BTW, in morning light I'm pretty sure she's a pure bred boxer. Her coat is too soft to be a beagle. LOL

Well, it looks like I found her owners. My FB friend told me she belongs to people about a mile from me that rent from one of my neighbors. Apparently she was found by another family last time and they were going to adopt her, but the owners went nuts saying they wanted her back.

K really want her but they dont want all the drama that happened last time. the last owners called the sherriff. she was missing for over a week before..i guess they rent a house about a mile from you.
the people rent from Nick and Cindy
So this is the second time that we know of that this poor puppy ran away. With NO COLLAR!

    pisses me off.

^omg my mom has a dog who does that too. Her real owners live a few blocks away, but she escapes to my moms house all the time, lol. Its been going on for over a year now so now they're cool with their dog staying over for a few days at a time, lol. Ironically-- she is a boxer as well!

How is she getting out?!? Do you know what kind of people the owners are? Geeez.... she's going to run under a truck sooner rather than later. :-( People who don't take proper care of their pets make my blood pressure rise.

What the hell, how is the dog getting out over and over? Was she at least wearing a collar this time?

If the dog came back a third time to me without a collar and tag, I wouldn't give it back. They are beyond irresponsible and it's not safe for a puppy to be roaming the streets. Luckily it has light fur so it'll be easy for a car to see and stop for but either way, it's not safe.

I'm trying to think of a reasonable excuse that the owners could have but I'm coming up empty. If they have a yard, they need a fence. If they don't have a fence, they need to watch the dog while it's in the yard. If they don't have a yard, does their home not have a door? I mean, there's just no excuse.

^^^ Agreed. Unfortunately, with people like this, "not giving it back" usually just leads to them getting another poor dog to mistreat/neglect. :-( No easy solutions.

(Although I'd be tempted to 'disappear' the dog for a week or so next time, and bring her back to them spayed. You just KNOW there's going to be a litter of defenseless puppies coming out of that sweet little thing otherwise.)

I have a beautiful friendly dog that wanders. She is fully trained, I've even had one of those awful collars on her that gives her a bit of an shock if the leaves the boundary of out 1 acre property. She also gets an off the leash walk in the bush every day. Despite all of the love and care we give her she wanders. We have an elderly couple about 1 km down the road, whenever she disappers we there is a good chance we will find her at their place being fed cakes and sitting in the house by their fireplace. If she isn't there she will be at the house at the other end of the road entertaining their small children.
These people have more or less trained my dog to wander. One day she will get hit by a car and it will be their fault for making my dog welcome and comfortable at their home. In the meanwhile me the responsible dog owner is the arsehole who ends up having to tie up my now unreliable wandering dog unless I'm within 5 feet of her and starve her because she is obese from eating cakes.

The puppy may be cute but if you keep welcoming her into your home you will be encouraging the dog to wander. Kick it in the bum and send it on it's way, or lock it up in a small room and call the owners.

^^^ With all due respect, it's the OWNER'S responsibility to keep a pet contained, well-exercised, and SAFE.

You are NOT a responsible pet owner if you let her wander. Sorry, but it is not the other people's fault that you let your dog wander. I let her into my home to keep her safe from getting hit by a car, coyotes that pack in the night, and other unknown things that can happen to a 4 month old puppy.

I had a plan to get her to another family last night, but the original owners showed up again to bring her home. And no still NO collar. The mom says "guess I'll have to go buy a chain to put the little bitch on" YA THINK?!!! makes me SO mad. I'm sure she'll be back in a day or so.

WTF? It's other people's fault you don't keep an eye on your dog? It's YOUR fault the dog wanders off, not someone else trying to be kind to your dog when it appears on the front door.

You missed the bit where I said i now have to keep my dog tied up pretty much permanantly unless i'm 5 feet away. I never used to have to. All they have to do is ring me the numeber is on her tage, and her coat, and she is microchipped and registered, but no, they take her INSIDE their house, feed her and ring me later that night when they have finished having fun with her.
How do you train a dog? You reward her with treats and praise when they do what you want them to do. Yes they have trained my dog to wander.

Yes i AM a responsible pet owner, unfortunately becuase of irresponsible being "kind" instead of ringing me to collect her my dog has to suffer now. She is tied up 24/7. So no she won't get hit by car as long as i don't untie her.
If you don't have all the information don't judge.
What i was saying is that by being "nice" to the dog you are rewarding it's behaviour and making it harder for the owners. I was hoping my story would give some real life example of how one shouldn't judge without getting all the facts.
Howver it is much easier and requires less thought process to sit back and hang shit.

No, they have not trained your dog to wander.

