Default Batten down the hatches - The Frankenstorm is comming

WASHINGTON (AP) — An unusual nasty mix of a hurricane and a winter storm that forecasters are now calling "Frankenstorm" is likely to blast most of the East Coast next week, focusing the worst of its weather mayhem around New York City and New Jersey.
Government forecasters on Thursday upped the odds of a major weather mess, now saying there's a 90 percent chance that the East will get steady gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Halloween on Wednesday.

I have to say...for most of my life Ive been hearing people say they could neveeer live in FL cause of the hurricaines... and yet these past couple of years, theyve been sweeping past us and heading up north. Aye!!!!

The caribbean got hit *very* hard though...very scary. No one expected it would be as bad as it was....thankful it didnt come this way because I am SO not prepared for a hurricaine. Every single year I think to myself, hrm..I should get a hurricaine supply kit. So far I have 2 scented candles and a battery lantern. Not even close to ready

Hope my northern friends are a lot more prepared for this...I have the feeling you all are going to *have* to be.

I'm all stocked up on dry food, water, batteries etc, and ready to go! I'm in NYC and I think it's meant to start hitting us Sunday night, so I'm going to hole up indoors with a good book and hope we don't lose power for too long *fingers crossed*

BlkSharpie I think you're right. In recent years things have been shifting weather-wise and the northern folks are starting to get a taste. I'm in upstate NY and while I'm more inland, the effects of this storm are expected to wreak havoc in the way of power outages, snow, flooding around here. We have a generator, thank god, but a few years ago, there was an unexpected snow storm in early October and many were without power for a few weeks. It sucked so bad. The simple, little things we often take for granted mean a hell of a lot when we have to go without, even for a brief time.

    Please stay safe everyone.

Stocked up on canned stuff, water, batteries and fruit that doesn't need to be refrigerated. I'm more concerned for my animals. :-( I hope the power doesn't go out for too long for their little cold blooded butts. Stocking up on heat packs for them.

I'm in Northern PA, everyone is preparing for outages, we got what we could to last us a week, so far it's only been a little windy. I'm hoping we don't get it. I actually hope NY or any of the other states don't get hit too hard. We don't have a generator, even though we should, especially since we have a 1 year old to keep safe and warm. We have plans to head to my sisters if we lose power, she has a fire place and a generator. My husband parents live close to us and don't think we will get anything so they didn't prepare at all and they will be joining us at my sisters if we lose power.

I hope everyone else keeps safe and warm.

I wish I lived in FL now! I'm thinking we will be sooner than we expect. I'll take the hurricane versus a combo of hurricane and winter storm. >.< Nothing is worse than freezing rain and snow.

Not much going on here yet either, Manhattan has some flooding though (I'm in Brooklyn). It's a bit windy outside with some light rain, but we still have our kitchen window open and all our power etc. I'm MAJORLY craving some Dunkin coffee but I bet the one near me is closed, so my roommate and I are considering checking out the bar on the corner of our street for an hour. They're saying around 4pm is when it's supposed to really get bad, and by 5pm we'll be in the middle of it. I'm doing everything I can think of online, so that if/when the power goes out, I can just relax with a candle and a book.

    Stay safe everyone!!

DAMN, that's a LOT of flooding in Manhattan, the southern boros, and the Jersey coast is ridiculous! The bottom 1/3 of Manhattan is in the dark and 3/4 of a million people in NYC are in the dark and cold with no heat. The subways are flooded and may not work for a week! No flights until Wednesday at best. Ive never seen it like this. There flooding up to Avenue C and all through the Battery. Crazy. People have to e plucked off their roofs in Middlesex, Monmouth.
