    Default ID Scanning

This was a first for me this week. I went to several clubs this week and one of them took my licence ID and scanned it into a machine - I never had that done before. I suppose they had some hassle with underage drinking and they needed some protection - but now I am worried that they have it and can use it for some not so licit reasons - I am just hoping that I don't get a Xmas card from them! Has anyone seen this before - could it be a new trend in SC security?

I've never seen it at a strip club but have seen them at bars and dance clubs. It doesn't necessarily scan in your info, it checks that it is an active license and not some fake id. That's usually all it does. I know a lot of bars either use the scan thing or a light. It's to prevent underage drinking. I wouldn't worry about receiving a Xmas card from them.

My club does that. They also check IDS and do fingerprints when a guy is using a credit card. It prevents chargebacks.

My county is semi-dry, & bars get around this by calling themselves 'Members Only Clubs' where you go in the first time, give them your ID & they scan it into a machine. As I understand it, this machine not only checks that the ID is legitimate but also lists you in their registry; Congratulations, you're now a Member of the Club! All they need is the one scan.

Checking fingerprints seems extreme - but it the card is stolen then I guess they give that to the cops to help get them

Do you know how long they keep the information and what do they do with it?

Pure Gold in Cary does this and gives you a receipt that has your name on it. Capital Cabaret in Raleigh did this when it first opened couple of years ago but dropped it after a few months. While I'm not a big fan of it I don't see that much harm in it. I've read on SW that some people will walk out if clubs do this so it might hurt business.

In visits to probably something close to 200 clubs over the past decade, I have only seen it twice. In each case, it was my first and last visit to the club.

For the past several years, I have used my passport as my ID for clubs instead of my license. Not only does it not have my home address on it, but my birth state is not the same as the one in which I currently reside.

I'll be damned if I'm going to have records of my club visits stored in someone's database and I am sure that there are plenty of other guys who feel the same way, particularly those of us who are married, are employed in reputation-sensitive businesses or both.

I'm personally only aware of 4 midwest "membership" type clubs (2 have since gone out of business) that scanned driver license into computer, and would give you a membership card with your picture on it. I say "would give", because license scan is a non-negotiable item for me. On a prominent club review site, I've read reviews of some "normal" (eg- non-member type) stripclubs starting to do the license scan. In this information age, I prefer to keep my info off as many databases as possible, and fork over only on a "need to know" basis.

For travel/TSA related ID, I prefer passport over driver license, as it is easier to pull out of shirt pocket, vs fumbling around to pull license out of wallet. Still, both forms have barcode where info can be scanned into database. Some hotels take your drivers license to scan barcode, mainly saving clerk the effort of typing registration info in himself. Some of the smaller car rental companies require making a copy of your drivers license (and keeping it in your file)as a condition of rental. Good thread topic, drewburner.

The only club that does this consistently is a Spearmint Rhino that I go to occasionally. I found that if the door guy starts to recognize you, then he won't do it anymore. But it seems that every time I go there is a new person at the front, and they want to run your DL thru to god-knows-where. I tend to avoid this club (or put it very low on my list) because of this.
