    Duh Stiff Knees

I've been having BAD knee pain lately, I suspect it's from dancing, I don't know what to do! My knees feel so stiff and it hurts to squat down, does this happen to anyone else? How do you make it go away? Stretches? Supplements? OTC pain relievers?

I'm taking glucosamine now but the bottle says I need to take it 3x a day for 3 weeks to see any benefit. I'm worried I'm doing permanent damage to my knees.

You very well may be causing permanent damage. It may also be runner's knee (technical name patellofemoral syndrome). You mention it hurts when you bend; does it also hurt going downstairs? I have runner's knee which I suspect I got from stripping (all that bending! lol). Now, 6 months retired, it still hurts like a bitch if I overwork my knees (running, lunges, squats, etc).

I've found NSAIDS (aleve, advil) help alleviate the pain and swelling that come with it. You may have fluid around your knee as well and if that's the case you'll need it drained. It got so bad during my last year year dancing that it KILLED, like, my eyes would start watering, to get down to the floor and kneel or shake my ass the floor or what have you. I COULD NOT put any pressure on my left knee. Even stradling a guy during a lap dance on a COUCH hurt. You don't want to get to that point. STAY OFF YOU KNEES as much as possible.

Arnica rubbed onto it helps, as does taking it in pill form. Epsom salt baths help. Stretching helps a lot. I find if I don't move much, the pain gets worse vs. light movement like yoga or walking. Icing after work or after workouts helps.

My suggestion? Don't bend so much or crawl around the stage a lot. STAY OFF YOUR KNEES! I know this can be hard to do, but if you wan to save your knees you'll find a way to do it.

Happening to me too for the last two weeks. Just saw Doc today. She referred me to a physical therapist.

It sounds like patellofemoral pain syndrome to me also (from the pain you get squating down and stiffness.) Is your pain mainly in your knee caps and when you straighten your knees you feel them sliding around in a way that's not normal? These are also symptoms of patelofemoral syndrome. If it's really painful for a couple weeks, I'd reccomend seeing a doctor if you can. You don't have to tell the doctor you strip if you don't want, you could just say that you do alot of squats and lunges with weights for a workout and squatting and kneeling to clean the floors. If it's patellofemoral syndrome your doctor will send you to physical therapy for 1-2 months where you will build up your quadracepts especially and other leg muscles to help the bone in your knee cap track properly (stop rubbing against the other bones in your legs) and stop the pain.
Stretching and ice made my knees feel temporarily better. Taking NSAIDS (ibupropthen) like papillionlover mentioned will reduce inflamation in your knees. There are also natural anti-inflammatories in foods such as fish or fish oil and aloe juice (sold in Walmart near the stomach medicine) if you don't want to take too many pills.
By the way, I like the Osteo Bi-Flex brand of glucosamine because it also has boswellia (an herb) in it which is supposed to reduce pain.
