I have seen quite a few recent threads along the same lines of "why aren't I making more money", and thought that it would be a good idea to give people a list of things to double-check before they get really concerned/decided camming isn't for them/give up/cry/drink/throw things.
Please feel free to expand or add to the stuff that I can think of, especially for non SM sites, as I am primarily a SM girl.
1. What is your upload speed? If you are under 2, this is going to cause you problems. Make sure that you have the highest speed you can reasonably afford - it makes a huge difference!
2. Are you actually streaming/visible/audible? On SM, you can check your cammodels link, otherwise you can check your site through a proxy, on your phone, or get a friend to check it for you. Make sure that you are actually streaming, can hear yourself and see yourself clearly.
3. Are you well-lit? You don't need crazy studio lighting, just make sure that you are nicely visible!! You can use clip-on lights from the hardware store, ikea lamps, or just play with the settings on your webcam!
4. Do you promote? Do you have a twitter, at the very least? Are you tweeting when you are going on cam? Are you pimping out your cammodels.com link or other affiliate links?
5. Are you paying attention to the camera? Or are you reading SW/watching movies while the camsite is open in the background? Guys can see porn for free - pay them attention, because that is why they are paying you.
6. Are your rates reasonable? Have a look at the "raise your rates" thread for more detail, but the basic principle is that is it pretty difficult to make good money if you are ridiculously cheap. No need to leap to $50 a minute, but do yourself a favor, and get up to $3 a minute as a bare minimum. Preferably more. Ideally much more.
7. Are you working enough hours? If you are working 2 hours a week, you aren't going to start banking any time soon! Work as many hours as you comfortably can, or ideally want to (i.e, if you just want to work a couple hours a night in the evening, make sure you are working at least 10 hours a week, every week). The fewer hours that you work, the more important it is that you work the same schedule every week to allow regs to come back and find you!
8. Have you been working long enough? Yes, it is possible to do fairly well as a newbie, but don't expect a grand a night on your first night. Can't say it enough - camming is a marathon, not a sprint. Give yourself a bit of time to build up, and keep upping those goals.
9.Is your computer able to handle the programmes that you are running? Check your CPU while you stream - if it is off the charts, you will be laggy and prone to crashes. The encoder, splitcamming, running recording programs/other streams/etc is great - but not if it completely overwhelms your hardware. Update as soon as possible.
10. Have you muted basics/free members? Most sites have tiers of members - ignore/minimize/mute the most basic level. They will drive you insane.
11. Do you have a semi-decent cam? Built-in equipment usually won't cut it.
