Default My Hair Wont Hold a Curl!! Advice?

Perhaps someone here can suggest something?

My hair is naturally tightly curled like Scary Spice's hair. The strands are fine but my hair is thick and is color processed. Sometimes I wear it straight by blowing it out then flat ironing it.

Whenever I want to get soft big curls, I either flip the flat iron or use a curling iron, but no matter how much product I use the curls never stay more than a half hour. My last photo shoot took forever because my curls kept falling out despite the various times I re-curled it with an iron. My hair is long so wet-setting or setting under a dryer literally takes hours. I've experimented with hot roller kits and they don't appear to be any better.

Does anyone else have this problem?

If you're not already doing so, a trick with product for hair like this is to use it after you curl. Use a deep conditioner frequently to protect your hair and repair damage, but leave product (sprays, serums, etc) off your hair before you try to style with heat. Use a hairspray on strands immediately after you curl them, then go over your whole head again after you've finished. My hair would never hold either, but this method has let me keep curls all night.

We have the same hair type (3C)and I have a few whispy, fine hairs mixed in. Have you tried washing, blow drying, straightening, and then using setting lotion before using flexirods (foam rollers)? Or just washing, and using the setting lotion (mix in moose too if you want) before using the flexirods? You can then wrap your hair before bed and take them out when you wake up, or blowdry a section, then take it down to "test" the curl. Try doing that and see if it works and then sealing the curl with spritz. It usually works for me. I also have part natural, part chemically relaxed hair but I'm growing out my natural curls for another 2-3 years so it's long enough for me to be happy with before chopping the relaxed/dyed bits off. I love the straight look on me but I find myself constantly playing with my natural curls and being in awe of how silky and bouncy they are lol.

Here's a tutorial. You don't have to follow the whole thing, but it gives you an idea and you can get big or small flexirods too.

wash your hair less. my hair holds a curl better when there is a little product and natural oil build up.

Yes, my hair type is 3C.

Any moisture (setting lotion and such) AFTER straightening? Wouldn't that just become a frizzy, crunchy mess?

Thanks for posting the video. Unfortunately those aren't the kind of curls I am trying to achieve.

    I'm going for this:

I have a photo shoot coming up and need a style that stays. The annoying part is that I cant get my hair done the night before because I have to work. The obvious answer would be to hire a stylist for the day of the shoot but there is a restriction on the crew size. This so frustrating!

    Hey Tabitha,

That's what's so special about flexirods, you can achieve any look with it. That's the style I'm wearing right now actually. Setting lotion is more of a watery texture so there should be no crunch unless you choose to add the mouse or hair spritz. I usually wash, then stretch out my curl by combing and then applying the setting lotion, then rolling up. I have straightened first for a straighter look and because my hair was already straightened the water didn't have time to re-curl my hair because it was already stretched and wrapped around the flexi rod. In order to achieve Agulera's look, simply use a larger flexirod and carefully brush out the curls with a paddle brush. That or purchase a lace frontal with the same look?

Note- she has a weave, but I believe the same would still apply. It's worked for me on my natural hair. If it's too curly, I brush carefully with a paddle brush to get the desired look I want.

I love hot rollers! Make sure they are really hot and your hair is clean and dry. Leave them in a LONG time. Until they are cool. I have the conair ones and I love them. I have 2 sets.

2 days before the shoot, I bought plastic cage xtra large rollers and a dryer bonnet.

After briefly blow drying with a comb attachment, i damp-set my hair in the halo pattern w/ setting lotion. My dryer is ionic so the dry time was about 20-30 minutes. The result was a little poofy because I rolled on top of my crown. That night, I spritzed with a tiny bit of water and put in sponge rollers before bed. Took the sponge rollers out at the shooting location. Applied some pantene relaxed and natural cream oil and gave my hair a hard brushing with my Mercier detangling brush. The curls stayed in all day.

Couldn't find flexi-rollers that were big enough. I owned some years ago and never could figure out the damn things so its just as well.

Glad it worked out for you! I remember my mom used to put those in my hair when I was a kid. Ouch! Got any pics? hehe.
