Default Apartment got broken into while I was at work - 2 grand gone :(

I worked several nights in a row and go to school too so I had no time to make it to the bank and my money kept adding up. I had over $2000 hidden at my apartment and when I got home from work at 3am I saw that the bolt on my door had been broken off and all my money had been taken (even the $5 bill I had on my end table as well as a pack of cigarettes). I didn't even bother to call the police because I live in Detroit and Detroit police don't care. It just really sucks to have such a large sum taken from me and to know that someone was in my apartment while I was gone and I don't know who I have a feeling of who it could be, seeing as how I've lived in the apartment complex for 15 months and nothing has ever happened but a woman and her boyfriend (they are both crackheads) just moved in a couple weeks ago and now this happens; they were very suspicious and the next morning the woman was on my floor even though she lives two floors down, and when she saw me she said "hi" and went back downstairs. I won't be making the mistake of keeping large sums of money at home anymore and I am moving ASAP to a suburb. I live by myself and no longer feel safe. Has anything like this happened to anyone else? I'm trying to push passed this, it just sucks because the two grand was almost half of what I owe my university If anyone has words of encouragement, PLEASE send them my way, I need whatever advice anyone has to pick my mood up.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. That's so horrible. I'd still report it to both the police and the landlord just so there's a trail in case this happens to you again, which, if it is the people who just moved in, it in all likelihood might. The landlord should also be able to change your locks to more secure ones, at the very least. Do you have a safe? It might be a wise investment depending on how long it'll take you to find somewhere new to live.

That is so fucked up. I've had money, not 2,000 but like 400 stolen out of my purse when I was at a friends once and I left the room. Whole night $ gone and it feels terrible like I danced for all those people for you?! ya know. They had a shady friend stop by for a split second and it was enough time.. It sucks that desperate people out there are so selfish. I just tell myself those assholes bought too much pills/coke whatever and od' because they probably don't ever get 2,000$ that fast. Fuck them. Try and stay positive because unlike that crackhead bitch, you can make that money again being sexy

Try and tell your landlord what you suspect in case they might be able to help you, you never know.
also, guard dog? Or play a soundtrack of loud dogs barking when you leave by the door at night just til you get outta there and somewhere you feel safer, it can make robbers doublethink. . good luck!

Hi Nina, I'm really sorry this happened to you. If it happened to me I don't think I would ever go home. I really hope you can find a place to live that isn't sketch. I'd rather rent a basement apt from some retirees in the the burbs than have to deal with crackheads, that's for sure!

Yeah if you can afford to, try to see if you can sublet where you stay and move. Or maybe get an alarm system installed they dont cost that much. Ive learned my lesson about letting people, especially neighbors in your house.

I'm sorry the police won't help you and this seems to be common practice where you live. If it were me I would call the police right away anyways, and say that you saw the woman on your floor acting suspicious and you believe it was her...they can take fingerprints and if she has a drug problem, she probably has hers on record..I'm sorry this happened to you.

Unfortunately I've heard this is a common thing for dancers because people get to know our schedule and know we have cash on hand.

Get some deposit slips and deposit your money on the way home. Any ATM machine will let you make a deposit.

Thanks. I still haven't reported it to the police, but I did tell my landlord and I explained why I'm pretty sure who did it and told her the apartment number. Hopefully whoever did it backs off.

That's a good idea. Since it happened I've been taking my money to work and keeping it in my locker. But still, I hate even being out and about in my neighborhood with such large sums of money.

Thanks so much ladies for all your support! It really means a lot. On the bright side, in the last three days of work I've made back what was stolen from me My sister's boyfriend lives two floors below me and has a gun and now he watches my apartment while I'm gone (even though I don't keep my money or things of value there anymore). I also put signs up in the elevator and the lobby of my building explaining that there are thieves in the building and warning people to be aware of it. I want these people to know that I'm not just going to let this go. I'm looking at apartments this weekend in a very nice, safe suburb. And I can force a smile knowing that in 10 years the people who burglarized my apartment will probably be in prison or worse and I'll be a successful business attorney by then 2,000 gone still really sucks, but I'm doing the best I can to keep my head up. Thanks again, everyone!

Well said^! I can relate, & NM I am so sorry that happened to you..my Dad had a ring stolen by my supposed friend, rage, yep. Honestly, I would still file a police report..at least have it on record

As a teen we were robbed by some local teen delinquents that I knew. It was so hard to see my mother suffer over jewelery my dead father gave her that was stolen. It took 5 years to not feel rage anytime something reminded me of this event. Robbery is disgusting and it's violating in a way only someone who has been violated can understand. Get the fuck out of there, someone know how to break into your house now and they probably know you work at night.

