    Default The Hobbit (Movie)

Had enough reality for the week, went to see The Hobbit in IMax 3D.

If you liked the Lord Of The Rings, you'll like this one, but it's not at the same level as Lord Of The Rings. It's also clearly going to be Part 1 of a series, which I didn't know about. My fault for not checking, but was left feeling a tad unsatisfied at the end not knowing this is going to be a series. The Hobbit is all about taking on that dragon, and they don't get to the damn dragon, but they do fight just about everything else.

CGI is great, but over used vs Lord Of The Rings which augmented the movie greatly to be sure, but was second to the acting and human back story. Hobbit depends too much on over the top CGI I thought, the action/fighting is a tad cartoonish compared to Lord Of the Rings (but The Hobbit was intended for a younger audience as a book and I suspect they decided to follow that with the movie?) but has its moments and a few battle scenes are visually epic.

Gets a B+ from me. Anyone else see it yet?

I read The Hobbit when I was ~9. It was one of the first books to make me really love reading fantasy, a hobby that has been a huge part of my life since then. Naturally, I was very excited to see it. I forgot it was 1/3 too, so that disappointed me a bit, but I can't pretend I'm not a little excited for parts two and three anyway. I enjoyed the music, and I was glad to not have to deal with Frodo for long. Elijah Wood's voice is not my cup of tea. I didn't mind the CGI, and I think that as the second and third parts unfold, the acting/"human(oid)" element of it will get better.

Lord of the rings needed at least 3 movies to do, and they an amazing job of it. Didn't even occur to me the Hobbit would not be a stand alone movie as it's not a big book nor a complex story. I don't think it warrants 3 part series. Oh well. Of course I'll still see the others! But, if Lord Of The Rings is an A+ (was for me), I'd have to say the Hobbit is a step below that for me.

I didn't originally think that it needed three movies, but I do recall there being a lot of dialogue and side stories. I imagine the primary motivation was money, but I still think it can be made into three quality films that do the story justice. I'd rather have too much than have half the story gutted. Plus, I mean, you need to give non-Hollywood writers a couple of years to come up with the next big series for Hollywood to methodically rape and pillage, and this will buy time.

I hate Hobbits, especially how they were done in LOTR, but loved the movie in spite of them. I will probably make a custom edit of LOTR, with no hobbits at all except them getting killed maybe--but do any of them ever die? I don't think so. I did this with Titanic--sans Leonardo and whatshername--and it's a great movie now.

So anyway since it will be impossible to avoid major hobbit scenes, I have mixed feelings about this one. Also if the battle scenes are cartoonish it will be a letdown as that was the best part of the book--the Battle of Five Armies was epic. Is that even in this volume though? It didn't happen until the end of the book, after the dragon as I recall.

So far, less Hobbits in this one actually. Remember, The Hobbit was just one in the book.

went and saw it with my son tonight! just got back actually..i loved loved loved the book ( not a LOTR book fan, the movies were ok). i'd give it a B or B+..i can't quite put my finger on what could have been better tho..maybe the character development..also it was less serious than LOTR. what i like in a movie is a consistent atmosphere..am i making any sense? kind of an aura..i think it was a bit inconsistent but the kiddo liked it ! ill go see the second one

Ahh cool thanks for letting me know, I will go see it then.

I read the book at age 13 or so, it's been a while & it kind of faded into reading LOTR with the hobbits. I do remember it was more oriented to younger readers so figured the hobbits would get equal time in this movie. The Battle of Five Armies was fantastic though.

What I really want to see is some movies made from The Silmarillion. I heard that is in the works. That was my favorite--definitely not kid stuff, great battles, very few hobbits, etc.

I actually just had a chance to see this new movie yesterday during my short 'holiday' return visit to the USA ... although not in 3D ...

At any rate, I had read the book years and years ago. This movie takes MAJOR liberties in the story line ... which was understandable knowing that the producer intends to make a trilogy ( and there simply isn't enough original material to allow for that ). As a 'purist' I found this a bit disturbing ... but then again there was zero chance of ever seeing an accurate film version of the original novel.

In terms of visual imagery, the producer did an unbelievable job ... virtually every image I had created in my 'mind's eye' while reading the novel appeared on the big screen in the same way I had imagined it.

The producer also did an excellent job of 'linking' the Hobbit movie script and characters to the LOTR movie script and characters ... something that wan't easy to do given the fact that the Hobbit novel was written and published well before the LOTR books. Of course, George Lucas had provided a creative precedent ! Unfortunately, this background / linkage stuff makes the first hour of the movie come across as 'slow'.

Definitely worth the ticket price !!!
