Default Got tight SORE muscles you want to "fix" cheap?

If you're not a regular at some of the better gyms, you may not know of foam rollers. They are used big time now for reducing tight muscles, pain, etc, and improving mobility and such. They are cheap (got one off Amazon for $20 shipped) and easy to use. There's many ways to use them. I have been following this "routine" below after breakfast and it takes 10-15 mins. Helps a ton with my tight back and hips from sitting in front of a comp all day working.

Many vids on YT for foam rolling for specific areas of pain and tightness, but this one is fast and effective for legs/back:

    5 foam roller exercises

    If you use one already:

What's your favorite use for them?
Use at the gym only or have some at home?
Have a favorite "move" with roller I should know about?

I've never heard of this, but it sounds awesome. My hips are so tight!

Mine too. You'll be amazed what a simple foam rolling routine (as posted URL above) can do for you there. BTW, hurts like an SOB at first because your connective tissue is so tight. But, stick with it, and way less pain and tightness is the result. You'll notice big improvement in mobility in your hips after the very first time.

Is it better than yoga or pilates? Or does it have the same effect?

My boyfriend has one and I have used it a few times. It hurts so much! It feels amazing afterwards though.

I mostly use it on my thighs, because they are always tight and I don't like to have them massaged. I plan on adding it to my regimen as I attempt to become flexible enough to do the splits.

Hmm. Would these be good for a fellow who is a golfer and experiencing major back pain? One of his vertebrae is off by seven degrees, so we can't do much about that without surgery, but his doctor has him on muscle relaxers and an anti-inflammatory for the next six weeks. The muscle relaxers make him more than a little loopy and don't seem to be doing much anyway, so far.

tuesdaymarie, you might suggest cannabis pills. You can get them online, no weird high feeling like muscle relaxers.

My ex-husband is a tattoo artist that started to have back problems after really long tattoo sessions. A friend of his suggested the foam roller for his tight muscles and he loved it. I did a few sessions with it too and would recommend it highly. It was kind of painful in a hard massage way but def effective.

Different. One is about stretching and or strengthening, foam roller would be more of a compliment to them, like getting a massage to fix sore muscles, etc. Here's a decent write up:

Foam rollers are the poor mans massage therapist, soft tissue work for the masses. As strength and conditioning coaches and personal trainers watched elite level athletes tout their success and improvement from various soft tissue techniques the obvious question arose. How can I mass-produce "massage" or soft tissue work for large groups of athletes at a reasonable cost? Enter the foam roller. Physical Therapist Mike Clark is credited by many, the author included, with the initial exposure of the athletic and physical therapy communities to the foam roller and to what he termed "self myofascial release".

Just added a, and it's like foam roller on steroids. Hurts like an SOB in some spots, but take the roller to another level. Highly recommended if you already use foam rollers, not recommended for those new to foam rolling for soft tissue/trigger point work.

I use it to massage sore muscles. Your bodyweight creates just the RIGHT amount of pressure on those sore spots. It's so much faster and cheaper than a massage.

Just watch your balance. Foam rollers take some getting used to. I fell off a couple of times.

A standard foam roller or the Rumble Roller? The latter takes it to a whole new level to be sure! Anyone with tight muscles, painful spots, etc (which is like all of us....) not utilizing a basic foam roller is either crazy or stupid. Bang for the $$$, there's nothing one can do that will help as much if 15-20 mins per day of rolling is done. Also allows you to go longer between massages and or chyro visits I find.

RE: Rumble roller, I have added a post and vid on my site if interested:

The Rumble Roller Takes Soft Tissue Work To The The Next level

Like many people, I have my fair share of aches & pains, tight muscles, and hard earned small injuries and such. Like many, I have been using a foam roller for soft tissue work or SMFR (Self-Myofascial Release) work to improve sore muscles, tight muscles, and general recoup. I generally do my foam rolling in the morning for 15-20 minutes while the oatmeal cooks and coffee brews. It gets me ready for a day at the computer also. I also use it at the gym before workouts, a few times per week, and I find doing so reduces DOMS. Foam rolling is often referred to as “the poor mans massage therapist.” In terms of time and $$$ spent, it’s a no brainer in terms of benefits you receive. If you’re not using a foam roller regularly, you should be, like starting yesterday!

Enter the Rumble Roller, which takes foam rolling to another level and seems to last far longer than the standard rollers. I was going to make one of my usual videos talking about the benefits of foam rollers, and why the Rumble Roller superior, but someone beat me to it:
