    Default low carb + vegan?

    so, i've always been a vegetarian, and i'm usually healthier when i'm vegan. over the past 6 months i've gained a ton of weight (i took a break from dancing, boooo!) and now that I'm going back I'd like to lose it all again. so my problem is, i've been eating clean for two weeks now and i just don't seem to be losing as much weight as a should be, and i'm wondering if this is because my diet is too high in carbs. a lot of the meals i have revolve around things like oatmeal, sweet potato, chickpeas, other beans, etc.....do you think that it's possible to eat somewhat low carb and stay vegan, or am i dreaming? i've been eating tofu but i don't want to eat a ton because my estrogen levels are already too high and i've heard that doesn't help. ughhh, i just want to be skinny again! anyways, thanks in advance ladies!

    Yes, I think the carbs have a lot to do with this. I had a similar experience this past year in which I was put on a high-estrogen birth control and with it, my vegetarian with very limited dairy diet made me gain 15lbs. Oral food allergy syndrome and growing lactose and gluten sensitivity (like curled up in a ball almost crying from stabbing pains after pasta) forced me to go back to eating meats. I also changed to a lower estrogen BC. Soy products won't do your estrogen levels any favors, thereby contributing to water retention and weight gain. And carbs will kick your ass, unfortunately.

    all of those foods you listed are really high calorie, are you counting calories? you can definitely be vegan and low carb, but to lose weight you must restrict calories.

    thank you ladies! i actually haven't been counting calories, normally when i stop eating things like gluten, sugar, and junk i don't really have to worry about it....looks like it's time to step my game up!

    you don't need to replace carbs with protein. how much fat are you consuming? I'm not strict low carb or strict vegan but avocados, soy cheese, almond and coconut based milk & yogurt, and nuts are staples in my diet. I make a lot of smoothies with whey protein. lots of people like seeds too.

    I'm not going to say that what you are eating is "junk"...but they aren't the things you need to be revolving your meals around, especially if you are trying to lose weight. your meals need to revolve around low cal veggies. you can do lots of yummy things with veggies- my personal favorites are cucumber salads (chop up a cucumber and then put whatever you want on top) and grilled peppers. you can have some sweet potato or beans on the side, just watch your portions.
