    Default Up-dos for hair

Just wondering if anyone is a wizz with hair styling? I have a very formal event coming up and need to wear my hair up/mostly up. There's a lot of hairstyle-picture-sites but not many how tos.

My hair is long, thick, curly... not like ringlets but more than a lame wave.

This is closest pic I can find to give an idea.

Most sites just "pin up" bits of hair, but what with? Just a fuckton of bobby pins? I've always had trouble trying this as my hair's so thick and heavy (but I've never tried too hard, I'm too low maintanance).

Does anyone know a good site or have any ideas? I want to show off the curls, I like volume (can't avoid it really) and prefer natural-friendly styles (don't want to do anything too intricate cos I'd get annoyed when it just falls out of place).

Here's a few pics I like just not sure how to do

    Thanks!

Hmm, I have similar hair...I'd get a pretty jeweled headband and then just try to elegantly pin up the back with bobby pins or embellished clips. It takes TONS of bobby pins to hold my hair up so I know how you feel, any little pieces that escape will look fine though. Or maybe do a half up half down with a nice jeweled clip at the back and curl the ends a bit, use serum to smooth out the frizz and maybe hairspray up top and tease a bit to get it to look more formal.

Sometimes I use and elastic or two and then pin hair in place to cover the elastic. Put hairspray on your pins and let them dry before you use them and they'll stick in place way better! I also adore fibre putty for keeping my shit together. It's the only way I survive the rainy season!

Also, those hair clips that look like paper clips, if anyone knows what I mean. I have no idea what they're called.

Youtube has some pretty good up do hair tutorials.

For updos, I just use some smoothing gel (I have wavy hair) twist it up on top of my head, let some tendrils fall down I put a wooden stick thru it, or for a dressier look I have painted sticks w/gem stones

Get a bun ring/doughnut ring from boots. It makes gorgeous buns but also you can use it as a base for pinning the hair. It's a couple of quid and is a lifesaver.

I like to make my hair wavy, put it into a high ponytail, then thread the end of my ponytail through the ring and pin hair around the bun ring... Looks good messy or neat. Then loosen a few tiny pieces at the front (being careful not to accidentally revisit the 90s) unless you're going for the sleek look... But your hair sounds like mine and that never seems to work out for me. Then maybe a jewelled pin into the bun or beside it.