Or, failing that, could you try to take it off your income tax?
Hugs to you, & I hope you make it back quickly. It will take time for you to process this, be gentle on yourself.

I second that! At least document it.

for those not familiar with the Detroit area what she says is true. I have friends in that area and it's sad how bad it's gotten - the city is broke and keeps cutting police back to way less than what is needed. Hell, even some murder investigations seem to not get attention. I'd at least report it though.

Honestly I would not even trust a safe. All they need is to find you home and put a gun in your face. Put it in the bank and get the hell out of that apartment asap.

Glad to hear you are moving too! That area is pretty unusual- drive a few miles and the crime rate can drop or skyrocket, depending on what direction you go.

I'm so sorry this happened to you Nina. The same thing happened to me a decade ago when I came home late from work. They took broken jewelry that I was intending on getting fixed, winter coats, and vcr. I also had $5k stashed in cash in a corner of a dresser but miraculously, they did not find that. The police said that most break ins are by people you know or have been watching you. If they were really watching me they would have known I kept and where I kept my cash at. After I got the police report, I did not feel safe anymore. I slept on my sofa at night with a knife tightly by my side. Next day I spoke with my landlord and was able to break my lease and move. I also immediately got a safe deposit box at the bank to keep that cash in. I never want to risk it again when it comes to keeping large sums at home. Good luck on where you end up living. Sometimes paying more for where you live is worth your money and of course your life.

get money orders from the liquor store on the way to school if you have no other way. Make the money orders out to yourself and then send them into the bank, deposit them into the bank on a day off or whatever. You can send checks/money orders/ etc to the bank to be deposited via mail

Your right about suspecting crackheads. They need their crack money and always steal. Get a dog if you can.

An apartment complex I lived in had a huge string of robberies, including our apartment (my roommates got robbed but I hadn't moved in yet). One day after months of these robberies the crazy druggie in next building over had a bad trip and was going crazy, breaking bottles off his balcony and threatening people. The cops showed up and he threatened them so they broke his door down to get him - guess what was inside - everything that had been stolen from EVERY SINGLE BREAK IN in the complex, minus some he had sold/pawned. Get the cops there for some reason. Get those fuckers arrested, whether you get your cash back or not.

wow, I'm so sorry this happened to you. it's a really good thing you were able to make it all back quickly, but of course it still sucks.

just to add to some of the advice given (I'm sure everyone here could benefit from the advice)- a lot of banks that accept deposits 24 hours are in really sketchy areas, or at least they can seem sketchy. since they're closed they aren't very well lit. that's why I often go to a 24 hour walgreens or other similar store and trade my cash for a prepaid visa card. I feel a lot more secure parking in a big, well lit parking lot and trading my cash in a brightly lit store instead of standing alone in the dark on the street at an atm. you could carry this card in your dancer purse around the club so you would always have it on your person, or you could hide it easily in your house, like taped in a random book, or under a coffee table, etc etc. if it ever got stolen you would immediately call and cancel (you have to have an online account to use it) and the company would ship you a new card.

That's a great suggestion! Right now I've been having to walk around with huge sums of money since it isn't safe at my house and I don't always have time for the bank.

Oh yeah, and also - I haven't seen the crackhead lady since that morning after the burglary. The buzz on her is that she was staying there with a man who already lived there because she didn't have anywhere else to stay. Funny how once my money goes missing, she's gone as well.

A woman stopping in the middle of the night on the way home from the strip club to deposit hundreds of dollars into the ATM in Detroit...? Totally unsafe.

Good news, ladies! I got a new apartment! It's in a very nice suburb about 20 minutes outside of the shit hole Detroit neighborhood I currently live in. It's move-in ready and I'll be moving there at the end of the month

that's the absolute best way to deal with this problem.

In regard to making a police report of the burglary, consider that this will immediately lead to 20 questions ... you're a 'stripper' ? What club do you work at ? Are there drugs and prostitution at your club ? How much money was stolen ? How much do you usually earn ? Obviously if you report all of your income and pay all appropriate taxes, and if you don't mind a 'public record' being created that confirms your working as a 'stripper', then the only thing you need worry about is the cops actually being interested enough to investigate.
