Yes, I'm doing it! I will do one more academic year here in NOLA and then transfer into a (surprisingly affordable) CUNY program in the field of my dreams. Its a major thats almost impossible to find outside of a private institution and definitely impossible to find for under $15,000/yr so I'm pretty set on this.
So, while I'm pretty sure no matter what I do in NYC will earn me more cash than anything here in New Orleans, I'm still very curious about what work opportunities are there, and how things have been lately.
The industries I've already found:
- Fetish (Dungeon/Parties/Modeling) ...( I have a great group of NYC friends who work in a few of the "top spots" so that's definitely a go)
- Erotic Photo/Video Shoots (Already know an awesome photographer, check!)
- Secretive sex clubs/"members only" strip clubs (...I've heard rumors, but would like to know more)
- Freestyling SD's!
- Gown Clubs - ( Its my understanding that they do not require any form of pole dancing, is this true?)
- Brick-and-Mortar Webcam Studios ... also something I'd like to know more specifics on, anyone ever worked at one?
- Upscale Erotic Massage Spas (....I've found a place online called "Jasmin Spa NYC", but I can't find out if its actually real...)
- Webcam Modeling/Content Selling/Phone Sex - I can take this anywhere, and I've heard that the whole city practically has highspeed wifi (so no need to pay an Internet bill) - is this true?
- Very upscale escort agencies...I am indy but I think with a big move to a new city I might be better off agency for awhile. Does anyone know anything about "Club Ill Repute", "Posh-Models", or "Icon Companions" ? For the rates they have listed, a 50% cut would still be more than I can charge in NOLA!
Are there any uniquely NYC adult industry business opportunities I may be missing?
For those of you who have worked in any of these fields, how has it been? Slow? Steady? Recession proof! Is it as seasonal as things are in NOLA? I'm sure it'll be quite competitive no doubt...
As for the general move itself, here's what I've guesstimated for my anticipated cost of living:
- Rent (In Brooklyn, not Manhattan): I should be able to get a really nice 1bdrm or a very spacious studio with amenities for around $2,500/mo.
- Internet: $100-$150/mo for high speed internet with a landline
- Transportation: $105/mo Unlimited Express Subway Pass
- Gas/Heat (I'm assuming this is Electricity?) : Up to $150/mo depending on season, but possibly included in rent
- Food: $300? (I'm finding this so hard to guesstimate because so many people in this city tell me they don't cook! I love to cook, and actually some favorite foods online in bulk at a low price, but I probably will still eat out more than usual for socializing)
- Gym/Laundry/Security: Amenities included within my building
- Cell Phone: Mommy still gets me any phone and unlimited plan I want as long as I keep high grades - yay!
- Health/Vision/Dental: Mommy and Daddy until I'm 26....again, yay!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL: $3,205/month in Basic Living Expenses....If I can make that here in NOLA back when I was just doing bodyrubs during the "slow" summer, I can make that with multiple streams of income in NYC...right?
I figure that if I need about $3,200 to cover my living, I need to actually make over $6,400 each month to live comfortably (ie, not gig-to-gig, paycheck-to-paycheck), so my move will be based off of my expectations of making reasonably $6,400/mo, not if I can make $3,200/mo.
Possible Other Expenses:
- I may opt for a ZipCar membership, seeing as I won't be bringing my own car
- I could possibly pay my tuition (about $15,000 for the year) on a monthly basis instead of 2 lump sums, thus making it a regular bill
- Some additional tennant fee to cover amenities in my building, not included in normal rent (and not mentioned until right at lease signing, I'm sure)
- I'll probably want to opt for renters insurance
- No idea if or how often I might utilize taxis or ferries
- Warmer clothes...not a monthly purchase but still, spring-weather clothes are easily found for cheap, adequate winter clothes are pricey just for warmth and even more expensive for warmth + style
- P.O. Box for my fans to send me goodies
- Cable TV?
- and uh, Mommy and Daddy might not be too crazy about this idea...no matter how many A's I have
....am I forgetting anything?
Oh! One more thing, how soon in advance should I put myself on the waiting lists or start inquiring for vacancies at these apartment buildings? If anyone has any specific areas or buildings they recommend, that would be fantastic!
Worst case scenario I could always look into the student apartments, but I feel that living in a glorified dorm would cross several streams of income off my list.
I understand some of the industries I inquired about are a bit more hush-hush than others, so I gladly welcome and very much appreciate PM's!
Thank You!
