Default Is a direct connection better than wireless?

    Hi Girls,

Sure this has been covered but I've looked and couldn't find a direct answer to the question.

My wireless and wired internet connections show the same when I run a speed test - same upload speed of 4.24 mbps and download of 52mbps. Is there a benefit to plugging my laptop into the modem directly if the speed test shows the same either way?

Also, if I had a higher upload speed would it benefit my position on sm?

Currently when I log in I'm anywhere from the middle of the first page to the bottom depending on who else is on. I'm running an i5 processor 2.50GHz 640gb harddrive. Been thinking of springing for an i7 but not sure its worth it at the moment.

Ethernet is typically gigabit and wireless is quite a bit slower. Rated at 300 Megabits per second which is the theoretical maximum speed (actually is quite a bit slower). I'd say go with the Ethernet and turn off the wireless if you don't need it. Wired is far more reliable. less drop outs etc.

At my old apartment, my wired speed was pretty much the same as my wireless speed but wireless was less reliable. I didn't have it cut out on me often but it did a couple times---and I don't think I ever had problems with a dropped connection when I was wired. My upload speed was a little higher (~7mpbs) but my download was lower, around 40mbps.

Where I live now though, wireless sucks and I definitely notice a difference, both in speed tests and even just watching streaming video.

I would say go with wired just to be safe but if you want to cam from a room one night where you have to use wifi, it prob won't be a big deal.

Wired is more reliable because you have a direct connection and less chances of interference. Wireless can be iffy if you have a poor router or it just has spotty performance once in a while. The speed may be faster through wired if you're connected directly to the modem just because youre taking out the middleman router.

If you want to stick with the wireless you should get a reliable router and a wireless signal booster if you're worried about the range of signal. Also, a faster upload/download speed is supposedly said to help on SM, less lag for the customers and just all around easier and possibly better placement because you won't have dropped frames/more lag if you use the HD encoder.

My laptop is connected via ethernet and I honestly have more problems staying connected via ethernet instead of wirelessly... I also just helped a new cammodel set up her encoder and whatnot, and when running speed tests we realized that the ethernet cable was making her internet SLOWER by a LOT. We're talking her upload speed was like, .26 and when unplugged she went back up to 2.0+. It was crazy. I recommend trying both out, but if you have unreliable wireless internet, you may be better off with a cable regardless...

Reliability is the main thing, and speed CAN be affected.

It drives me nuts - because of how my house is built, I had to get a 50ft CAT cable, and a bunch of those stick-on wire holders, and run the cable accross basically the entire top floor of my house, through doorways and everything. But it is better for working. Sigh
