Default How would you feel about being sketched while on stage?

Hi, I'm new to the SC scene. I have many questions, of which the following is probably the least important, but here it is:

How would you feel about a customer drawing or painting pictures of you while you were working? I like to draw, and I might like to bring my sketch pad to a SC some time. I guess the darkness might be a problem, but that didn't stop Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Are you tipping? Are you drawing what you see or being demanding in terms of poses/standing still? Are you going to profit off these drawings?

    1. I doubt any club is going to let you sit stage-side and sketch the dancers.
    2. Assuming the club lets you, the dancer is not going to sit for you unless the meter is running.
    3. It's probably safer to have a girl model for you at your studio.

I wouldn't sit at the rail while doing this, but I might tip or give a dancer a drawing if she wanted one. I'd just be drawing what's going on around me (again like Toulouse-Lautrec at Moulin Rouge, though I don't pretend to be in his league), not asking for poses. Would I profit from the drawings? Probably not directly. I doubt I'd be able to do more than sketches in that environment. If I wanted to sell them, I'd have to do most of the work offsite to finish them, and I don't know anybody that would want to buy drawings of SC scenes. But I could probably learn something about drawing the figure in motion or portraying eroticism that might enhance my other artwork in some way.

Go to the SC without the pad. When you get home, then draw. Doubt you sketching would fly. That's like taking pictures and would make some dancers uncomfortable.

Might tip? You're watching the ladies and enjoying their entertainment (albeit in a different way than intended), so the absolute least you can do is tip the ladies who you're watching and sketching. That's, of course, assuming you'd be allowed do, which as yoda and Vyanka pointed out, you probably wouldn't be.

Right? That got me too. Strippers dont like those who watch all night without tipping. A sketch pad isn't going to make it exceptional.

I'm trying to go easy hear Morty as you say you are new to the scene. Clearly you are a bit naive as to how the clubs work. The dancers dance and you pay to watch them dance. Assuming you got your sketch pad past the front door and camped-out at a table without getting hassled by a bouncer the real trouble would start when you pull out your pencil, brush, colored pencils or whatever and start trying to draw naked women in the club. The girls aren't going to go for this anymore than they would let a guy with a cell phone ca,era photograph them in a club. Forget about the Supreme Court ruling that exotic dancing is an art form. Clearly these women are beautiful and enjoyable to watch but they are doing it for a paycheck, not to serve as your muse. If you want to draw beautiful women the best thing to do is hire them to model for you...outside of the club environment.

Take your sketch pad and head down to a club or two. Ask the person at the front door if it's OK to go inside and draw pictures of the dancers while they are working. Let us know how you make out.

Plus it will just look weird.

I've been an artist for years before I was a DJ, and a fan of Toulouse-Latrec, so I can understand the idea to some extent.

But he lived in those brothels he was doing his drawings in. If he'd walked in with a sketch pad and asked if he could draw pictures, they would have tossed him out.

I knew a guy who did this but instead of buying dances he'd pay the dancer the same amount he would have paid for a dance. It didn't bother me because I have worked as a figure model. I suppose though if I hadn't been paid I'd be livid, especially if he made money off me.

Yeah, I thought it might not go over well. I guess I can use this calendar that BouncerDude posted to get the poses right if I need to.

    Thanks for your responses.

I have seen ppl get kicked out for doing this. If you want to do "life drawing" in a SC, and she is happy to let you sketch her, then book the girl for a private show/lap dance.

I would be OK with it if it were in VIP only. If it was onstage I think I would feel a little creeped out to be honest.

a champagne room would be your best bet.

curious, how much do you think you would tip for how much time you expect from them?

Frankly, I might privately commend you for the ingenuity that may be required to make it in w/ a sketch pad, & the sheer gall of bringing it in in the first place. But if you were to sit at my stage working on it, tipping or no it would either get snatched or kicked. I would lump that right in w/ the punks who bring in cell phones & other small recording devices & try to ninja footage.

Seriously, T.-Lautrec idolisation aside, where are you getting the idea that this would go over well? One of the reasons we use stage names is to maintain sm lvl of anonymity. From a dancer's perspective, you could have any number of things in mind for her image once you have it. If you really have your heart set on sketching dancers, either develop a photographic memory so you can sketch when you get home, or come in unarmed (read: w/o the drawing utensils) & ask your dancer of choice directly to come & model for you.

Want to improve your sketching from life? Go to a park, the zoo, a circus if you fancy acrobatics, but not a SC.

I didn't want to bring a sketchpad into the SC because I want to draw naked women -- I can draw nude models for less than the cover charge at a SC. I wanted to bring a sketchpad to the SC because I bring a notebook and/or sketchpad with me almost *everywhere* I go, though most of the time it stays in my backpack, I'm ashamed to say. Being an artist is largely, maybe mostly, about noticing things and paying attention, imho. There's plenty to notice in a SC, especially for someone like me for whom it is still relatively new.

