Ok so I have had my new pole, an xpole titanium gold installed in my living room for 3 weeks. We took it down and put it back up in the same place because one of my roomates had family come visit for a day last week. I noticed when we reinstalled the pole there was some creaking when I started dancing on it. It went away though. so I thought nothing of it. Now, a few days later, I see a crack in my ceiling, about 8" away from the edge of the ceiling dome...it is not a full-fledged crack YET, but there is definitely a visible ridge in the ceiling. I freaked out as soon as I saw it and loosened the pole thinking it must be from over-tightening ( thinking aha, that would have been why it was creaking when it was reinstalled, because it was too tight). This crack was not there the first two weeks the pole was up...which leads me to think it is simply a matter of over-tightening, but the worrywart in me is worried it could be a more serious problem like the pole not being installed properly under a ceiling joist?
I was initially sure that it was, as I used a stud finder, and initially a reason for me ugrading to the xpole from my old lil minx pole (other than the fact that x poles, are, you know, better :p), was because I was having a hard time installing the lil minx in that room, I couldn't drill into the ceiling "stud". I figured it was because the ceiling studs are metal, and the fact that I couldn't even drill into the spot where the pole is installed made me feel pretty confident it was in a secure spot. Other information that is relevant is the wierd construction of my appartment building. The building dates to the 1890s, but when they re-did the wiring in the 90s, instead of cutting into the plaster walls and ceilings they simply ran the wires in metal tubes that run along the walls. To hide the unsightlyness of all the wires they added a false ceiling (drywall) 4" below the original ceiling, which is held up (according to my landlord) with steel studs. Now, the pole is also located near a light...could it not be that the stud finder picked up on a metal electrical box for the light, or something else other than a ceiling stud?
I know this kind of building construction probably isnt that common, but any help in finding out exactly is wrong would be much appreciated!
