I always pick up this book when I'm in the store and need to regain a sense of my value. It reminds me that in order for others to recognize and respond to me as an equal, I have to demonstrate my own equality by not being a victim. If I expect others to know my worth, I damn sure better know my worth... or, I'm a victim... and I'll give my power to any Joe Schmoe who says the right things to lift me up...
In this business especially, allow NO ONE to tell you your worth. Even us! If you want to charge $400/hr, you have first be able to answer to yourself, "Is the quality of my service valued at $400/hr." If it is, and heck, if you're giving a $1000/hr service, you have to KNOW it, especially if you expect your customers to know it." Black/white/thin/fat, it doesn't matter. Understand your market. Understand your product (you). Know your value. Never compromise. Offer incentives to those clients who already understand your value. Knowing my worth gives others the opportunity to raise themselves up to a higher standard, and that makes them feel great! The value of my service comes not from sex, but from how wonderful I make my clients feel (including sex).
Knowing your worth gives you a sense of choice, not entitlement. And in that choice, there is absolute freedom. You set the price. You already know your value... and the awesome thing is, you can raise it in the eyes of your best customers. They deserve the best, after all, don't they?
