    Dizzy Bandwidth/Bitrate Issues

First of all, I'm not exactly the most computer literate girl in the world so please forgive me if I'm using any incorrect terminology etc etc. Anyway, on to my issue.

I'm streaming in HD with Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2 on my MacBook Pro running Lion. Lately, while I'm streaming I watch my pathetic bitrate fluctuate between 600-100 KBPS though the program tells me I need a minimum of 856 KBPS to stream. So my video lags, drops frames, degrades quality, freezes and eventually disconnects. Im not being completely disconnected from the internet, just kicked off Streamate. Its so frustrating, especially when it happens while I'm with a customer. I've called my internet service provider and they have reset my router from their end ( and I've of course done it manually here as well), I've started using OpenDNS as a back up & my CPU is fine. I'm at a loss here- I don't know what else I can do!

My internet speed usually tests pretty legit with ping between 16-20, download between 20-25, and upload between 4-6. But when I ran the speed test tonight my download speed was at a measly 6 .... meaning it obviously fluctuates hardcore, probably all the time, even though I've never caught it so low when I run a speed test. Is this probably the reason my bitrate is fluctuating so much? If so what can I do about that? Buy a better modem/router? Change internet service providers?

Do you girls have any advice for me? I have my computer guru coming out here tomorrow to take a look at everything, but I hate to waste a night just sitting around when I *could* be virtually flipping these tricks, ya dig?! Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated.

Are you through Comcast by chance?

Your ping isn't too important, and is based strictly on the server you are running the ping test from. Distance plays a large factor in that.

But your download speed being 20-25, upload 4-6 is actually pretty good speeds. I'm currently at 35 down and 4-6 upload, so your upload is scaling better than mine.

Let me ask you, are you using a modem with wireless capabilities? If not, are you using a wireless router?

My first advice would be to stop using Wi-Fi and connect your Macbook directly to the modem and skip the router if possible. Then run a speed test. WiFi is never going to be as fast as hardlining directly to the modem with a Cat5(ethernet) cable.

Now, if your speeds are randomly fluxuating between 20-25 download, and then sitting at 6? Make sure you aren't downloading or streaming anything on your computer, phone, TV, or anything requiring your internet connection. If you're still that low, switch ISPs if they can't resolve it. You should never notice your service dip THAT much.

I watched the vid and installed the thing but it seems there was a weird issue with mine...I don't want to alarm anyone, but right after I ran it, I got an email from google saying that someone attempted to get access to my account, or an APPLICATION rather :S here is the email (removed personal info):

Someone recently tried to use an application to sign in to your Google Account, (my email addy). We prevented the sign-in attempt in case this was a hijacker trying to access your account. Please review the details of the sign-in attempt:

Another thing you might need to take in account is your area. A lot of places, the internet speed fluctuates depending on use. I live in a university town with the highest internet speed package, and I'm barely affected.

HOWEVER, when I DIDN'T have this package, my download speed would waver at night, and sometimes move at the speed of molasses because of other people with my ISP torrenting, streaming, uploading homework, etc.

    Wrong thread, I'm guessing?

If you use GMail, you can see all recent account login activity somewhere in the settings preferences, as well as the bottom of the page where it shows last login. Will display the IP address, time and date, and general geographical location of the IP address. That will at least let you know if you were infact a victim of a phishing attempt.

Thanks ladies! I think my area has a bit to do with it, as my speed fluctuates a lot during peak usage hours. I had my computer guru come out and adjust some nerdy settings on my router and computer which helped a bit ( he changed the channel my router was on or something and a few other things I dont really remember)

    BUT

I learned today from a good old fashioned google session that lower quality video is more complicated to compress ( due to the noise and general shittastic quality of the video). I had been camming with my built in FaceTime camera the whole time. I plugged in my old busted logitech 9000 and it REALLY made a difference not only in my bitrate but my framerate, too. Cleaner, higher quality video is easier for the computer to handle. I think I may have found my problem
