    Default What do we claim

    Hey ladies,

So, I'm in the middle of filling out the FAFSA for university and realized...I have no idea how much I'm claiming. When its time to leave, we simply tip out and go on our merry way. Do clubs typically claim a certain amount for the dancers..? And how does being an independent contractor play into this? Is it our job to claim and if so how do we do it? I just realized that I have no idea how this works. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I know that club !!! Pretty nice setup, actually.

In regard to filling out the FAFSA form, you report the same amount of income as you did to the IRS ... or that the club reported ( or will report ) to the IRS via form 1099. FAFSA shares information with the IRS and college bursar's offices, so whatever you enter will be automatically cross-checked.

I know of people that have been prosecuted for falsifying FAFSA forms - those were special circumstances and I would not be worried about anything like that in your situation -- as Monie says, they are monitered.

specifically, FAFSA appears to be looking for the 'Adjusted Gross Income' amount from your tax return.

Getting the impression that the OP may be new to dancing, and may have never filed a tax return before, for independent contractor dancers it basically starts with Schedule C 'profit or loss from a business'. You basically keep track of and add up all of the money that you have 'walked out of the club with' throughout the year, keep track of and deduct any legitimate business expenses ( i.e. costumes, shoes, others ), and arrive at a 'net' profit from your business. That 'net profit' then carries over to the regular 1040 tax return, where other forms of income ( interest and dividends, others ) get added and where personal exemptions and deductions get subtracted, eventually arriving at a figure for Adjusted Gross Income.

Of course, the 1040 tax return will also arrive at a figure for federal taxes due. For independent contractor dancers this basically amounts to 15% of your AGI in social security taxes, plus anywhere from 0% to 36% in federal income tax ( depending on how high your AGI actually is ) on top of the 15%.

The Op's siggy shows she lives in a state that also levees its own income tax. Thus once the federal tax returns are done, the state tax returns will also need to be completed. Georgia state income taxes will add yet another 0% to 7% to the total taxes due ( depending on how high your AGI actually is ).

^^^ well that situation ... i.e. a club 'forcing' dancers to officially 'acknowledge' that the club paid the dancer $50 or whatever, when the club didn't actually pay that money, isn't exactly on following the letter of the law. This will result in a 1099 showing a few thousand dollars worth of 'official' dancer income from the club, which she most likely did not really earn. There isn't any 100% squeaky clean way to account for this ... with the least of the evils accounting method probably being to list nightly dancer income in two columns. The first column is the $50 that will be reported by the club, and the second column will be the dancer's total actual earnings MINUS the $50.
