Default Illinois charging a rape crisis center fee.

Illinois just passed a law for clubs to pay a fee/tax for rape crisis centers, as if strip clubs are tied to sex crimes.

Thoughts on this measure? How do you think if will affect dancers? Do you agree with this supposed "sin" tax?

I like the idea of funding sex crime/crisis counseling and prevention places, but don't know if strip clubs should be taxed to do it.

There is a general consensus here that taxes such as this, particularly in a state like Illinois (Left-leaning), particularly when the law was proposed by a Democrat (presumably Left-leaning), that it has more to do with increasing taxes on what is probably a fairly lowly regarded industry that once was (and maybe still is ) a cash cow. They do the same thing anytime they impose a sin-tax. They promise to use the proceeds to fund something altruistic but the money just goes into a general fund and the purpose identified for imposing the tax goes either unfunded or underfunded. Here in RI, they once claimed that instituting a state lottery would fund a great deal of the state's education needs. The lottery, which is nothing more than a tax on poor people, never served that purpose. the money went into the general fund and education costs went through the roof. Right now, they are talking about adding table games to the state slot parlor to increase revenues for all these societal problems. Its a load of crap, the money will just go into the general fund.

Politicians just pick "sin palaces" as targets that are unlikely to gain any sympathy so they can raise revenues and more or less pretend they are going to some worthwhile purpose..

I agree that the notion of linking violent sex crimes to stripclubs is ridiculous. I mean, a bar tax that funds drunk driving prevention would be one thing, but this is just attacking an industry. They are bullying money out of private business owners because these polititans know that strip clubs have no allies in the political arena or in public opinion. The sad thing is, this reinforces negative connotations associated with adult industry workers and buisness owners, which in turn makes the fight for legitimacy in our industry that much harder. Thanks to shit like this, people will continue to make the link between a legal strip club and illegal crime.

Link bars to violent crimes, where people get mean drunk and go home to violate their wives.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

Bem is on the mark. I live in Illinois, in fact in the district served by her and she is another left leaning fiscal liberal social liberal Democrat. Illinois is a fiscal cesspool and the reality is the additional money will end up in someone else's pockets (probably Mike Madigan who runs Illinois). Illinois is spiraling out of control with the spending and we need to get rid of politicians like her who only wants everyone to pay more. Btw, I used to work for the Democratic Party of Illinois and got several jobs because of it and I saw so much of this that it opened my eyes.
