MAKE SURE you get PRIVACY PROTECTION when you get your domain!!!! It costs an extra $10 or so a year, sometimes less depending on the registrar, but you need it! If you don't get it anyone that knows your domain can find your real name and your address! Even if you have an LLC or other business entity you still want that info private too!
As far as where you register it doesn't really matter. Sometimes I will register my domain with the same host because then it is just one company to deal with. However, sometimes you will choose one over the other. If you choose a domain with one company and host with another company, you need to have your domain company "point" your domain to your host, and some places make it more complicated than others.
If you are not super technically savvy I would make it easier on yourself by using the same company for both. If you are looking for a deal namecheap.com includes free privacy protection with all their domains and I think they are $5 a year, but it's an extra step.
I like Hostgator because they have a plan where it's unlimited domains, unlimited everything for $10/month and they have great customer service. Their domains are $15/year and extra for privacy protection.
I also have purchased domains on GoDaddy and had them point to my host just because they had a good deal running at the time, but again it's an extra step. I don't like their hosting I wouldn't recommend them for anything other than domains.
