    Question Sugar cravings

So I'm trying to seriously cut back on sucrose (table sugar). Problem is I get these intense cravings for it. I've tried eating some fruit-didn't help. drank water-still want sugar. Like brownies. Or cupcakes. Or ice cream. Or a chocolate bar. Yummmmmm....

So what can I do to help tame these horrid cravings? Other than sitting here drooling thinking about all the yumminess?

If you have cut out sugar then you will just have to ride out the cravings which took us several weeks.

If you are Serious Serious about cutting out sugar then....... http://www.howmuchsugar.com/ This book (and now his second book) has turned my and my husbands views of food, the food industry, and several health foundations' stances on its head. "David Gillespie, author of The Sweet Poison Quit Plan (Penguin, 2010) puts it simply: sugar is poison. He cites Princeton University research that showed sugar can be as addictive to lab rats as heroin or crack cocaine. Gillespie lost 40kg when he gave sugar the boot, and says while artificial sweeteners are an excellent tool for getting through the withdrawal period, they don't offer a long-term solution.".....http://www.bodyandsoul.com.au/food+d...ddiction,12881

I also found this online http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Through-Sugar-Withdrawal although I would be very cautious of Stevia (read the above mentioned book) and Xylitol is very very toxic to dogs so we don't keep it in the house. Also fruit/vege juices are OUT. Make life easier for you and read the book. It helped us.

It'll be a while til the library can get me the book. Why is stevia so bad?

you can try splenda's new natural sweetener called nectresse. i SWEAR by it because it tastes JUST like sugar and it's 0 calories. did i mention it's all natural? like you can try some plain yogurt, put that in there w/ some fruit. OR you can make cookies or muffins or whatever from scratch using nectresse instead of sugar

The best thing that you can do to reduce those distracting cravings for sweets and sugar is to eat less SALT, less crunchy foods (like potato chips), less hard baked flour products (like bread and cookies, although very sweet), and less meat. All have VERY contracting effects on the body and intestines, making it nearly impossible not to crave sugar and alcohol. This is why bars serve salty mixed nuts to patrons, it makes them instantly crave more alcohol (sugar). If bars served slices of pineapple to every customer, they would see a severe drop in liquor sales. Actually every single meal you can eat at any restaurant anywhere has WAY too much salt in it, it keeps you sucking down wine, booze, and soda...which they make huge profits on. More than the food.

Also, if you drink, hard liquor specifically is so expansive to your body that the result is extreme contraction when you sober up...also making sugar cravings maddening! This is something very few people know about. Sugar is what your body craves when you are too contracted. To fight this further in your day to day, load up on salads w/ oil and vinegar (all 3 are expansive), non tropical fruits (trust me), whole grains like rice, black unsweetened coffee, and tea. Any and ALL fake sugar, splenda, nutra sweet etc, has a paralyzing effect on the intestines and will absolutely, without a doubt, make you want more sugar. They are refined chemicals which are very very expansive (like coke and vodka) and will most definitely result in a contracted state...and then you'll eat 5,000 oreos as a result. I know it might not make sense immediately but this I know to be true.

I pretty much never drink alcohol and the only meat I regularly eat is seafood that has low levels of toxins. I have a list of which are better than others and use it ever time I shop for food

Yeah, real scary how ummm...tampered with meat is today...never mind occurances like mercury in tuna and salmon. As far as all meat goes, the very best thing to eat is white meat fish like haddock, cod, scrod, etc.

cold turkey on the refined sugars is the only thing i can do. if i start to eat any i start to crave more and a week later im back off the wagon. happened upon return the US and i gained some weight back and now i am back to 0 refined sugars.

ive read a lot of stuff abotu grains and gluten and sugars bringing out powerful physical addictions in some people (also read that gluten intolerance can lead to these types of addictions / cravings). i think im one of these people. I cannot have "just a little bit of cookies" in my diet on a daily basis, it very quickly turns into a lot of cookies and less fruits and veggies. The primal/paleo thing and not drinking (which is part of it ) is the ONLY thing that has worked for me within the past 2 years. i have PCOS and when i include that shit in my diet it does horrible things to my body and mind and makes me only want to eat junk and sit on my ass and eat more junk.

stop eating the sugars. grab an apple or a peach instead. peaches are awesome btw. so sweet and good and juicy and after 1 (or 2 if i am in a gluttonous mood) my "I NEED SOMETHIGN SWEET NOW" craving is totally satisfied. im obsessed. you dont need to be deprived of things that taste sweet and awesome, you juust have to switch from the sugary crap with mysterious contents to things that are succulent and juicy and fabulous. natures candy totally makes a bitchin desert!

i think sugar addiction for me is similar but worse than cigarettes. i have successfully quit smoking before (2 yrs) but i smoke again. the only thing that worked then was cold turkey. weaning myself off cigarettes was a failure. but i can be much more moderate about my cigs than sugars. I think it must just be my personality type .

also on a tangent, tempest and i are gonna have paleo taco night tonight .

