    ...God tells you EXACTLY what the thinks of "Sin City".

    This photo was taken by MissMynxx today as we pulled out of the Venitian. Rumor has it that this same formation has, over the years, been sighted over New Orleans, Galveston, Chicago, Pompeii, and Sodom and Gomorrah just to name a few.

    Hmm. Might be time to relocate.

    Several people have now mentioned that they don't get it. *sigh* Well, it was really obvious to us when we took it; maybe it doesn't translate so well as a pic. It looks like a giant arm and hand giving us the finger. Do you see it now..?

    ...you've been there for any longer than 5 days.

    I had family in Vegas and my folks even owned a second home there, so I used to spend a lot of time out there and got the chance to mingle with the local population a bit. It is a town filled with scam artists, hustlers and down on their luck gambling junkies. The place has no soul. Even gas stations and supermarkets cannot pass up the opportunity to take money from morons using slot machines. There are also a lot of retirees there, many of whom count their days by which casino has the cheapest food, loosest slots and mini-poker tournaments with the lowest entrance fees. A lot of the people who live and work in Vegas are transplants who claim to have moved there for more opportunities, but in reality did so in order to chase the proverbial jackpot dragon. Heck, even many of the casino employees, who you would think would know better, give a bunch of their earnings back to the house when they are off shift.

    And I'm not even talking about the strip clubs, which are a colossal waste of time and money for anyone who knows any better. The last time I spent a few nights in Vegas I didn't even bother to go out to the clubs, but rather waited until I left the City of Tourist Traps.

    Now don't get me wrong, it is a fun place to visit from time to time. But I wouldn't want to live there.

    lol

    today i wanted to see if decadence was still on despite hte hurricane and made the mistake of typing "decadence" and "hurricane isaac" into google. then this shit popped up: http://www.defendproclaimthefaith.org/blog/?p=2429

    and someone was actually defending this article on my facebook wall! ppl be crazy!
    The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
    customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
    me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
    customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

    Wow Rick; I don't know what part of town you were in, but you just described a tiny portion of this city's population, lol. Been here 10 years and love it. Most of the people I know and associate with are the same way. Other than the video poker machines in many (not all) of the convenience stores, when you're off the strip it's a lot like a lot of other western cities; progressive but conservative and full of great people. There certainly are downsides; not the least of which is that many of the scammers you talk about are in government and as such, our education and healthcare are in the toilet, but really - you gotta have some pretty weirdly tinted glasses on to see this city that way once you get away from the tourist areas.

    While dancing at the Rhino, my ex-GF lived in Anthem for five years. Anthem is a recent, upscale master-planned community well away from the Strip, out in Henderson. She couldn't wait to get the hell out of the Vegas valley. These were among her reasons:

    No significant amount of grass or green foliage;
    No river or lakes in close proximity (nearest is Mead and it's not close enough to enjoy unless you make a day trip);
    No humidity (very hard on a woman's skin);
    Cookie-cutter houses;
    Tiny yards (most recent houses have the minimum 5' sideyards so your wall is 10' from your neighbor's wall;
    Going outside between June and October makes you feel like you will spontaneously combust;
    The interior of your car is usually 200 degrees if parked in the open for any significant length of time (like grocery shopping); and
    She said she rarely saw her neighbors outside and actually only met a few on her entire street (this was a biggie because she's very social).

    Now, all that said, I love Vegas and still visit several times a year. Then again, I'm a tourist who stays on the Strip; however, when I was staying at her house, I could kinda see where she was coming from. I would feel a little claustrophobic if I couldn't hike a forest or ride my mountain bike along a river or lake.

    She was an 18-monther, lol. People who move here make it an average of 18 months, with the last of the major dropouts at the three year mark; so "18 monther" is applied to anyone moving here and leaving between 6 and 36 months. We will let you call yourself local if you make it 2 summers though, lol.

    A lifer would say:

    No significant green - um - DESERT. And there are plenty of places to go to be around it, it's not like it doesn't exist, lol. The desert has it's own beauty. It really does grow on you the longer your here.
    Day trip? It's like 20-30 minutes away, lol. Not teh greatest lake on earth, but it's not like it's hours and hours away!!
    No humidity is a good thing, lol. If it's hard on your skin, use more moisturizer. Having lived in both climates, the benefits outweigh the negatives by a long shot!!
    Cookie-cutter houses - mostly, yes. Just like most of teh west. If it bugs you, find a neighborhood that's different - there are lots. BUT - anywhere in th west - hell, most of the country these days - new developments are house farms.
    Tiny yards - same thing. Builders will always build to the densest possible allowed by zoning. Again - find a neighborhood with bigger yards if you don't like it - there are plenty of them.
    Going outside in those months is a nighttime activity, lol. SUmmer nights here are AMAZING. IT'S THE DESERT - you don't come here for the cool breezy sunshine!!
    Car interior - most telling thing that she didn't live here long. Premium spaces aren't based on distance; it's shade. You learn to park by the sun - shady spots and back of car to the sun. And buy window shades and use them. And no black car or interior, and get good tint. Vegas living 101 right there.
    Go out at night. Although I actually agree with her on this one more than the others - much of this town isnt real social until you make an effort. Especially if your neighbors know you're new to town. But having been in my house 2.5 years, I now know almost everyone on my block. You just gotta try - people here are very friendly for the most part, just not always outgoing in a private (non-tourism) setting. Again - after a few years, meeting people becomes easy.

    *shrug* - that's a fair assesment regardless. I just think Rick painted things in a very bleak manner that isn't at all how most of us see this town. Than again - the OP seems to say he might be right...

    ^ LOL!
    18-monther? You did see I wrote that she lived there for five years, right? And actually she rented a condo for about a year before that.

    The day trip comment was because you can't just drive a few blocks and float a river; you drive a half-hour each way and likely spend the day there (who goes to Mead for an hour?). Also, I don't recall seeing any grocery stores with shade in their parking lots.

    To her, making big money was worth enduring the environment.

    I love the desert landscape, primarily because I'm from South Florida and it's very different than what I grew up with. There's nothing like a morning hike at Red Rock Canyon (Calico Tanks trail)!

    Actually, I totally missed the 5 year thing somehow. It's right there in the first sentence, lol. KNow what's even weirder? I re-read your post before making mine for an indication of time. But I "glossed over" the Anthem part because I know where Anthem is and didn't need to read about Henderson, LMAO. My bad.

    You are partly right. It amazes me that more landscape designers for commercial buildings to be used by the public don't factor in more shade trees or at least something man made to provide some shade. Thus you never own a black car and you buy quality window shades. But to say you don't recall seeing any is also wring; there are actually lots of places that DID plan ahead and have shade trees all through their parking areas. When planning a day running errands, I have been known to factor that in, LOL! Yeah - yuou know you've lived in Vegas, San Diego, Phoenix, etc long enough WHEN, right? But in all seriousness - sure the Wal-Mart on Craig has 3/4 of what we need in one stop, but the complex on North 5th has everything we need spread out in 4 stores near each other, it's not as hard to get help - AND they have awesome shade trees throughout the complex and the car won't be a convection oven after we shop for 3 hours. An example of the actual thought process.
