    Default Exercise and calories eaten

So I have the phone app MyFitnessPal. And it has calories eaten and net calories. Basically it takes how many actual calories you eat, subtracts the amount you exercise to equal "net calories".

    Example:

I ate 1200 calories exactly. I exercised for an hour and burned 600 calories. Subtract the 600 exercised from the 1200. So I've netted 600 calories. So since my goal was 1200, I have a 600 calorie deficit.

My question is if my goal is 1200/day, but I exercise and burn some, should I eat a little more to make that deficit up, or just go with my original goal and ignore the "net" calories?

No you should not eat more. Calories in vs Calories out is how you lose weight - so you want a deficit. But what you dont want to do is over train to burn even more calories - 600cals per day is a good work out. Dont forget your body is constantly burning calories even when you are sleeping. If you burn too many calories you are gonna feel like shit because youll have no ATP (energy) for the cells throughout your body - which is extremely dangerous. Without ATP they will die. Brain cells, heart cells and kidney cells never regenerate if they die (thats why anorexics get organ failure). Your body will break down your fat and eventually muscle to provide ATP to your cells. The fat part is what you want. You want to be burning enough calories so your body uses up all the energy from your food and then has to start to break down your fat stores to get more energy. I personally couldnt function on 1200 cals/day and burning 600 in a workout, but it depends on a lot of factors - your weight, height, basal metabolic rate, etc what is right for you. I assume this app would be considering that type of info. Does it consider your goals and tell you how many cals you should burn?

It tells you how many u should eat per day to lose weight by a certain time period. So I want to lose 20 lbs by November at a rate of 2 lbs per week. So it asked lifestyle (sedentary, slightly active etc) age weight height and spat out 1200/day. So if I exercise I have to put that in as well as thus the net calories. So far since I'm working out I net negative calories. So I'm wondering if I should eat another snack Or something to make that up and hit my 1200.

Well it depends on how often you plan on burning 600 cals. If that is everyday you are definitely more than slighty active. I would consider something like going for a 20 min leisurely walk each day "slightly active". If your only going to go that hard once in a while you could leave it but if you plan to workout that hard 3-4x per week I'd adjust your status to active or one of the higher categories of exercise. Listen to your body. If you feel weak and tired, eat some veggies and chicken, tuna or eggs. That calculator is probably assuming you'd burn 200 cals as "slightly active".

you dont have a deficit at all. you burn calories, just by being alive. i reckon that you should leave apps like this alone until you have a better understanding of the three fundamentals to fitness. mindset, nutrition, exercise. and those are in order of priority

Hey thanks naughtybekke that was SOOOO helpful. Cause you know, I know nothing about BMR and RMR or thermogenesis or calories in v calories used, or how fat burns less calories than muscle, or which foods are good for you and which aren't. Gosh, I'm gonna go eat some twinkles right now cause I worked out and burned so many calories!

So forgive my sarcasm, but How else do you learn except by asking questions and researching? If youre not going to help, please don't be snarky. Cause that's not helpful at all and makes you look like a bitch. So if you'd like to help, please direct me to a reputable book, app, and/or website or type out your own answer rather than being vague about the "fundamentals", mmm'kay?

Oh and Jesse I'll take a closer look at their definition of what slightly active is.

MFP already has a deficit for weight loss built into your calorie goal, so you should try to eat those calories back and get as close as possible to your 1200 goal. Those 1200 calories make up the fuel your body needs to function on a daily basis.

I can never get there. I always have a deficit around 400, but I think that's okay. I don't have a HRM, so I'm not sure how accurate my "calories burned" are.