me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

i think the best way to get rid of sugar is different for efveryone. like i said, for me the ONLY thing that works is to just stay the fuck away. but some ppl seem to do ok weaning themselves off of it.

that being said, i guess the first two weeks of ramadan i stopped drinking and cutting out obvious junk food only (i.e. no cookies but i would eat whole wheat bread). this was sort of helping and then last two weeks i completely cut out the refined sugars. i would sometimes have something with bread in it after ramadan, and as a result i gained some weight back and the nafter coming backto the US managed to go off the wagon a bit. Im back on now though and feeling good. so maybe the two weeks of not doing junk food before going sans grains helped?

i do think sugar addiction is very real though. people say its all hippy nonsense, but if sugar addiction was not real, we would not have so many obese people. regardless of what the fat people say about being ok wiht how they look or being happy to have "curves", nobody who is significantly overweight looks in the mirror and TRULY believes that their body is acceptable. They do not feel as healthy and they certainly dont look healthy. they might kid themselves and society might tell them it is ok, but i refuse to believe they are actually happy or ok with it. If sugar wasnt addicting, it would not be an issue for them to just say "eh ok no problem will usually eat healthy no big deal". but, obviously, it is a big deal. if it wasnt a big deal to not eat sugar, they would not be fat.

I read about a study that suggested that sweet smells can satisfy a craving as much as sweet taste. I found that it works for me - if I want something sweet, I burn some vanilla oil or spritz some cotton candy spray, and visualise exactly how it would taste. I find that I want it less after that...

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, a friend of mine visualizes how she feels AFTER she has eaten the sweet thing - nasty aftertaste, thirst, etc....then thinks about how she wants to look, and imagines herself morphing into a giant fat blob...puts her off the candy!!

And on a more practical note - don't keep it in the house!! That is step ONE - most cravings pass fairly quickly, so keep sugar and sweets away from easy reach. When you get a craving, don't try to use quasi-sweet foods - they won't help! Do something else entirely, like work out for five minutes, take a walk, clean the bathroom, whatever. Chances are by the time you are done, that craving will have passed, and then you just have to deal with the next one.

Unfortunately, at this point you're going to have to stop buying it altogether and ride it out.

I don't buy it. Somehow it just finds its way into the shopping cart...via a five year olds hands lol.

But really I'm doing well. I made cupcakes for aradias birthday (healthy cupcakes From scratch, minus the frosting). Other than that, I've had maybe three bites of sweets since Saturday. I havemt bought amy other sweets other than that, so This is an improvement for me.

I do peanut butter (all natural, of course). Lots of calories, but good for you! I LOVE doughnuts, but I have to constantly talk myself into a piece of toast with a tablespoon of peanut butter instead.

^^no no terrible advice. most peanut butter (even the natural kind) has added sugar and has tons of fat. and peanuts dont even necessarily contain the good kind of fat.

and its like 180 calories for 2 tablespoons. not good for weight loss.

and if she is trying to avoid sugar, it is also best to avoid bread.

if you are going to substitute something for sugar cravings, for the love of god dont do peanut butter and bread. it might not be as bad as cake, but its certainly not good.

For me the only way I can fight sugar cravings is to have none at all. If I have the tiniest bit I want more and find it hard to stop. I find looking at motivational pics of the body I want helps best with fighting cravings. I read this article the other day about fitness models and their secret to staying fit.... It was they don't cheat. Ever. No cheat days or meals just healthy eating and hard training. Now don't get me wrong im not that disciplined but when I think about determination and results I can fight a craving 3/5 times. Which is better than giving in every time.

True that. I'm on a bulk right now, and peanut butter is one of the foods that you absolutely mainline because it's so high calorie. But the 100% peanuts kind, otherwise all that sugar is just going to make you fat, which sort of defeats the purpose.

Honestly eating white bread is worse for you than just eating the same amount of sugar, in terms of glycemic index. If you want to cut out sugar, DO NOT EAT BREAD!

its true, because if you eat healthy all the time and never cheat, your body will get used to it and kill the cravings and you willg et an awesome body.

eating sugar causes a hormonal reaction in your body which is basically a chemical cascade that starts the fat storing process... which is why you cheat once and then you can't stop craving it. that ONE cheat released all those fat storing hormones, and then the hormones make you crave more so they can store more.

I agree that moderation is just not an option for me. If I have 1 cookie, I will undoubtedly eat the entire box. And it's really only carbs that I have a problem with---which is partly due to the medication I'm on. It makes me crave carbs something fierce.

My biggest problem is that after I eat a salty or savory meal, I HAVE to follow it with something sweet. In that regard, I've found that gum helps a lot, esp in dessert-like flavors like caramel apple pie, key lime, etc.

If you can just white-knuckle it through the first couple weeks of cutting out sugar/simple carbs, the cravings will lessen and it will get easier.

And now I need to take my own advice and put down the half eaten box of graham crackers that I'm chomping...