Is the boundary to your property a secure chain linked fence? If there's no secure enclosed fence, that's why the dog is wandering. As much as a dog is trained, you can't teach it what a property line is. It has legs and a nose and will explore if the opportunity arises. And there's nothing wrong with having your dog tied to a dog run. You've got an acre of property. Just hang a wire between two far apart trees that have a clearing between them and using two D-clips and another wire, secure the dog to the run. Now your dog will be able to explore within the safety of your property and you can be as many feet away as you want. All parties win.

Oh for fucks sake i'm sorry if i spoilt theis little bitch party by offering some information instead of patting the original OP on the back.
By being "kind" she may be unintentionally making things worse for the cute puppy. i added my own story as an example. Since everyone has decided to give me grief I shall give you ALL the information about my 9 year old dog that has developed a wandering habit in the last 2 years. Yes. I have fences around my entire 1 acre property installed at significant expense to keep my dog restrained. It is a big dog. Anything that is near the fence she will use to bounce off and jump over. in any case i never had a proble, she was happy to stay within our boundary even with the gate open up to 2 year ago. unfortunately our neighbor has dog which is compl, etely undisciplined, it is always wandering, a few times their dog came into our yard and our dog went off with it. the other people in our neighborhood the started to reard my dog for wandering. feeding it, playing with it until i would drive around and eventua;lly find my dog.

I have had a professional trainer come up at great expense to fix my do and retrain it.
MY PROFESSIONAL DOG TRAINER as opposed to random dog lovers on the internet explained to me that she has been trained to wander. A dog will go where there is food and fun. the only way i can stop her is with phsyical barriers (the fence has been proiven beatable) so I bought at considerable expense an electronic barrier which is a wire and a dog collar. the dog collar emits a sound when she comes close to the boundary wire and will give her an electric shock when she hangs about too long. I hate this collar. As it turns out she is willing to suffer the electic shock for yummy treats and fun times. As an extra problem once she has gone out she won't come back in because- she gets a shock. I have gone through 3 of these units because they are poorly made Again at considerable cost.
I have spent over $10,000 on fences, trainers and electronic devices for this dog.
Don't you dare call me irresponsible because I have to now tie her up !
On top of that i take my dog on a leash to a bush area where she can run freely off the leash. I do this every day for 1 hour. I don't work. Now that i can't trust her to satay in our yard despite all the barriers and have to tie her up I also let her off for 30 minute periods several times a day making sure to give her lots of attentio and doggy treats during that time.
My dog is extremely lucky that i have both the time and money to devote half my life to entertaining her and keeping her safe.

I will listen to an expert dog trainer above random internet users. I am NOT irresponsible. SO FUCK OFF WITH YOUR JUDGEMMNTS How aboutr some help eh? I am more than willing to try your knowlegdeable methods to keep my dog in line. Please contact me and give me your methods to beat my problem, i hate having my dog tied up and would love any strategies or products that you have to offer.

Sorry doubled up. I wasn't calling the Op a bitch, the start doesn't read well if you read it fast!
I offered my information as a possible aspect and to warn the Op she may be contributing to a proble. MAY BE.

As it is if the dog is collarless, and still collarless the Op is probably doing the right thing for the dog. Wish i just shut up and waited for more info instead of being honest and opening mysfelf to such horrible judgemental comments from people. theought this was supportive open minded place. Woo, was i wrong!

How about closing the gate and getting a taller fence so the dog can't use tree stumps and the like to jump over it?

The start doesn't read well, the middle doesn't read well, and the end doesn't read well. You offered your story and opinion and we are all here in this "little bitch party" as you so charmingly put it, offering you our opinions in return. That is the way things go on the interwebz. Your ridiculously defensive and rude posts are about as helpful here as your expert dog trainer was at stopping your pooch from wandering.

Dude. The owners of the dog that wanders over to my mom's property have tried everything and the dog still wanders. They have five ft cattle fencing around their entire 5 acre (mom lives in the country) premisis and the dog still somehow gets out. They've put her in a kennel, tied her around something (which she ended up bringing the chain she was on *with* her). All of this slows things down but it doesn't permanently stop this dog from wandering.
Who knows exactly why dogs wander, but i'm sure it doesn't help the cause when they know that there is food and affection waiting for them at some other house.

On the same note, now that I think of it... I don't know if anyone here has ever lived in an area where there are ridiculous quantities of stray/ferral/boonie dogs, but the same rule applies. No matter how sweet, innocent, or young they are, and even in situations where the dog is in poor physical condition and starving people are encouraged to never EVAR touch/pet/play/interact with them or feed them. Even making eye contact with them is a no-no. Why?! Well you would think it is because of diseases they might carry or something of the sort but-nope! It's because they associate food/affection as an indication that you want them. They'll follow you, wait foryou, show up at your house every day- all over a little pat or one single treat. I even had one stray follow me from when I moved from Maite to Tumon because we would give him our scraps. Food/affection really does = home for dogs.
