For the past 3 months my hair has been breaking off like crazy and I can't figure out why. I usually dye my roots only every 1-3 months and I need to do it again soon but I am scared it will make it break more. Last summer instead of doing the roots I sprayed sun-in a couple times and left it in for a while, maybe that caused a lot of damage? So now i shampoo every other day, blowdry on medium low heat only when going to work, take vitamins and have tried various hair care products nothing seems to help. Anyone else have advice? Thanks

Shampoo as little as possible, try using a dry shampoo on roots. Try not to use heat at all. Also try Emergencee (that's how it's spelled) by Nexxus, avail. in drugstores. That's all I can think of right now, if I think of more I will get back & post.
Try a search, there's lots on this topic.
    Good Luck!

A keratin treatment would help. They can be expensive. You can look for a groupon unless you have a stylist friend who can hook you up.

I have bleached the hell outta my hair over the past 4 months and I have been using hair cholesterol and other African American hair products. Also Moroccan oil helps.

I apply the No-Poo method to my hair; http://www.amazon.com/Curly-Girl-Han...7201389&sr=1-1 Even though it is aimed at Curly hair the info is applicable to straight hair aswell. Another site which taught me to examine ingredient lists is Naturally Curly; http://www.naturallycurly.com/ Again, even if you are straight haired the info on this site is invaluable.

    > No harsh detergents/foaming agents for your hair "You'd never dream of washing a good sweater with detergent. Yet most shampoos contain harsh detergents (sodium lauryl sulfate or laureth sulfate) that one also finds in dish washing liquid. They're great for pots and pans because they cut grease so effectively. Your hair, on the other hand, needs to retain some natural oils, which protect your hair and scalp. Stripping them away deprives the hair of necessary moisture and amino acids and makes it look dry and dull." - Lorraine Massey

    >No silicones except those with PEG- listed at the prefix"Most of the highly commercialized lines of hair products (Pantene, Garnier, etc) contain silicones. These ingredients can typically be recognized by their names which often end in -cone, -conol, or -xane. If at all possible avoid silicones and also waxes in your hair products. (This also includes mineral oil and castor oil.) Short term, silicones will make hair look sleeker and less frizzy, but in the long run they will coat the hair shaft of porous curly hair and seal out moisture, causing the hair to become straw like, less defined, and frizzy. Hence, silicones make quick fixes for frizz, but over time, they are truly damaging your hair."- http://www.wikihow.com/Follow-the-Cu...for-Curly-Hair

First go to the salon and get a trim.. half an inch to an inch and get a treatment at the hair salon.

Purchase either Macadamia deep repair masque or/and Moroccan Oil hair masque and use 2x a week..alternate between the two if you get both

before your blow-dry use Moroccan Oil serum.

If you can wash your hair to a minimum.. don't brush it when wet..

Diet is also important for hair growth.. lots of almonds, salmon, spinach..

This is what helped me when I fried my hair off through bleaching. good luck

For those who recommended keratin/protein.. is this something that can be used daily or once a week type deal? Thanks for the awesome advice everyone... I am going to try and incorporate all of this to see what helps. I think the problem may be deeper than just damaged hair because it's also breaking at the new growth where my roots are very dark.. I've recently cleaned up my diet so that may take a while to fix. I'm rocking 3 inch roots now because I am scared to dye it! LOL

I highly, highly recommend trying Philip Kingsley elastisizer for a scalp mask. Leave it on for at least half an hour before washing it out.
Take a multi vitamin daily, eat a lot of protein especially red meat.
I know I might get my head chewed off for this but I've been told by Philip Kingsley himself that it is very important to wash your hair daily.
I get monthly treatments at his ny clinic and have been told numerous times that oil isn't good for the hair as it clogs up the pores. (Ladies please don't kill me, I'm just following the advice of the hair god himself)
If you have a trichology clinic near you, make an appt.

There are some hair products in the ethnic section of Walgreens (Target too)..I just can't think of the name, but they seem to have lots of natural ingredients, I just read a review on the hair mask (in a jar). I will go in there tomorrow, & post the name!

Ok so I tried the Nioxin and I think it helps, however I just noticed that my hair is not breaking it's actually shedding because every single hair has the tiny white bulb at the end. I don't think any hair products will help with that unfortunately so now I just have to figure out why it is happening more than usual. It's always hairs closer to the root too, so I know for sure they are not damaged and just breaking off.

Does anyone have experience with unusual amounts of shedding (not breaking)?

Have you been under more stress lately? Also, as long as you're not seeing bald spots, you should be fine. I shed more in the summer than winter for some reason, but my hair is still thick and curly.

Well not a ton of stress but everyday I think about how unhappy I am in my lack of career situation.. quit crappy paying dayjob to go back to dancing and now getting tired of dancing but don't want to go back to crappy dayjob, Lol. But I can't figure out what I want to do, or find a better paying job. It's frustrating but I try not to dwell on it. Don't know if it's enough stress to cause the hair problem! Hope not. No bald spots.. so maybe my hair is just going through a phase.

Yes! No spots, but my hair's coming out a lot, & I am under major stress..like you said trying not to dwell
I've been wanting to try the Garnier 'Falling Hair'..it's shampoo, conditioner, & leave in spray for breakage. My hair seems to do ok w/Garnier

I understand stress, as I'm stressing myself, and it can definitely cause shedding, breakouts etc. I would try to relax as much as possible, drink more water, eat as healthy as possible and try to get more sleep.
Also, try using more natural products or products with no harmful ingredients, like sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, sodium chloride etc. Doing this will make your hair healthier and stronger. Natural ingredients are also much better for your scalp.

I would do it no more than twice a week. Hair can actually become more rough from a protein overdose. A way to test to see if your hair needs protein and/or moisture is to do a pull test. Pull on a strand of your hair, wet or dry. If it feels stretchy and elasticy, like it may snap or snap off--you need protein. If it doesn't feel so elastic, your hair will be fine with just moisture.

Keep in mind your hair's needs will change constantly and you should do this test as often as your remember before hair washing time.

Dont use bleach, if you do, go for the highlest color if you need to (HL 12). Limit heat product, after a shower apply hair oil to damp hair and leave it for almost air dye.
Interesting. What is the logic behind bleaching hair to the highest color being safer for damaged hair? I have kept my hair with a base color of light brown and dark blonde (honey) highlights to avoid excess damage. I hope you are right because I would like to go lighter.

Jumping in on the protein versus moisture:
When I squeeze the water out of my long hair if that big hunk feels like it's made out of gummy bears (squishy and rubbery, not unpleasant, just unpleasant for hair) I immediately do protein for five minutes or so then moisturize again.

The best thing to avoid is heat. You can experiment with colors as long as you don't use heat. If you do, use it sparingly.