I did not assume this would go over well -- that's why I asked the question. But anyway, even if the dancers didn't mind, the real problem with this idea is that I can't ogle and draw at the same time. The two activities require me to look and respond in different ways, even though both involve a sensual appreciation of what I'm seeing.

charlotte -- I guess if I tipped, it'd be the usual tip that I would give for a routine. The guys at the rail typically tip $2-$10 around here, I think, so I'd take that as my guideline. I'm not going to tip extra cash because I happen to be sitting farther back and drawing, though I'd give her a drawing if she wanted one.

Just watch a movie that's stripper related. Don't even bother going to a SC.

    Um....yeah...just stay home....

We already have back rub guy, foot rub guy, pizza guy, Chinese food guy, chocolate guy, origami guy and "I just want to be your friend" guy. The clubs don't really need "sketch artist guy".
There are two kinds of men in strip clubs: The guys who spend money and the guys who are in the way.

Vyanka had a great suggestion for you...it might even be on net flicks.

I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt here, having been an artist for many years, and having found a few ways to mix art with the stripclub scene, including bodypainting:

Granted that you are simply wanting to take the sketchpad everywhere you go--and I have had fellow artists who liked doing that. Sure it's a good idea in other environments.

Granted that your goal is not to create exact, easily recognizable likenesses that could get the dancers in trouble with family, or violate their privacy--which is a tall order watching a woman in perpetual motion anyway. But a lot of them won't realize how hard that is anyway, and you are dealing with their perception of what you are up to..

Granted that you want to capture the mood of the club in your artwork, which means the otherwise most excellent advice offered by my esteemed colleagues above--to stay home and watch a movie--won't be as satisfying.

It's just not going to go over well. Most people there will think you are weird, sorry. Don't take it personally, stripclubs are very different environments. Come to think of it, I do remember a guy who used to do drawings in one funky dive club where anything in the world would fly so long as you were spending money lol. He wasn't very good, but some of the dancers sort of liked it as I recall. Most thought he was weird.

Your best bet, if you really want to pursue this angle in spite of the negative but realistic feedback? Go to the funkier or more relaxed clubs that have more of a 'No Rules' atmosphere. Leave the sketch pad at home the first few times. Get to know the dancers--but also get to know the bartenders, bouncers and manager (the latter being trickier but not impossible in a relaxed small club). Tip the fuck out of everyone. Buy the bouncers a few drinks. Managers drink free, but many of them will appreciate the offer, if you don't act like you want something.

Talk about your being an artist, but be very low key about it.

Start sketching on napkins, to get them used to the idea. They aren't going to give a fuck about that in the dives, especially if you're that guy that tips them and buys drinks. Then either bring the sketchbook and leave it in your car and ask if it's OK if the response is good to the napkin sketches, or just ask if it's OK after a while. The manager or the senior bouncers are the ones to be sure to get the OK from. Unfortunately for you, the aesthetic appreciation of the typical manager or bouncer in the rougher clubs is microscopic. They are usually suspicious of anything anyone wants to do that is different. You could still have a dancer or two flip out on you even then, especially in the rougher clubs.

Watch out for the ogling thing. It's going to be totally counterproductive artistically, and also will completely undermine your legitimacy as a non-threatening artist, that you have worked so hard to establish. I can tell you it's not that difficult to 'put it in a box' mentally, once you get used to the idea. Trust me, I've had to do that in order to bodypaint effectively.

I still think it's not going to work, but if I were to try it, that's what I would do.

^Got it! The sketchpad stays in the car. I totally understand being able to 'put it in a box'; I was drawing nude models before I lost my virginity. But if I'm going to a SC, I won't want to put it in a box. So I might as well just enjoy what they want me to enjoy and not rock the boat, since drawing will just get in the way of my main reason for going there anyway.

Im coming from the other end here, im an artist & a dancer-i recently made myself a sanity kit, a few tiny sketch books & some micron pens that fit in my money bag. Ill sit in the back & do gestures for a few minutes when i want a break, or at the end Of the night when ive made my $ and dont feel Like bothering with the remaining time wasters. I think i understand the intentions Of the op.
stay off the rail, that does seem awkward. My advice is find a Girl you really Like the look/personality Of & Go all out, bring a backpack with charcoals or pastel and book a vip-a lot if the rooms are really beautiful & interesting, it would be great to get a full detailed drawing in there. it would be a unique experience for the dancer as well, just take some time in choosing a Girl so she understands whats going to happen. You could end up with really interesting image and an actual experience to Go with it rather thanjust lurking.
While your in the main room choosing a Girl bring a pocket size moleskin or something small for gestures. If your in the club watching at all-tip the girls-we are in there getting naked for you!

Default Re: How would you feel about being sketched while on stage?

This reminds me of this young kid that came in to this dive bar years ago and drew people. He gave away a bunch of his drawings and the managers found them all left behind in the dressing room. He ruined a bunch of girls' outfits getting charcoal all over chairs. Management put two and two together, and when he came back and brought out his pad he was immediately asked to leave.
