The trainer is correct. It works muscles in certain angles.
It can help you "tone up", but as far as building useful muscle and functional strength, you're better off with real weights. As part of a program, sure. As your only program, no.
Worthless, no. Better options for the time spent, yes. You can get much better "bang for the effort" doing more whole body movements. Check out some of these vids for some whole body functional training:

It just seems like if you are able to increase the weight used on the machine over time then by definition you must be getting stronger even if it does not "show" per se... I see your point though.
