magic. Hopefully some 3rd party developer will step up ( but it appears that they're concentrating on USB 3.0 ).

It also sounds like the feedback from the other camgirl supports the original conclusion that your local internet upload speed is the limiting factor.

It would not surprise me if Elgato came out with something comparable to the BM intensity given that Elgato has made some thunderbolt additions to their product line up.

would setting it to "drop frames" fix the problem? if you're dropping too many frames it's definitely because your upload speed isn't high enough, and it can cause your hd icon to drop. but it won't automatically adjust the bitrate. also, you can try setting it to 29.97 fps and 650 bitrate.

Interesting. I just logged in for a few minutes with my logitech C9000. My fps was going at around 30, however my ranking on the page was down near the bottom of page 1. I logged back in using my eviD100 and my fps was only going at 15/16, but my ranking was back up to mid page. Weird. I noticed when I first got my EviD100 last year my placement went up significantly (from second page to mid page 1). I am wondering if fps has more to do with lighting then it does with your upload speed. I know logitechs tend to fix some very bad lighting (they have some light absorbing quality). I just do not like the zoom/pan quality. Plus I hate software zoom/pan and much prefer the convenience of a remote.

^^^ assuming that your C9000 connection bypassed the ElGato vidcap module, and given that your C9000 video stream was able to upload at ~30fps, this clearly points back to the ElGato converter performance as the 'bottleneck'.

Interesting observations about relative ranking. It sure would be helpful to know which factors the ranking algorithm is based on !!!

Actually it turned out to be camtwist... I had the fps in camtwist set to 15.

Since the elgato/sony won't show up in the available video source (it does this with PCs as well-the startech capture card won't show up) I have to use camtwist. With my PC I had to use spitcam in order to get the camera to show up.

Now I upped the settings in camtwist to 40 fps. Went back online and my encoder was going at between 23-30.
