i'm in the market for a new laptop myself and having previously had an asus i wouldnt buy one again as the build quality is suspect. if these are your two options and you dont want the water muddied by having a multitude of others to choose from then i'd go for the vaio. although its got slightly less ram than the asus. their build quality is much better.

    Thanks Bekie!

I don't mind having my waters muddied by other options! As long as they're a similar price range it's all cool - I'd rather get the best for the budget I'm on for this.

Vaios are well-known for their durability. I just got one not too long ago, and it's great. It's not quite as good as the computer I was using, but our desktop is custom-built with 16 GB of RAM, which isn't going to be matched in a cheap laptop. NOTHING is going to slow down that desktop. :-P My Vaio still works for everything I need, though.

Oh, and Vaios come with some awesome software, like Vegas Movie Studio. I haven't gotten it figured out yet, but it's touted as the best video editor out there.

Hmm....interesting! I have a Vaio, but I don't use it for camming - I have a desktop for that. I CAN tell you that physically, my laptop is incredibly durable - I've beaten the crap out of it and it's still running! (With one screen replacement)

That said, it is absolutely awful for speed etc, but that is probably because it is about 4 years old now! I also have to say that I HATE the screen. The new one is fine, but the one it came with was horrible for glare - it just reflected everything - it was like a mirror/computer!

I'm actually lusting after an Asus right now, so it's interesting to know about the build quality...I'm looking at new systems that are all gamer systems - it doesn't necessarily mean that they will be the best quality, but it usually means that they will handle camming better.
I take cash, debit or credit. I just don't take shit.

DP runs on the Vaio i7, its handles all the databases used to process the numbers everyday.

It was bought for its low rate of breakdown and general durability.

It does its job extremely quickly compared to our other systems (Packard Bell/Fujitsu Siemens).

The i7 is left on 24/7 everyday and never skips a beat.

I don't have Vegas Movie Studio on my Sony VAIO laptop. Maybe my laptop is too old...it's a VGN-CR320E.

I've actually heard from some pretty tech-savvy people that Asus is awesome. I don't know specifically about their laptops, but I bought their i7 desktop on recommendation from four knowledgeable people who could've gotten more money out of me if I'd gone with another brand instead.

I've had mine for about 2 months and so far I love it. It's very quiet and I can run about ten different programs without even hitting 15% CPU usage.

In the past, Sony has been known for building very rugged hardware. But they are also known for a 'less than optimum' price to performance ratio.

Also, with this magnitude of an investment, I would question whether settling for an I5 processor is a wise move if camming will be the major application.

Camming absolutely will be the main application. However, it's weird, I've heard very different things regarding the importance of an i7 processor, especially when compared to other things. For example, a laptop with an i5 processor with 3.10 ghz and RAM up to 8GB would be on-par or even faster than an i7 processor with less? Having said this, I am no techie. I can only really go by things others are saying, but it's so hard to make up my mind when information conflicts so often.

How much more worthwhile would it be to save up more for an i7 processor instead, even if it has less ghz and RAM etc than one I could afford more comfortably now?

Would it be possible to save for a higher end i7?

As its for your business and this will probably be one of the most important investments for it I would save up and get the best available, dont worry about the money in the long run as it will make far more back than you paid.

if you want it just for general use and camming, then the processors you've chosen will be fine. however if you want to do any kind of video editing then you need to look at better grade processors.

all processors are not considered equal either. there are a variety of different types of processors even within each family, i3, i5, i7 etc it can be quite confusing.

i recommend you pick up a copy of what laptop magazine, go to the reviews section at the back where all laptops are listed, and select those in your price range that are listed as being ok for gaming and video editing. simples...

Does this one seem preferable to the others I've posted?

    £529

    - i7 processor.
    - 2.2 GHz, 6MB cache memory
    - 6GB RAM
    - Hard Drive: 500GB, 5400RPM, SATA

    - However... no USB 3.0
    - Also, I am unsure as to whether it has firewire and bluetooth or not. If not... gah.
    - Bad reports of low sound quality.

    http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Laptops/buy...-Laptop/791580

    £650

    - i7 processor.
    - 2.3 GHz
    - 6 GB RAM
    - Hard Drive: 750 GB
    - Bang & Olu quality speakers (yum)
    - Bluetooth
    - 2 x USB 3.0

    - Unsure if has firewire.

Hmmm... I am reluctant to spend £650, but I think I might have to. So. Many. Damn. OPTIONS!!! >.<

Many thanks for any input my friends!

if you want video editing i recommend a dedicated graphics card. usb 2 is more than adequate. why do you think you need firewire / bluetooth? dont get taken in by things like b&o speakers. you'll always be better off with buying a set of external speakers to use, trust me.

I've heard it's getting increasingly important for some reason. Why? I don't know. I don't even know what it's for, or why it's preferable. But my laptop-seeking instinct tells me that 3.0 feels right. ;P

why do you think you need firewire / bluetooth?
Firewire: For future camming with camcorder endeavours.
Bluetooth: My mobile phone uses bluetooth. I have pics I can't upload... Ah want bluetooth!

True, though I've never bought speakers, and I can't justify spending extra on speakers for music. I travel a lot too, so if great sound comes with the laptop, meaning I won't have to cart around external speakers, that's cool for me.

Any time that you need more graphics speed (video editing, playing computer games, etc), you should get a dedicated graphics card. You don't NEED one, but it certainly helps. It will say in the description if the laptop has one.

USB 2 is just able to transfer information faster than USB. In theory, it would mean less lag for your webcam. USB 3 is over 10 times faster than USB 2.

USB 3 is faster than firewire.

What do you guys think about this desktop. .... I'm mainly looking for something that is going to be able to handle split camming and video editing. Do you think the price is good or would there be something out there that is better for my money?

I don't think you need a dedicated graphics card if you're only doing something like c4s. I think the dedicated card is more for the professional high-end video editing. I really don't know what you do though. I do know that I didn't get one, don't currently need one, and was reassured I could get a nice one installed later for maybe $200 at the most... if I need it, which I doubt I will.

That's cool. If I don't need one for working stream-based camsites, I am not too bothered. My eyes are increasingly set on that £650 ASUS N55SL-S2019V though, which fortunately has a dedicated graphics card.

    ^^^ thinking that the L 650 price ~ L 150 premium may be well worth it !

Also following up on earlier comments, there is a wide range of actual performance difference among I5 processors. True that one particular hand-selected I5 can keep up with a 'low end' I7. But in general, I7's with matching chipsets 'smoke' just about anything in a similar price range. And this is coming from someone who loves AMD !!!
