Default Filing late taxes for 2011 (PSO income) advice needed

I haven't filed taxes in 16 years, long story. But in a nutshell, I either didin't make enough, worked under the table, was a student, or was on public assistance. Last year I made $28,423 (NF) though part of last year I did receive county aid (I'm a single parent). I work as a PSO. I'm nervous about how much money I will owe. I will file head of household with one dependent. I am more prepared to write off certain expenses this year (2012), but last year, with the exception of DSL that I may or may not be able to write off, I'm on the hook for the full amount. Also, I am not counting rent, or partial rent for fear of calling attention to myself. I reside in California.

I am going to H&R block Monday, the last day for filing the late extension. I have no idea what I will owe, $300 or 3k. My rent is very high (1400 monthly) so I barely keep a roof over my head, though I am expanding my PSO business (recordings, other sites to work from, mp3's) I also plan on either downsizing to a one bedroom, or, will try renting out my spare bedroom to traveller's through airbnb.com

Any advice about taxes, or potentially what I may be able write off in the future? I assume: computer, microphone, phone, website design, hosting. Curious to hear from other PSO's, or other knowledgable folks.

    Thanks in advance

i would not use a chain tax service - i would seek out a CPA - places like hr are very hit and miss how knowledgeable the person is - and they deal with more cookie cutter situations - people with W_2's you should have a better chance of finding some deductions with a CPA or a least a better understanding of an person who works for them self - just my 2

Unless you got a crapload of taxable public aid money, (I don't know what the tax rules are on county aid), I seriously doubt you will wind up owing an enormous amount of money. You've got a child, so you'll be able to claim head of household, plus, even the standard deduction will reduce your taxable income *way* down. I wouldn't stress too much, I think you'll find it to be a manageable amount, and the IRS will work w/you on a payment schedule, if necessary.

Unfortunately tomorrow is the deadline for filing late, and I have no deductions. This year I will, and definitely next year I plan on expanding my business. So I do plan on seeking out a CPA! But it is what is is, H & R, will hopefully be able to help me work out a payment plan with the IRS.

Thanks Little Miss!, yeah I guess I'm stressing. County aid and child support aren't taxable, so I won't even mention it to the tax folks. It's enough that I have the 28k to claim (NF) and trying to figure out a nice way to say PSO, phone sex (actress) as my business. In case I get queries, I'll just say customer service rep, or something. I'll report back tomorrow. But I did hear social security tax is double in California if you're self employed. wish me luck

Everyone has dedudctions, you just need help finding them. Keep in mind H&R Block, etc are temporary employees, so it is a crap shoot if you get a pro (unlikely) or a physEd instructor. A CPA will have heard your story and others much worse many times before. I highly recommend my tax professional who is on here as MSTakeU. Sexworker friendly, creative and 'friendly persistent' enough to not only get the problem fixed but will also keep you from repeating. Her email is [email protected]

UPDATE: Just got back from H & R Block. I did luck out, I think, with the gal I got. She did give me valuable advice as well, regarding needing to obtain a business license, health insurance. We figured out some deductions as well, which helped a bit. I decided, since my degree is in English and I'm moving in the direction of working freelance as a writer, (having done so in the past) I listed my occupation as writer (NF Entertainment LLC, as my payment processor) In the future I may elaborate on that. I'd like to find a CPA from this point forward. Luckily, b/c I filed head of household, I owe $1,333, plus my $275 to H & R Block. I will do a payment plan through the IRS for the $970 I still owe.
